FPO To the people who inquire
“What can you do with a fine arts degree?” we respond “Go ask a CEO, a doctor, or even our UMD Chancellor.” No matter what we are inspired to do in life, each of us has a role to play—in business, in our careers, in our everyday activities—that can be accentuated and enhanced by developing our imaginations and intuitions with a degree in the fine arts. Just ask the company president who leads thousands of employees. Or the physician who must consistently perform under pressure. Or our Chancellor, whose theatre background has prepared her to stand in the spotlight of her career. Whatever you think this degree might be, it will teach you to think critically, to solve problems creatively, and to bring this professional and powerful skill-set into any career your choose.
Webber Music Hall is an acoustic and architectural masterpiece with seating for 350 and a concert stage for students, faculty and professionals.
Now, if your aspirations include
art and design, music, theatre or dance, we’ll give you the opportunity to show the world what you can do. The Tweed Museum of Art, our on-campus museum, houses over 3,500 works in its permanent collection and presents more than 40 exhibitions a year, including those of UMD art majors and faculty.
The world is moving from the information age to the conceptual age.
Lucky for you,

we’ve been there for years.
At the School of Fine Arts, you’re not merely measured by your performance in the classroom, because your performance is the classroom. Your concerts, your stage productions, your gallery exhibitions, your portfolio—this is where you put in place the fundamentals with which we have prepared you.
This next new age of intellectualism isn’t merely about thinking differently, it’s about being able to express your thoughts, ideas and emotions in ways that most dramatically impact the thoughts of those around you. And when it comes to making an impact, we can offer proof of our performance.
After that, you’ll have the courage and capability to go anywhere.
International Collaboration
We bring students of music, theatre, dance, graphic arts, and studio arts together under one leadership, so you’ll be exposed to virtually endless ideas and inspirations. In our Department of Art and Design, for example, fine artists share space with designers—an idea unheard of in academia and unparalleled in it’s capacity for collaborative work.
• Musical tours of Africa, Brazil and all across Europe • An Italian International Festival with performances and performers trading stages across the world • Art alliances in Turkey and the opportunity for another international festival • Faculty working and performing all over the globe
We offer the smallest class sizes of any college on campus.
Study Abroad
Our School of Fine Arts is the only unified visual and performing arts school in the Minnesota system.
Your largest class won’t exceed two dozen students; your smallest might be under six. And every class you take will offer one-on-one instruction—a direct connection with performers and professionals. We’re also the smallest collegiate unit at UMD, which means individualized attention and a greater opportunity for your work to stand out.
Our Department of Music is accredited by the National Association of Schools Music. Becoming an accredited school isn’t simply something you try out for. It is something that is earned by meeting and maintaining the threshold standards of our peers—something that has been achieved by only 615 individuals and institutions in the nation.
We’ve sent five Theatre Department productions to the stage of the Kennedy Center. Stage productions are held in the Marshall Performing Arts Center, a 725-seat thrust/proscenium theatre, with an additional experimental theatre for smaller productions.
Acting out.
Few honors are greater than seeing the lights of this great setting come up on your performance. And we’ve performed well: six UMD School of Fine Arts actors have won the seven-state regional Irene Ryan Acting Scholarship—five in the last eight years.
Our university is Minnesota’s out-state cultural center. With facilities, productions, performances and professors that rival those you’ll find anywhere, our School of Fine Arts brings music, art, theatre, dance and design to scores of audiences from around the region.
• Experience the cultures of other countries • Enjoy classes in France, Italy, and almost anywhere else
Internships and Apprenticeships
• In our own museum • In other UMD departments • Through design partnerships with ad agencies, businesses, and organizations
Sieur Du Luth Summer Arts Festival
• Performers from UMD and 20 countries coming together for a seven-week summer season • World-class performances in theatre, opera, jazz, chamber music, and big band
Undergraduate Research
• Develop a research project in your particular area of interest

“There is a difference between a job and a career. A job means fulfilling an expectation. A career is how you prepare yourself for what’s next. You have to ask: what are you doing to improve yourself? What are you doing to help yourself go farther?” Jake Konerza Merchandise Planning Manager, Target Corporation LSBE Graduate, 2004
The School of Fine Arts also hosts and performs at various special events at Glensheen, the University’s Jacobean revival lakeshore estate.
“Target is on track to become a $100 billion company.
