Have You Seen This Wizarding Tournament?
N NOVEMBER 2016, University Archivist Anne Turkos and Athletics Archivist Amanda Hawk visited legendary former UMD men’s basketball coach Charles “Lefty” Driesell at his home in Virginia Beach. In his home office surrounded by awards, plaques, and team photos, Driesell shared his memories of Maryland basketball and generously donated 72 videotapes and 65 film reels spanning from 1969 to 1986. Many of the film reels document the 1973-74 men’s basketball season and include a Maryland vs. N.C. State match-up at the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) championship largely considered one of the best basketball games of all time. Videotapes collected from Driesell include footage of All-American Len Bias as well as Maryland’s upset of No. 1 North Carolina in the Dean E. (continues on page 7)
