THE OSHER LIFELONG LEARNING INSTITUTE (OLLI) The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at the University of Miami was founded in 1984. Previously known as the Institute for Retired Professionals, the name was changed upon the awarding of a grant from the Osher Foundation. A department of the Division of Continuing and International Education, the Institute welcomes all members of the community who are 50 years old or better and who consider learning an integral part of life. Membership is open to all those who wish to continue their pursuit of learning, new ideas, and social and cultural opportunities. The Institute’s programs are designed to accommodate a relaxed learning style and make it easy for anyone who may have been away from the formal learning environment for many years. Classes included in this schedule are offered with no tests and in most cases, no homework. Classes are designed to spark your curiosity and to encourage your participation. Classes are structured to fit a flexible schedule. Our member students include men and women whose backgrounds are varied, and may include the legal and medical professions, teachers, homemakers and volunteers as well as social workers and business owners. In other words, our members are everyday people who are interested in keeping their minds active and engaged. Participation and Commitment OLLI is a cooperative organization dedicated to those aged 50 and over seeking intellectual enrichment. Students are encouraged to make a commitment to the program and its ongoing development. Location

Special Interest Groups (SIGs) are classes/meetings organized and operated by OLLI students. They are created to bring together students who share a particular interest. Do you know students who share a common interest with you - photography? board games? science fiction? reading The New Yorker? Our existing SIGs are listed in this catalogue and are marked SIG. • A coordinator and/or co-coordinator (OLLI students) is responsible for the group’s organization, operations and activities. • OLLI staff members are available for scheduling rooms and general guidance If you have an idea for a SIG that you would like to organize, please talk to OLLI staff. Participation in a SIG is one of the benefits of membership! 2

PARKING All vehicles on campus are required to display a UM parking permit from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm from Monday through Friday. OLLI members may purchase a 2012/2013 permit from the Parking Department. The annual cost is $148 and permits expire on August 15th, 2013. This permit allows you to park in the lots around Founders Hall and any other nearby lots whose signs specify that Gray Zone permit holders may park. Parking permits may be purchased from the Parking Department during OLLI registration week in the OLLI office. You will be required to show your OLLI membership card and valid vehicle registration when you purchase a permit. The Parking Department is open from 8:30 am to 5:00 pm on weekdays. Bringing guests to class is a great way to introduce OLLI to a potential student and you are encouraged to do so. However, you must clear the visit with the office at least 48 hours before arriving with the guest to ensure that there is space available in the class. Potential members are limited to two complimentary visits where there is space available. Children under the age of 15 are not permitted to attend. AUDITING PROCEDURES Many of our UM university professors welcome OLLI students in their classrooms. If you are just starting out with OLLI, you may want to audit only one course. However, you may be ready to audit multiple courses in one semester. Whether it is one course or four courses, auditing is a great benefit of OLLI membership. An auditor is a person who enrolls as an observer or listener only. The professor will indicate if s/he wants to include you in the classroom interaction. Auditing is permitted in most credit lecture courses only when there is space available in the class and OLLI has received written permission from the instructor and clearance from the OLLI Director. Auditing is not permitted in laboratory, creative writing, or performance courses (where audit status is not appropriate). Auditing is not permitted in Law or Medical School classes. All requests to audit must come through the OLLI office and be approved by the Director of OLLI. Complete the audit request form available on our website: continue.miami.edu/osher. You will be notified when you have received permission from the instructor and OLLI to audit the classes you requested. Auditing for OLLI members is a privilege granted to us by the University of Miami. Abuse of this privilege by any person can jeopardize the benefit for all OLLI students. There is a flat fee for auditing each semester you decide to audit a course.

CANCELLATION AND REFUND POLICY - If a class is cancelled, we will notify you using your supplied contact information. - If a course is cancelled due to insufficient enrollment, the entire course fee will be refunded. - The OLLI membership fee is non-refundable. - If you cancel course registration 3 days prior to the first class meeting, you will receive a full refund on the class fee. - If you cancel within 3 days (72 hours) prior to the start date of class, a 75% refund will be issued to you. - If you cancel on or after the first day of class, you will not receive a refund. - All cancellations must be submitted in writing, either via email or letter. - Fees cannot be transferred or pro-rated. OLLI operates only when the University of Miami is open. If the University is closed due to inclement weather or any other emergency situation, we will close as well. As such, it exercised a magnetic attraction upon several generations of artists and intellectuals, large numbers of whom migrated to the French capital from all over the world. Continued.... 6

Painting is to be enjoyed, not endured. Acrylics are easy to use mainly because they are water soluble, and are not encumbered by numerous technical rules, as are oils. Acrylics allow the artist to jump in and push the medium to its limits. Come and experience the fun, ease and lack of boundaries this medium and class offers. There will be time in class to work on your projects where you will receive assistance and weekly critiques. For a list of suggested supplies, please contact the OLLI office. You will be painting in the first class. Note: This class is geared toward those who are new to the medium, as well as artists of different levels who have not painted for a while. ¡Bienvenidos! In this intermediate course you will continue learning the basic essentials of speaking and writing in Spanish. Vocabulary, main grammar points and cultural elements will all be presented in a relaxed and fun atmosphere. Come and join in on the fun. ¡Te esperamos! Manny Garcia-Rossi, MA, attended the University of Florence and graduated from Florida State University in 2002 in Italian and Literary Theory. He received a second MA in Film studies at the University of Miami in 2006. He has taught at Florida State University and designed the curriculum used for the Italian program at the InterAmerican campus of Miami Dade College, focusing on communicative proficiency. Manny is a Senior Lecturer, and founder of the UM Italian Film Series, for the Department of Modern Languages and Literatures at the University of Miami, where he has taught since 2003. 8

This class is designed for those students who have been working with the medium for at least one year. You will be given ample time in class to work on your projects, where you will receive assistance and critiques each week. David Maddern, MA, a musician and visual artist who transfers the elements of music to his paintings, has worked on many collections both in the United States and abroad. He has been teaching at OLLI since 2001 and also teaches at Fairchild Tropical Gardens.

Photography around town: south florida landmarks Tuesdays | 10:00 am – 1:00 pm | Computer Room & five outdoor photo shoots May 21, 28, June 4, 11, 18, 25 Six Sessions $90 This is a Digital Photography course with a historic emphasis. We will capture significant South Florida landmarks through the eyes of a digital camera in this 18-hour course. First session meets at OLLI in Coral Gables, the rest of our sessions will be at local landmarks from the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts, Freedom Tower, AA Arena, Julia Tuttle Bronze Statue in Bayfront Park, Miami Circle, Brickell Park, Deering Estate, to Key Biscayne lighthouse. A digital reflex camera with an 18-55 mm or longer zoom lens is recommended. Note: This 6-week course starts with one classroom instruction and continues with five outdoor photo shoots, followed by thoughtful critiques outdoors. Karl Koslowski received his B.S. from Philadelphia University of the Arts. He currently teaches digital photography at Florida International University, University of Miami and Miami Dade College. Koslowski was a member of the US & Foreign Services. He designed and supervised the installation of major USA Pavilions in 30 countries throughout the world.

Each week’s lecture is devoted to presenting you with an in-depth vocabulary for how to describe the inner-workings of our most multifarious of visual media.

Michael is a Professor in the Department of Modern Languages & Literatures at the University of Miami.

For this course, we will read the new novel And the Mountains Echoed by best-selling author Khaled Hosseini. In the first week, we will discuss his debut novel The Kite Runner. On June 19, we will take a group field trip to attend a reading by Hosseini at 7:30 PM.

The purpose of this interactive intermediate Spanish conversation course is to begin honing your speaking skills and develop the ability to discuss personal activities, everyday situations and to express your opinions – ¡En Español! You see, we all have hidden quirks and talents – and sometimes the funniest people are actually the shy ones, the awkward ones, the ones who have no idea in the world how to tell a joke! This course is designed as a basic introduction to the techniques of improvisational comedy – a style of “structured spontaneity” used by professional actors and comedians everywhere and featured on well-known game shows like Whose Line is it Anyway? Each session will be spent in an interactive, workshop-style atmosphere. No previous acting or comedy training is required. Blogger is a web-based application to build blogs. Blogger offers many fascinating, yet easy to use templates and tools to create unique and eye-catching blogs. This course requires basic computer skills and the disposition to publish material online. In addition, by the end of the session students will have a broader understanding of social media trends such as Facebook and Twitter. Note: There are many blog developing applications such as WordPress. In addition, there are numerous web albums such as Picasa. Week 1: What is a Blog? A brief history of blogs. Touring some weblogs. Week 2: What is Blogger.com? Account/blog creation. Touring the dashboard. Creating additional blogs. Deleting a blog. Week 3: Configuring basic and formatting settings. Mariely Valentin-Llopis holds her MS in Mass Communications from FIU and her BA in Communications from the University of Puerto Rico. As an adjunct faculty member of UM’s School of Communication, Mariely taught theory and hands-on workshops in graphic design, Adobe Photoshop, InDesign and other software programs. She currently teaches at Barry University in Miami.

Jim Brennan is a native Floridian. He graduated with a BA in Humanities from Florida Atlantic University, where his focus was on art and architecture. Jim is a teacher and an award-winning artist in acrylics, watercolor, metal sculpture and wire sculpture mediums. His work has been featured throughout Miami, Palm Beach, Winter Park and Tampa.

Week 1: Oddities of the Civil War: Many strange and unbelievable things took place during the American Civil War, most references found only in the most obscure resources. Here are many of the strange stories, anecdotes, and bizarre facts that you don’t read about in mainstream historic texts. Week 2: The History of Flight: From Icarus to the first human footstep on the moon, this lecture tells the story of man’s efforts (most often unsuccessful) to soar into the sky like birds. We will concentrate, primarily on the efforts of da Vinci, and the Wright Brothers, but were many others along the way, whose efforts we will share. Week 3: Phantom Ships & Stories of the Sea: Gathered from years of related seafaring research and the World’s rich legacy of sea stories, here are Mr. Dawson’s favorites. Week 4: This Strange World: The bizarre and curious behavior of the living creatures with whom we share this wonderful and diverse world. Week 5: HMS Bounty: A tribute to a ship and her history. Robert Dawson served aboard this historic vessel for over 8 years. The 50-year-old ship was recently lost in Hurricane Sandy. This is Mr. Dawson’s tribute to her history and legacy. Week 6: The Swashbuckler in Film: For many years Robert Dawson led a troupe of 35 stage fight coordinators call The Ring of Steel. He trained countless actors and enthusiasts to handle swords without killing each other. Their inspiration was the legacy of film and stage swordsmen of the ages. Here is a retrospect of all the great cinematic heroes who handled a blade. Robert Dawson is an actor/historian and has been a science lecturer for the Museum of Science for the past 14 years. He has created over 40 one-man historical presentations for festivals, museums and educational institutions.
