2016 SEASON UMD women’s basketball fans should share plenty of excitement for the 2016-17 season, as head coach Mandy Pearson returns to the Bulldog bench for the second year along with a host of experienced players. UMD faced its fair share of adversity in the 2015-16 season, ending with a record of 7-19 overall and 7-15 in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference play. The Bulldogs entered the NSIC tournament as the seventh seed out of the North Division and fell to second-seeded University of Sioux Falls 66-50. Allyson Harris led UMD in scoring last season, putting out 13.0 points per game. UMD’s top five scorers will all contribute again in 2016-17 and the team will gladly welcome back senior Taylor Meyer, who sat out the 2015-16 season due to injury. The Bulldogs return all but one starter for the 2016-17 season and will look to use last year’s experience to jump to the upper half of the NSIC. WHO'S BACK? Senior forward Taylor Meyer returns for her final season looking to lead the Bulldogs in scoring for the second time. Once again, Meyer sat out the 2015-16 season after an offseason surgery, but was named the NSIC North Division Preseason Player of the Year prior to the season. Meyer averaged 17.5 points in 2014-15, while adding 8.7 rebounds per game. Senior center Allyson Harris will anchor the Bulldog attack following a breakout 2015-16 season. The Northfield, Minn. native started all 26 games while averaging 13 points and 5.3 rebounds per game. Harris and Meyer will look to lock down the paint as two of the more experienced players on the UMD squad. Senior forward Kenzie Kane is the third returning senior starter for the Bulldogs, coming off a season where she averaged 9.3 points per game. Kane will be a go-to scoring option for UMD and gives the Bulldogs a threat from the three-point line, where she led the team in three-pointers made last year. Sophomore Sammy Kozlowski and senior Jenna Orr return to provide depth to the Bulldog back-court.

@UMDBULLDOGS

Kozlowski started all 26 games at guard for UMD, averaging 9.2 points and 2.5 assists per game. Orr will likely provide a spark off the bench again this season, as she appeared in all but one game and averaged 2.5 points in 2015-16. Junior forwards Ayo Porte, Anna Monke, and Allison Olley return with valuable experience after playing in 23 or more games last season. Monke started 23 times and averaged 6.8 points and 4.1 rebounds per game. Olley, who is also a member of UMD’s volleyball team, provided a scoring and rebounding presence off the bench by averaging over five points and five rebounds per contest. Sophomore Emma Boehm and junior Amanda Hunt round out the returners. Boehm averaged 8.3 points per game last season while seeing action in 22 games. Hunt appeared in 11 games and notched seven points on the year. WHO'S NEW? Senior guard Jessie Mathews will provide an immediate impact after sitting out last season due to transfer rules. Mathews played at Saint Mary’s University before transferring to UMD in the second semester last year. Also looking to make a splash is freshman forward Jocelyn Buckley, who transferred from the University of North Dakota prior to the 2015-16 season. Buckley received a medical redshirt last year and will see her first collegiate action this season. Pearson and the Bulldogs will welcome five new freshmen to the team, including four from Minnesota or Wisconsin. Guard Taylor Schneider moves on from a high school career where she netted over 1,000 career points with Turtle Lake (Wis.) High School. Guard Alison Hinck adds to the Bulldog back-court after leading White Bear Lake High School in scoring the past three seasons. Hinck was named to the All-Minnesota State Tournament team in 2016, while also earning AllMetro East honors. Forwards Sami Schneider and Katie Stark join the squad after closing out stellar high school careers. Stark and Schneider will add depth to an already

deep UMD front-court. Center/forward Dominique Hart joins the Bulldogs from Hopkins High School. The California native led the Royals to a 29-3 season, ending with a loss to Minnetonka High School in the State Championship game. THE SCHEDULE UMD kicks off its season with its annual exhibition game against Bethel University on Nov. 3 at Romano Gym. The Bulldogs will host Michigan Tech University the following week before heading to the road for the remainder of the non-conference schedule: at Northern Michigan University and at Lake Superior State University on Nov. 22 and 23. The Bulldogs kick off their NSIC schedule with a road test against St. Cloud State University on Nov. 26 before returning to Romano Gymnasium for a pair of games against Bemidji State University and the University of Minnesota Crookston. UMD faces a couple road tests before hosting four straight games. The Bulldogs welcome St. Cloud State, the University of Mary, and Minot State University to end the month of December. Wisconsin-Superior will battle UMD on Jan. 3 at 11am, before the Bulldogs return to NSIC action. UMD will take to the road on Jan. 6 and 7 to take on Crookston and Bemidji State. The reigning NSIC champion Winona State University travels to Duluth on Jan. 13, with Upper Iowa University taking on the Bulldogs the following day. Looking to the end of the season, UMD will have a tough test as it plays four straight away games to start the month of February. The Bulldogs return to Romano Gym on Feb. 17 and 18 to wrap up their regular season against Northern State University and Minnesota State University Moorhead. The NSIC Tournament will begin on Feb. 22 and conclude the following week.

ROMANO GYMNASIUM For over half a century, the venerable Romano Gymnasium has been the home of University of Minnesota Duluth basketball. The UMD men have parlayed their home-court advantage into a .740 winning percentage and the Bulldog women have enjoyed even more success, winning at a .749 clip at the on-campus facility. Since the 1979-80 season, UMD has posted a sparkling 349-117 mark at home, winning at least 10 games on its own court in all but 15 seasons. The Bulldogs recorded 10 or more home victories in seven-straight seasons from 1984-85 through 1990-91 and set a school record with 15 home victories in 1988-89, a season during which UMD made its second straight national tournament appearance. In addition, the Bulldogs have turned in just two losing records at Romano Gymnasium in the last 30 seasons. The Bulldogs are also a perfect 20-0 all-time in postseason games at Romano Gymnasium, a record that included a 16-0 mark in NAIA District play in the late 1980s and early 1990s. Now a member of the NCAA and one of the nation’s premier circuits, the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference, UMD continues to bring the country’s top Division II teams to campus. Romano Gym can hold up to 2,759 spectators since undergoing an extensive $2 million face lift following the 1986-87 season. The facility was named in honor of the late Ralph Romano, UMD’s Director of Intercollegiate Athletics from 1969 to 1983.

Mandy Pearson Second-year head coach Mandy Pearson, following a 7-19 (7-15 NSIC) opening season, will look to continue to stamp her mark on the University of Minnesota Duluth women’s basketball program. Pearson brings in five freshmen and a pair of eligible transfers to contribute to the 2016-17 squad. The Bulldogs showed a physical presence last season, out-blocking their opponents 109-68 and grabbing over 37 rebounds per game. Pearson and the Bulldogs will look to build on last year’s success to jump up the NSIC standings. Pearson proved her ability to turn a program around while leading the NCAA Division III Saint Mary’s University since the 2007 season, providing stability to a program that posted a 7-18 record during the 2006-07 season and had three coaches in as many seasons. Saint Mary’s quickly moved up the ranks in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) under her guidance, securing a playoff bid during the 2011-12 campaign, its first since 2005. A year later, the Cardinals posted a 22-5 record, second-best in program history, earned a victory over UMD’s Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference rival Winona State University, and advanced to the MIAC Tournament semifinals. Pearson was named the MIAC Coach of the Year for the first time in 2012-13, repeating that feat a year later, and also earned the SMU Staff Recognition Award following that season. Her last two years with the Cardinals, Pearson’s squads posted a 42-13 combined record including a 24-4 mark-best in program history--in 2013-14. The team found itself ranked in the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association/ USA Today Sports NCAA III Top 25 Coaches’ Poll and d3hoops.com polls for the first time ever, as high as no. 12 in 2013-14 and in the top-25 from d3hoops.com in 201415. In her nine seasons as the SMU bench boss, Pearson produced one d3hoops.com All-American selection in Courtney Euerle (an honorable mention in 2013-14), who

@UMDBULLDOGS

HEAD COACH, SECOND SEASON also earned MIAC Player of the Year honors and was the only player from the entire conference to earn All-America recognition that season. Pearson also produced two AllNCAA III West Region Team members, nine All-MIAC award selections, seven all-conference honorable mentions, four All-MIAC Defensive Team selections, and four MIAC All-First Year Team picks. Before joining Saint Mary’s, Pearson served as an assistant with NCAA Division III Hamline University during the 200507 seasons after wrapping up a four-year playing career at another MIAC school, Concordia College of Moorhead. Pearson earned three All-MIAC selections during her playing career and was named a First Team All-American during her senior season in 2004-05. She was the first Cobber to achieve 1,000 points and 500 assists in her career. She also played softball for Concordia-Moorhead, earning All-MIAC citation on the diamond as well in her senior campaign. Pearson earned a Bachelor of Arts in psychology from Concordia with minors in sociology, health and coaching. While coaching at Saint Mary’s, she earned her Master of Arts degree in human development in 2013. Over the last five years, Pearson has spoken at several camps and clinics, including the Minnesota State High School League Association Clinic in 2011. She also polished her own coaching acumen at the Nike Championship Basketball Clinic, the University of Wisconsin Green Bay, Northern State University, and Final Four Coaching Clinics.

coaches & support staff Jenna Freudenberg ASSISTANT COACH, SECOND SEASON Associate head coach Jenna Freudenberg will return to the Bulldog coaching staff for her second season in 2016-17. Freudenberg joined UMD in 2015-16 after a six-year stint with Saint Mary’s University. She began coaching with Pearson in 2009-10 and quickly ascended to the title of lead assistant and, during 2014-15, associate head coach. “I am extremely excited that Jenna has decided to become a part of the Bulldog family,” said Pearson. “She is a phenomenal person to work with and will bring a great deal of energy and knowledge to our women’s basketball program.” Freudenberg, who shares an alma mater with Pearson having played her collegiate basketball at Concordia College of Moorhead, also obtained her Master’s of Arts in human development from Saint Mary’s in 2013. As an athlete, she earned Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) MVP honors, Women’s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) All-American Honorable Mention, and participated in a pair of NCAA tournaments while with the Cobbers. “Jenna is one of the hardest workers I have been around

and is very excited to be a part of our community. The young women in our program will gravitate towards her leadership as she will spend a great deal of time helping them to improve on and off the basketball court in any way that she can! I couldn’t be happier about the announcement of Jenna becoming a part of the UMD coaching staff,” added Pearson. Freudenberg also comes with a strong academic profile as an eight-semester Dean’s List selection at Concordia-Moorhead, three-time Academic All-MIAC selections, and ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District 5 Team. While with Pearson at Saint Mary’s, Freudenberg was responsible for video analysis, scouting reports, practice plans, the defensive game, as well as strength and conditioning workouts. At SMU, she served as the team’s recruiting coordinator resulting in six All-MIAC selections, an All-MIAC MVP, and one d3hoops.com All-West Region performer. She also set up the team’s camps, helped assemble fundraising opportunities, and aided in organizing volunteer activities for the team. She also worked as Saint Mary’s director of intramural athletics from 2009-15 after spending a year as the assistant director. In the past, Freudenberg attended the MIAC Female Women’s Administrator Mentor Program as well as the Minnesota State High School League, Nike Championship, University of Wisconsin-Green Bay, Northern State University, and Lasallian Coaches’ clinics.

natalie williams

GRADUATE ASSISTANT COACH, SECOND SEASON A former player and student manager for head coach Mandy Pearson at Saint Mary’s University, Natalie Williams joined the Bulldog bench in 2015-16 as a graduate assistant. Williams is a Chicago native and De La Salle High School graduate and played for Pearson during the 2014-15 campaign, appearing in nine games for the Cardinals. She graduated from SMU in May 2015 with a degree in sports management and is now pursuing a master’s degree at UMD. “I am so excited for Natalie to join our coaching staff here at UMD,” said Pearson. “As both a manager and a player for me when I coached at Saint Mary’s, she was a huge part of our program, and we are very lucky to have her join our Bulldog family. “
