With a permanent collection of more than 7,000 art objects representing a range of cultures and periods of art history, the Tweed Museum of Art on the campus of the University of Minnesota Duluth is a major cultural and educational resource for the Upper Midwest. Beginning in the 1920s, George P. Tweed and his wife, Alice, began collecting 19th- and early 20th-century European and American paintings. After the death of Mr. Tweed in 1946, Mrs. Tweed saw the potential of the Tweed Collection and generously developed the funding for the present building, which was dedicated in 1958. An impressive and ongoing program of exhibitions, publications, and educational opportunities has fulfilled Alice Tweed Tuohy’s wish that the Tweed Museum of Art become “an educational and cultural resource for the university, the surrounding region, and the nation.”

Experience the Tweed Museum of Art through its... Collections The Tweed’s permanent collection houses works by such artists as Picasso, Corot, Millet, Dorothea Lange, and Robert Motherwell. Thanks to the generosity of Glenn C. Nelson, UMD Professor Emeritus, the Tweed holds a major collection of ceramic works from Scandinavia, Korea, Japan, and the U.S. In 1981, Potlatch Corporation donated 374 images of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police Force. Recently, the Tweed received a major gift of more than 400 American Indian artifacts and artworks, and an extensive research library, from the collection of the late Richard E. and Dorothy Rawlings Nelson of Duluth.

International exchange is a unique part of the UMD School of Fine Arts experience, with strong relationships to universities and conservatories around the world. An outstanding example, the Turkish American Cultural Alliance, initiated in January 2005 by the School of Fine Arts’ Dean Jack Bowman, is celebrating its fourth year. The faculty and students at UMD and Baskent University in Ankara, Turkey, have established a bond of communication and creative exchange through innovative collaborative projects in graphic design. These projects provide a wonderful opportunity for UMD students to gain an understanding of the riches of historical and contemporary Turkish visual culture and for our students to serve as ambassadors of UMD abroad. In addition, the Alliance nurtures collaborations between the UMD Departments of Music and Theatre and three more universities in Turkey: for music, Dokuz Eylßl University in Izmir and Hacettepe University in Ankara, and for theatre, Istanbul University State Conservatory in Istanbul.
