For over half a century, the venerable Romano Gymnasium has been the home of University of Minnesota Duluth basketball. The UMD men have parlayed their home-court advantage into a .751 winning percentage and the Bulldog women have enjoyed even more success, winning at a .772 clip at the on-campus facility. Since the 1979-80 season, UMD has posted a sparkling 321-95 mark at home, winning at least 10 games on its own court in all but 12 seasons. The Bulldogs recorded 10 or more home victories in seven straight seasons from 198485 through 1990-91 and set a school record with 15 home victories in 1988-89, a season during which UMD made its second straight national tournament appearance. In addition, the Bulldogs have turned in just one losing record at Romano Gymnasium in the last 29 seasons. The Bulldogs are also a perfect 20-0 all-time in postseason games at Romano Gymnasium, a record that included a 16-0 mark in NAIA District play in the late 1980s and early 1990s. Now a member of the NCAA and one of the nation's premier circuits, the North Sun Intercollegiate Conference, UMD continues to bring the country's top Division II teams to campus. Romano Gym can hold up to 2,759 spectators since undergoing an extensive $2 million face lift following the 1986-87 season. The facility was named in honor of the late Ralph Romano, UMD's Director of Intercollegiate Athletics from 1969 to 1983.

The Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Founded in 1932, what is now known as the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference has enjoyed a varied but successful existence in the Upper Midwest region it calls home. In the spring of 1992, the NSIC was formed by merging the Northern Intercollegiate Conference (men), and the women’s Northern Sun Conference, which had existed since 1979. The NSIC is currently made up of institutions from Iowa, Minnesota, Nebraska, North Dakota and South Dakota. During the 2008-09 season, the NSIC expanded to a 14-team league with the addition of Augustana College, the University of Minnesota Duluth, Minnesota State University-Mankato and St. Cloud State University. Minot State University and the University of Sioux Falls will compete as members of the NSIC for the first time in 2012, bringing the conference to a total of 16 teams. Since the league’s inception, various institutions have competed in the NSIC. Bemidji State University, Minnesota State University-Moorhead and Winona State University are charter members and have remained in the conference for its entire 80year history. Minnesota State University, Mankato and St. Cloud State were also charter members, but left the league in 1981 (MSU departed 1969 only to return eight years later). UMD, which left and rejoined the league on two occasions, was also an original member. Other current league participants joined in later years: Southwest Minnesota State University in 1969, Northern State University in 1978, Wayne State College (Neb.) in 1998, Concordia University-St. Paul and the University of Minnesota-Crookston in 1999, and the University of Mary and Upper Iowa University in 2006. Head Coach Annette Wiles Annette Wiles returns for her fifth season as the Bulldogs’ head coach, having already made significant strides in her first four seasons. After bringing stability to a program that had sorely lacked any kind of continuity in the years immediately prior to her arrival, Wiles -- in her 20th season as a collegiate head coach -- has a roster fully recruited by her staff at her disposal for the first time since taking the helm in the fall of 2008. During her first season as head coach of the Bulldogs, Wiles orchestrated the fourth-biggest turnaround of any program in NCAA Division II in 2008-09, as UMD finished 16-12 after going 4-23 the previous winter. The following year, Wiles led the Bulldogs to an overall record of 20-11 and UMD's ninth appearance in the NCAA II Tournament. This past season, Wiles and the Bulldogs returned to the NCAA tournament for the second time in three years behind an overall record of 18-10, including a 15-7 record against NSIC competition. Before to her first season at UMD, Wiles ser ved as the head coach at her alma mater, Fort Hays State University (Kansas) for eight seasons after coaching Bethany College (Kansas) the previous seven. With 555 collegiate games under her belt through 19 full seasons, Wiles has compiled an overall record of 369-186, good for a .665 winning percentage. In eight seasons at Fort Hays State, Wiles guided the

Tigers - who competed in both the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletic Association and the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference during her tenure - to a record of 136-92. Wiles led Fort Hays State to its first-ever NCAA II tournament appearance in 2004-05, and helped produce 15 all-conference selections as well as three Academic All-Americans. While in charge of the women’s basketball program at Bethany College, Wiles put together a career record of 164-49. She led the Swedes to the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics National Tournament on four occasions, advancing as far as the final eight in 1995. Wiles finished with 20-plus wins in each of her seven seasons patrolling the Bethany sidelines, and was named the Kansas Women’s Basketball Coach of the Year in 1995 and 1999. She also coached 25 Academic All-Americans at Bethany and her 1998 club’s 3.71 cumulative grade point average was the highest of any NAIA squad. Wiles launched her coaching career an assistant on staff at Fort Hays State for two seasons (1991-93) following the conclusion of her playing career. Born in Hunter, Kan., Wiles starred for four seasons at Fort Hays State and helped lead her team to a NAIA national championship as a senior in 1990-91. A two-time NAIA All-American and member of both the Tiger Sports (class of 2000) and RMAC (2003) Halls of Fame, Wiles graduated as Fort Hays State’s leader in career points (2,407) and rebounds (961). Her outstanding collegiate playing career was recognized when she was one of 12 players selected to the RMAC All-Time Women’s Basketball Team. A resident of Duluth, Wiles received a Bachelor of Science degree in physical education from Fort Hays State in 1991, and earned a Master of Science in physical education with an emphasis in athletic administration two years later from that same institution.

Coaches and Staff Jess Abrahams, Assistant Coach Jess Abrahams returns for her fifth season on the Bulldog bench an assistant under head coach Annette Wiles. Prior to her arrival at UMD, Abrahams spent four years as an assistant coach at Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference rival Minnesota State University-Mankato. Abrahams, 31, was elevated to a full-time assistant coaching position in 2007-08 when the Mavericks posted a 23-9 overall record and advanced to the NCAA Division II North Central Regional Championship. She spent the previous three seasons at MSU-Mankato as a graduate assistant. A native of Detroit Lakes, Minn., Abrahams played four seasons at St. Cloud State University and received AllNorth Central Conference honorable mention acclaim during her sophomore and junior seasons. She started in the Huskies’ backcourt for three years, finishing her career with 1,060 points. She was a team captain for St. Cloud State as a senior in 2003-04. Abrahams, who was a medical redshirt with the 2002-03 Huskies, currently ranks fifth on the club’s all-time list for three-point field goals made, with 124 in 114 games. Abrahams graduated from St. Cloud State in 2005 with B.S. degrees in physical education and health education and earned a Master’s degree in physical education from MSU-Mankato two years later. She was inducted into the Detroit Lakes High School Hall of Honor for her accomplishments as a prep athlete during the school’s 2012 Homecoming football game.

Ella Olson, Graduate Assistant Coach No stranger to the Bulldog basketball team, Ella Olson enters her second season on head coach Annette Wiles’ staff as a graduate assistant coach. A native of Roberts, Wis., and a 2006 graduate of St. Croix Central High School, Olson wrapped up her four-year playing career at UMD as one of the Bulldogs’ five senior captains in 2010-11. Olson checked into 26 of UMD’s 27 engagements in her senior year, averaging over six minutes per outing. Her career accolades include qualifying for the North Central Conference Commissioner’s Academic Honor Roll before the conference disbanded at the conclusion of the 2007-08 school year, earning three straight NSIC All-Academic Team selections and making an appearance in the NCAA II Tournament with the Bulldogs as a junior. Olson completed her undergraduate studies at UMD in the spring of 2011, earning a Bachelor of Arts in Elementary Education. She is currently pursuing a Master’s in Education at UMD.
