Saving UMD’s Basketball History

Have You Seen This Wizarding Tournament?

N NOVEMBER 2016, University Archivist Anne Turkos and Athletics Archivist Amanda Hawk visited legendary former UMD men’s basketball coach Charles “Lefty” Driesell at his home in ­Virginia Beach. In his home office surrounded by awards, plaques, and team photos, Driesell shared his memories of Maryland basketball and generously donated 72 videotapes and 65 film reels spanning from 1969 to 1986.

Many of the film reels document the 1973-74 men’s basketball season and include a Maryland vs.

N.C. State match-up at the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) championship largely considered one of the best basketball games of all time. Videotapes collected from Driesell include footage of All-American Len Bias as well as Maryland’s upset of No. 1 North Carolina in the Dean E. (continues on page 7)

Dear Friend, In recent months you may have seen increased references to “fake news” and “alternative facts” in a wide variety of media reports. I’m sure we agree that accurate and reliable information is essential to an engaged citizenry—and certainly to students and faculty engaged in their academic work.

Libraries have long prided themselves on preserving and providing access to reliable information, without judgment.

It’s part of our core mission and an activity we take very seriously.

Even as technologies and habits change the way people find and share information, libraries have remained steadfast in this mission. We work daily to provide access to information by meeting the growing need for more online resources, for example, and by digitizing special collections unique to Maryland to make them broadly available. As experts in organizing information and managing data, we support research and teaching through innovative uses of technology.

EACH FALL, the Libraries look for a fun, creative way to engage students before the stress of midterms and finals takes hold.

This year, the Terpindor Wizarding Tournament invited students to learn about the Libraries’ spaces and services while completing wizarding challenges and interacting with the Libraries on social media.

The Harry Potter-inspired tournament, which ran just before the release of JK Rowling’s new movie, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, included eleven challenges designed to educate students about library exhibits, textbooks on reserve,

study spaces, equipment for loan, and special collections.

“The most popular challenge was finding the Monster Book of Monsters on reserve at McKeldin’s service desk,” said Aaron Ginoza, the Libraries’ Social Media Coordinator.

“It was great seeing students learning about accessing textbook reserves at McKeldin by interacting with a furry book with fangs.”

The students that completed the most wizarding challenges won t-shirts that featured a custom design inspired by the crest of Gryffindor, Harry Potter’s house at Hogwarts.

The Terpindor Wizarding Tournament was recognized with the only Gold Prize in the social media category of the 2017 CASE District II Accolade Awards.

The Monster Book of Monsters delighted students who checked it out from the textbooks on reserve program.

Priscilla Hudson A HARRY POTTER FAN since middle school, Priscilla Hudson, has worked in McKeldin Library for over a year. This fall, Priscilla’s knowledge of both Harry Potter and the Libraries contributed to our award-winning social media campaign.

“Even if you’re not a Harry Potter fan, you’re aware of it. It was literally our childhood. For the Libraries to tap into the nostalgia of a meaningful shared experience made a lot of sense,” said Priscilla. “This generation grew up with these stories and movies.”

Working closely with the Libraries’ communications team, Priscilla helped develop the details of the Wizarding Tournament.

The visit inspired the University Archives to ensure Driesell’s legacy through digitizing all basketball film and video from his tenure — a key aspect of the Archives’ efforts to preserve campus athletic history.

To support this initiative, the Libraries established a new giving opportunity for those interested in helping save basketball footage before it is lost to deterioration.

Similar to the University ­Archives’ campaign to preserve and digitize historical football film, this fund will support future projects to perma­ nent­ly save and make publicly avail­able basketball film and video from 1953 to the present. The items donated by Coach Driesell will be the focus of the first project supported by the new Basketball Footage Preservation and Access Fund.
