Math can be a challenging subject to tackle. In this newsletter, Gorgette Green-Hodnett shares her perspectives on what students can do to be successful and start off the semester strong. Gorgette is the Coordinator of Academic Enrichment Programs at the Teaching & Learning Transformation Center (TLTC) where she oversees the Math Success Program and other academic enrichment programs.

10 Refer To Math Course Materials From Prior Semesters

Do you tend to think of each class as a clean slate? Truthfully, there are skills and concepts that transfer from one course or another. So don’t throw away those notes or tests. You may find that those formerly-used materials can help you to review or relearn skills that you need this semester.

9 Refer To Math Course Materials From Prior Semesters

To be a success you must know what to expect and what is expected of you. Review your syllabus in its entirety. Use it to plan for the topics to review for a quiz. Use it to inform you of the study schedule you need to follow. Make time to attend office hours or to ask a TA for clarification on an assignment. 8 Attend The Class And Take Notes

It is important to attend class and to take notes. Participate in class by doing the required assignments/ readings so you are able to connect to what is being discussed. Take responsibility for getting what you need from the class by not relying on others to take or share their notes. Determine which modality works best for you and use it.
