THE OSHER LIFELONG LEARNING INSTITUTE (OLLI) The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at the University of Miami was founded in 1984. Previously known as the Institute for Retired Professionals, the name was changed upon the awarding of a grant from the Osher Foundation. A department of the Division of Continuing and International Education, the Institute welcomes all members of the community who are 50 years old or better and who consider learning an integral part of life. Membership is open to all those who wish to continue their pursuit of learning, new ideas, and social and cultural opportunities. The Institute’s programs are designed to accommodate a relaxed learning style and make it easy for anyone who may have been away from the formal learning environment for many years. Classes included in this schedule are offered with no tests and in most cases, no homework. Classes are designed to spark your curiosity and to encourage your participation. Our member students include men and women whose backgrounds are varied, and may include the legal and medical professions, teachers, homemakers and volunteers as well as social workers and business owners. In other words, our members are everyday people who are interested in keeping their minds active and engaged. Participation and Commitment OLLI is a cooperative organization dedicated to those aged 50 and over seeking intellectual enrichment. SPRING SESSION I SCHEDULE

Special Interest Groups (SIGs) are classes/meetings organized and operated by OLLI students. They are created to bring together students who share a particular interest. Do you know students who share a common interest with you - photography? board games? science fiction? reading The New Yorker? Our existing SIGs are listed in this catalogue and are marked SIG. • A coordinator and/or co-coordinator (OLLI students) is responsible for the group’s organization, operations and activities. • OLLI staff members are available for scheduling rooms and general guidance If you have an idea for a SIG that you would like to organize, please talk to OLLI staff. Participation in a SIG is one of the benefits of membership! 2

PARKING All vehicles on campus are required to display a UM parking permit from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm from Monday through Friday. OLLI members may purchase a 2012/2013 permit from the Parking Department. The annual cost is $148 and permits expire on August 15th, 2013. This permit allows you to park in the lots around Founders Hall and any other nearby lots whose signs specify that Gray Zone permit holders may park. Parking permits may be purchased from the Parking Department during OLLI registration week in the OLLI office. You will be required to show your OLLI membership card and valid vehicle registration when you purchase a permit. The Parking Department is open from 8:30 am to 5:00 pm on weekdays. GUEST POLICY Bringing guests to class is a great way to introduce OLLI to a potential student and you are encouraged to do so. However, you must clear the visit with the office at least 48 hours before arriving with the guest to ensure that there is space available in the class. Potential members are limited to two complimentary visits where there is space available. Children under the age of 15 are not permitted to attend. AUDITING PROCEDURES Many of our UM university professors welcome OLLI students in their classrooms. If you are just starting out with OLLI, you may want to audit only one course. However, you may be ready to audit multiple courses in one semester. Whether it is one course or four courses, auditing is a great benefit of OLLI membership. An auditor is a person who enrolls as an observer or listener only. The professor will indicate if s/he wants to include you in the classroom interaction. Auditing is permitted in most credit lecture courses only when there is space available in the class and OLLI has received written permission from the instructor and clearance from the OLLI Director. Auditing is not permitted in laboratory, creative writing, or performance courses (where audit status is not appropriate). Auditing is not permitted in Law or Medical School classes. All requests to audit must come through the OLLI office and be approved by the Director of OLLI. Send your auditing request to osher@miami.edu. You will be notified when you have received permission from the instructor and OLLI to audit the classes you requested.

Auditing for OLLI members is a privilege granted to us by the University of Miami. Abuse of this privilege by any person can jeopardize the benefit for all OLLI students. There is a flat fee for auditing each semester you decide to audit a course. CANCELLATION AND REFUND POLICY - If a class is cancelled, we will notify you using your supplied contact information. - If a course is cancelled due to insufficient enrollment, the entire course fee will be refunded. - The OLLI membership fee is non-refundable. - If you cancel course registration 3 days prior to the first class meeting, you will receive a full refund on the class fee. - If you cancel within 3 days (72 hours) prior to the start date of class, a 75% refund will be issued to you. - If you cancel on or after the first day of class, you will not receive a refund. - All cancellations must be submitted in writing, either via email or letter. - Fees cannot be transferred or pro-rated. OLLI operates only when the University of Miami is open. If the University is closed due to inclement weather or any other emergency situation, we will close as well. Growing old presents change and challenges, but it also offers the enormous potential for happiness. The process of personal reflection and group dialogues will guide participants to envision, plan and grow a purposeful life. Week 1: Introduction of “Circles of Reflective Dialogues” (CORD) and course goals. Introduction of Dr. Gene D. Cohen’s research and the four phases of older life: reevaluation, liberation, summing up, and encore. Week 2: In the reevaluation phase, plans and actions are shaped by a sense quest, which can lead to a powerful desire to find meaning in life or redirect life in a new direction. Week 3: A new sense of liberation and personal freedom is represented by “if not now, when?” as presented in Dr. Cohen’s second phase of late life.

Week 5: The encore phase contains aspects of the three previous phases represented by the desires for love, companionship, self-determination, control and giving back. Miriam Moussatche-Wechsler, LCSW, LMHC brings more than 20 years of experience in psychotherapy and psychoeducation, lately focusing in working with men and women 50+. Miriam is a frequent lecturer on the subject of transitions for clients 50+, most recently presenting at the annual symposium of the International Association for the Advancement of Social Work with Groups, and the annual meeting of the Latin American Jewish Studies Association. 6

How many times have you heard: “We are a nation of immigrants”? Even those we call Native Americans immigrated from Asia, marching on foot over a land bridge through the Bering Straits, leaving their homelands for a new world that they eventually made their own. Multitudes of new migrations followed, and, today, America is a hodge-podge of cultures and ethnic groups where the search for wholeness and the struggle for acculturation is part of each day’s drama. In this course, our inquiry begins with learning about the history of immigration to the United States. With that as a background, we launch into reading about a variety of immigrant experiences. We will examine the historical and political circumstances that spurred the abandonment of countries of birth and the harsh realities that met the newcomers in a foreign land. We will discuss how the collision between old and new traditions shapes us and question the issues of nationalism, gender, economic class, religion and language. We will look at America itself: what it means to the world and what it will continue to mean in the future. Workshop participants will come to class prepared to discuss not only the literary merits of the narrative (language style, plot, structure, setting, character development, themes) assigned for that week, but also the historical and political issues tackled therein. In this class, we will develop seven skill areas to form the basis of a public speaking presence. During each of the first six classes, each student will give a 3-4 minute presentation or talk. Each session is a balance of new instruction, skill exercises, presentation/speech delivery, and critique from the instructor. Painting is to be enjoyed, not endured. Acrylics are easy to use mainly because they are water soluble, and are not encumbered by numerous technical rules, as are oils. Acrylics allow the artist to jump in and push the medium to its limits. Come and experience the fun, ease and lack of boundaries this medium and class offers. There will be time in class to work on your projects where you will receive assistance and weekly critiques. For a list of suggested supplies, please contact the OLLI office. You will be painting in the first class. Note: This class is geared toward those who are new to the medium, as well as artists of different levels who have not painted for a while. Jim Brennan is a native Floridian. He graduated with a BA in Humanities fromFlorida Atlantic University, where his focus was on art and architecture. Jim is a teacher and an award-winning artist in acrylics, watercolor, metal sculpture and wire sculpture mediums. His work has been featured throughout Miami, Palm Beach, Winter Park and Tampa.

Dr. Rita Botwinick is Fellow at the University of Miami Miller Center for Judaic Studies. She holds a PhD in Modern German History from St. Johns University. Dr. Botwinick was born in Germany, but fled Nazi Germany with her family during World War II.

Manny Garcia-Rossi, MA, attended the University of Florence and graduated from Florida State University in 2002 in Italian and Literary Theory. He received a second MA in Film studies at the University of Miami in 2006. He has taught at Florida State University and designed the curriculum used for the Italian program at the InterAmerican campus of Miami Dade College, focusing on communicative proficiency. Manny is a Senior Lecturer, and founder of the UM Italian Film Series, for the Department of Modern Languages and Literatures at the University of Miami, where he has taught since 2003. 10

Learn how to catch and record close-ups of animals, plants and panoramic subtropical landscapes. This 6-week course combines one classroom session with five outdoor photo safaris, followed by thoughtful critiques outdoors after the shoots. Topics include aperture, shutter speed, and ISO settings. PowerPoint and digital image presentations will serve as demos. A digital camera with a zoom lens is recommended. Field trips include Crandon Park on Key Biscayne, Miami Zoo, Pinecrest Gardens, Everglades National Park, and the UM campus. Karl Koslowski received his BS from Philadelphia University of the Arts. He currently teaches digital photography at Florida International University, University of Miami and Miami Dade College. Koslowski was a member of the US & Foreign Service. He designed and supervised the installation of major USA Pavilions in 30 countries throughout the world.

Week 1: Trans-Humanism In this overview, we will look at the idea that the human body and mind are at a very early stage of their development and can - with the help of technology overcome their physiological limitations. Troublesome ethical questions arise in the wake of each new development.

Week 3: Designing the Perfect Human It started with the discovery of the double helix and within half a century the entire human genome had been described, setting the stage for designing the human body and, perhaps, the mind, and raising the question: “Who are we after all?” Week 4: The Non-Human Human Thankfully, robots are on their way toward taking over a lot of human tasks. However, given the progress in making robots “human-like” with language, ideas of their own, and even emotions, are we creating robots that will replace humans on this planet? The answer will scare many.

Week 2: The IT Future Shock In the IT world, everything gets smaller, faster, has more capacity, and gets cheaper, too. Looking back on 50 years of technological progress, the speaker will offer projections of a world that is totally incomprehensible today and raises the question of how we will adapt to such changes.

Humanity is facing daunting challenges in the next few decades as a result of accelerating developments in four key technologies/fields: IT, Genetics, Robotics, and Neuroscience. We will be tested individually and our social fabric will be strained, but should we stop these developments…if we even can? This series focuses on a very brave new world called The Singularity.

Week 5: Cafeteria Plan Brains With new understanding of the actual functioning of the brain and with technologies like those discussed in the previous three lectures, we are on the brink of re-making our brains to our own specifications - like choosing the food in a cafeteria. Will we like our new selves? Torben Riise, PhD, MBA, and a native of Denmark, has held executive positions in large international biotech companies for two decades. He owns his own consulting business. Torben specializes in ethics and corporate/social issues. 12

This course will be a discussion of the fiction and poetry of American Appalachian writer Rob Rash. Rash has published three collections of poetry, three short story collections, and four novels, all to wide critical acclaim and several awards and honors. During this session, we will read The Cove, Rash’s 2012 novel, as well as Nothing Gold Can Stay, a collection of short stories published in February 2013. In addition, we will discuss a few of Rash’s poems each week.

Not only have various religions shaped everyday ritual practices and life cycle observances, they have left their mark on East Asian art and architecture as well as influencing their history and politics. As the Abrahamic religions of the Middle East – Christianity, Islam, and Judaism – made their way across the Silk Road, and Buddhism spread from South Asia to the north and east, religious traditions and customs adapted themselves to new cultural contexts. Even today, the politics and cultures of the countries of East Asia continue to shape, and be shaped by, their distinctive religious legacies. We will discuss some of the artists who began the new humanist movement in which man is viewed as the center of the universe. Week 2: The early life of Leonardo Da Vinci. OSH 510-44 Nature and Animal Digital Photography Thursdays | 10:00am – 1:00pm | OLLI North Bay Village | March 21, 28, April 4, 11, 18, 25 Six Sessions $100 Learn how to catch and record close-ups of animals, plants and panoramic subtropical landscapes. This 6-week course combines one classroom session with five outdoor photo safaris, followed by thoughtful critiques outdoors after the shoots. Topics include aperture, shutter speed, and ISO settings. PowerPoint and digital image presentations will serve as demos. A digital camera with a zoom lens is recommended. Field trips include Crandon Park on Key Biscayne, Miami Zoo, Pinecrest Gardens, Everglades National Park, and the UM campus. Karl Koslowski received his BS from Philadelphia University of the Arts. He currently teaches digital photography at Florida International University, University of Miami and Miami Dade College. Koslowski was a member of the US & Foreign Service. He designed and supervised the installation of major USA Pavilions in 30 countries throughout the world.
