Now that you have attended class and taken notes, now you can review the materials. There are many ways to assess your progress or to understand what you do and don’t know.

Are you familiar with concept or mind maps? Using concept maps is a learning strategy that allows you to visually organize or display information. Take notes from your lecture and reorganize them as a concept map to help you review and/or confirm your understanding of new information.

If you need help establishing a study plan, schedule time with your academic advisor, your classmate or roommate, or schedule a consultation with the Learning Assistant at TLTC. Send an email for more details to learn@umd.edu

6 Plan Ahead For Assessments And Other Graded Work

Because you are reviewing and practicing every day, you are “chunking” the information into smaller doses that make it easier to process and understand. Use the syllabus to identify what will be on each assessment and prepare accordingly.

5 Prepare By Properly Practicing The Practice Problems

Don’t wait until two days before the test to start practicing. Working through practice problems is a strategy that is widely used in university math courses. The skills built and strategies used with practice sets can help a student become more comfortable and confident in themselves.

4 Plan To Work With Others

Whether through formal tutoring, study groups or a private tutor, you will get better as you draw on your strengths and the strengths of others as you study, learn and review math. You can check each other’s progress and talk through the areas you do and don’t understand about a concept.

3 Be Prepared To Work With Others

You can achieve when you work with others. Join with others to study for an exam, plan to meet with classmates to exchange ideas and to clarify your understanding. Review your notes with your sibling or roommate. You can’t do it alone.

2 Utilize Course And Campus Resources

If you haven’t gone to tutoring.umd.edu to find campus tutoring options, now is a great time. Academic resources are organized by content area. TLTC sponsors the Guided Study Sessions Program (tltc. umd.edu/GSS) and the Math Success Program (tltc. umd.edu/mathsuccess) where you can collaborate and review course concepts.

1 Utilize Course And Campus Resources

Before you decide that you won’t be successful or you won’t earn an A, try to earn a B! Start early with a positive outlook. Try to find 2 - 3 ways to get the same outcome. Hang in there. Apply many of the tips above AND be determined that you will succeed.
