WELCOME TO THE UNIVERSITY OF MARYLAND EASTERN SHORE ABOUT UMES:

UMES was originally founded in 1886 as a historically black college with 16 acres, 9 students, and 2 educators. But as you see, we have grown far beyond our humble beginnings. Now, we are one of the top 20 HBCUs, a doctoral-research institution, and a top performer in social mobility. At UMES, we are trendsetters and record breakers. With a wealth of opportunities, a highly individualized approach, and academic resources, UMES is able to encourage and empower all students-whatever their passion, whatever their goals-to achieve their very best. The campus encompasses over 1,100 acres in historic Princess Anne, Maryland-which creates the ideal environment for learning. Yet, it is only a short drive from Washington, DC, Baltimore, and Philadelphia.

HOW TO USE OUR VISITORS’ GUIDE:

Our Visitor’s Guide pairs perfectly with our Google Maps Tour. Scan the QR code to the right to launch the tour from your mobile device. There, you will find images of some of our buildings and more information about our campus.

Miss Ella Fitzgerald is remembered for her contributions to jazz music. Her unique, velvety voice is one of the characteristics that distinguished her from every other rising star of her time. So it is only fitting that our Performing Arts Center be named after her.

CENTER FOR PERFORMING ARTS

In this building, we often hold special events such as Freshman Convocation, Honors Convocation, concerts, and the annual Homecoming step show. In addition, there are theatrical performances and musical performances held by students each semester.

This building features classroom spaces, lecture halls, and lab spaces. It also houses the offices for our Honors Program and many of our Schools including the School of Education, Social Sciences, and the Arts; the School of Pharmacy and Health Professions; and the School of Agricultural and Natural Sciences.
