Spring 2016 calendar
RHYTHM & HUES
Welcome to the University of Maryland Eastern Shore We’re rolling out the welcome mat as our beautiful campus plays host to a profusion of activities this spring. Take your pick from a bright bouquet of events in the fine, performing and culinary arts. Like focal flowers in a floral arrangement, UMES’ February events center around two main themes— Homecoming and Black History Month. Learn more about the African-American experience through Black History Month selections including exhibits, special events and lectures. Our Mosely Gallery delivers a free exhibit February 4-March 10, “History Continues: Contemporary African-American Artists.” The display features works by young, emerging black artists from the Baltimore/ Washington corridor that use different approaches to explore the relevance of black history and how current events and culture shape their works. Exhibits by students and Delmarva artists fill out the rest of the academic year in the gallery. The Black History Month show is pollinated with accompanying events including an on-site art installation by Maya Freelon Asante, a Boston School of the Museum of Fine Arts graduate, and a gallery talk by UMES’ director of African-American Studies. February’s Homecoming activities (Feb. 14-21) sit atop a strong stem supported by men’s and women’s basketball games against South Carolina State University. The campus community and alumni invite you to the game and tailgate as we cheer on the Hawks!
Events, in the HBCU tradition, surround the game like petals in bloom. A hip-hop recording artist headlines the popular UMES Homecoming Concert, while we also bring in professional entertainers for the gospel and comedy shows. The stars of our National Pan Hellenic Step Show are members of our very own Greek-lettered organizations. The Ella Fitzgerald Center burgeons with the budding talents of our students at free musical performances throughout the spring semester by our Concert and Gospel choirs along with UMES’ Wind, Jazz and Popular Music ensembles. If food is your fancy, then make sure to reserve a seat at the ever-popular Gourmet Luncheon series presented by our Hospitality and Tourism Management students or the Dinner Theater, which also features a show by UMES’ Drama Society. Let us brighten your day like a spring bouquet. Experience the Rhythm & Hues of the University of Maryland Eastern Shore. Keep our calendar close and visit us often! Sincerely, Juliette B. Bell, Ph.D. President
