THE SERIES: In 63 all-time meetings, the Bulldogs edge Wisconsin with an overall record of 27-26-10. UMD went 1-4 against the Badgers one season ago. After going winless for the first time in program history during the regular season last year, the Bulldogs won when it mattered most -- knocking then No. 1 Wisconsin out of the WCHA Final-Face-off on March 2 by a score of 3-1 at AMSOIL Arena. The Bulldogs scored a goal in each period, beginning with a tally by Audrey Cournoyer 8:10 into the first period, and never released the lead to hold Wisconsin off. Jenna McParland added a goal at 15:35 of the second period and Brigette Lacquette tagged the scoresheet with just 18 seconds remaining in the contest. Prior to UMD’s playoff win over Wisconsin, two of the Bulldogs four regular season losses were decided by one goal, including one overtime game in their last regular season skate on Jan. 21, a 4-3 setback for UMD. Twice last year the Bulldogs outshot the Badgers and lost -- on Jan. 20, a 2-0 slide despite a 36-23 shot advantage, and then back on Oct. 22, 2011, a 6-3 loss that displayed a UMD squad that outshelled UW 49-31. The Bulldogs are 13-10-5 all-time in Duluth against UW, but have won just a single game (March 3, 2012) against the Badgers in five skates in the confines of AMSOIL, going 1-3-1 since the new rink opened. LAST WEEK: UMD suffered just their second sweep of a season opener ever with two losses to Ohio State at AMSOIL last weekend. The series sweep was also the first ever at the hands of the Buckeyes. Saturday night’s slide (Oct. 5) was the first loss in a home-opener in program history, a 3-1 loss. Senior center Katie Wilson had the lone Bulldog goal in the skate -- a skate that featured four Bulldogs out of the line-up (Vanessa Thibault, Zoe Hickel, Tea Villila and Dana Gallop). The Bulldogs were saddled with their lowest shot output -- 17 -- since UMD was held to 14 against Wisconsin back on Dec. 4, 2009 . Sunday’s contest started off with it’s own historical moment when senior blueliner Jessica Wong became the 16th Bulldog to join the 100 point club

with a goal a mere 15 seconds into the skate. OSU scored two goals in the first period and the game remained a 2-1 deficit for UMD until Pernilla Winberg’s deflected shot equalized the game 3:10 into the final period. The Buckeyes benefited from their own deflection against the run of play that had been all UMD in the third period when a puck redirected off Minttu Tuominen’s skate and past Bulldog goaltender Kayla Black for the game-winner with 3:46 left in the game. Black had 18 saves in the setback and 40 in the series combined, while Wilson led all UMD scorers with a goal and two assists.

HEAD COACH SHANNON MILLER: No coach in NCAA women’s hockey history has had more success in the NCAA Frozen Four than UMD head coach Shannon Miller, now set to enter her 14th season behind the Bulldog bench in 2012-13 Miller has an NCAA-best eleven Frozen Four wins to accompany her NCAA-record five national titles. Her coaching portfolio also boasts an NCAA-high of 15 tournament wins. As the only head coach UMD has ever employed, Miller has amassed an impressive overall record of 334-103-35 and has led the Bulldogs to nine NCAA playoff appearances and five NCAA Championship titles, including three straight (2001, 2002 and 2003). She has led UMD into six NCAA Frozen Four berths, including two NCAA Championship in a three year span (2008 and 2010). No other hockey program in the country has won five titles, let alone three consecutive NCAA trophies. Aside from her record haul of NCAA titles, Miller reached her 250th career win faster than any other head coach in NCAA Division I history on Jan. 23, 2009. As the third winningest coach ever in Division I women’s hockey, Miller is just one of two NCAA Division I coaches ever to have collected 200 wins after just eight seasons behind the bench. Miller is also just the fourth head coach ever to win 250 games while remaining at just one NCAA Division I program.

Miller coached Canada to a silver medal at the 1998 Winter Olympics and stood out as the first and youngest female head coach of any Olympic hockey team. She also coached Canada to three consecutive gold medals at the Women’s World Ice Hockey Championships (1991, 1994 and 1997) and to gold medal finishes at both the 1995 and 1996 Pacific Rim Championships. She also struck gold in the Three Nations Cup Tournament with the Alberta Women’s Hockey Team (18 and under) in 1989 and two years later was part of a club which captured a gold medal in the first-ever hockey competition for women in the Canada Winter Games.

In June of 2011, Miller was named the coaching mentor for the Russian Senior National Team in preparation for the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia. During the program term (from July 1, 2011 till the end of January 2014), MIller will communicate every 2-3 weeks between the coach, mentors and ambassadors and the coaches of both the senior and under-18 national programs.

For her efforts, Miller was named the 2000 and 2003 Western Collegiate Hockey Association Coach of the Year and the 2003 American Hockey Coaches Association (AHCA) Women’s Division I Coach of the Year. In addition to the incredible NCAA runs, her Bulldogs have captured four WCHA regular season titles (2000, 2003, 2008, 2010) and five WCHA playoff titles (2000, 2001, 2003, 2008, 2010).
