Bawcom announces plan to step down end of May Trustees select O’Rear as next president, name Bawcom chancellor Change has been on the horizon this fall with news of transition plans at the highest level of the university. On August 29, President Jerry G. Bawcom called a special faculty/staff assembly to announce that he would be stepping down as president at the end of the academic school year. As the assembly of employees sat silently and listened, Dr. Bawcom had to stop momentarily to regain his composure as he spoke about his “wonderful 18 years of serving at this great institution.” He stated that after 40 years in higher education leadership, 25 of those years as president, he was looking forward to serving in a less stressful capacity. When Dr. Bawcom concluded his remarks, Board Chair Andy Davis joined Dr. Bawcom on the stage, and the two longtime friends embraced. Board Chair Davis then announced to the assembly that the Executive Committee of the Board of Trustees had made a unanimous resolution to appoint Dr. Bawcom as chancellor beginning June 1, 2009. As chancellor, Dr. Bawcom will continue to have an active role at the university, particularly in the areas of public relations and fund raising. According to Davis, that role will also include providing continuity during the leadership transition. Trustees work to name successor Following Dr. Bawcom’s announcement of his decision to step down, the Executive Committee of the board began working to ensure a smooth

transition for the university. Board Chair Andy Davis immediately appointed a Presidential Selection Committee to start the selection process. In subsequent meetings, the committee members began weighing their options and worked diligently to determine the next steps for the university. According to Davis, the Presidential Selection Committee’s discussions continued to lead them back to one person, Dr. Randy O’Rear. “Our deliberations led us to one clear conclusion: we had the right candidate already here at UMHB, one who has a proven track record in higher education leadership. Dr. O’Rear’s successful oversight of the daily operations of the campus for the past three and a half years has been evident to the board. We are very grateful for his outstanding leadership,” said Davis.

Dr. Randy O’Rear named president The Presidential Selection Committee presented its findings to the board’s Nominating Committee. On September 19, in a regularly scheduled trustee meeting, a special executive session was called behind closed doors. In a unanimous decision based on the recommendation of the Nominating Committee, Dr. Randy O’Rear was named the 19th president and CEO of the university, effective June 1, 2009. “We are extremely confident that as president, Dr. O’Rear will assure the continuity of our mission, our Christian principles and our proficiency in higher education. Because of his long service and intricate knowledge of UMHB, he will hold constant those things we value while assuring the university remains responsive to each new generation and continues to evolve UMHB LIFE | 3

in our ongoing quest for higher excellence,” said Board Chair Davis. Dr. O’Rear will be the first president of UMHB who is also an alumnus of the university. He graduated from UMHB with a bachelor’s degree in business administration in 1988 and an MBA in 1997. O’Rear earned a doctorate in Higher Education Administration from Baylor University in 2004. O’Rear has served at UMHB for 20 years, with the past three and one half

years as Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer. President Bawcom had high praise for the Board’s decision on the presidential selection. “Dr. Randy O’Rear is an excellent choice by the Board of Trustees to become the next president of UMHB,” said Bawcom. “He is a man of integrity with tremendous experience; he is energetic and will lead with a team-centered, inclusive approach.” —Carol Woodward

Christian Studies welcomes dean Dr. Tim Crawford was named dean of the College of Christian Studies effective August 18. Prior to coming to UMHB, Crawford served in the Division of Christian Studies at Bluefield College in Bluefield, Virginia, as both a faculty member and administrator for 18 years. “Dr. Crawford comes to UMHB with a wealth of administrative expertise, scholarly production and teaching skill,” said Dr. Steve Oldham, interim provost. Crawford had been recognized twice

at Bluefield with the Outstanding Teacher Award, and students presented him with the Alpha Chi Educator of the Year award. He is the immediate past president of the National Association of Baptist Professors of Religion. Dr. Crawford earned his B.A. in religion from Samford University in Birmingham, Alabama; a Master of Divinity from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth; and a Ph.D. in Old Testament from Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky.

Lecture reminds Christians to care for creation Suzii Paynter, director of the Baptist General Convention of Texas Christian Life Commission, visited UMHB in September to deliver the inaugural Environmental Issues and Christian Faith Lecture, sponsored by the College of Science. Paynter described the Christian Life Commission as the place “where faith meets the public square.” As director of the commission, she is called upon to speak for the BGCT on issues that affect Christians and Texans. “The Bible is clear: the Creation is God’s artistry,” Paynter told the audience. “God’s extravagance and artistry is our joy, and as Luke 12:48 tells us, ‘From everyone to whom much has been given, much will be required.’ ” “Christian discipleship therefore includes environmental stewardship,” Paynter said. She offered a number of ways that Christians might care for the world they have been given: driving fuel efficient cars, conserving water and other natural resources, investigating energy conservation options and renewable energy sources and focusing on creation care in worship services.

Successful business opens doors for sharing Gospel in China What it takes to be successful in business is applying Christian principles—that was the key message of Dwight Nordstrom, who presented the Heavin Lecture in Christian Principles and Business Leadership in October. After 25 years of living in and running businesses in China, Nordstrom, a member of the Nordstrom department stores family, has returned to the U.S. to teach his successful business model. “I am an entrepreneur. I am also a missionary,” said Nordstrom. “To be a high caliber company, it takes ethics and teamwork.” Nordstrom teaches that the Bible and the ethics of the Bible have been statistically proven to be all that is necessary to survive and succeed in business. “We teach our employees these principles: don’t steal, don’t covet, don’t lie – that nothing justifies a lie, that morality inside and outside of the workplace makes a difference.” His company, Pacific Resources International, has more than a dozen Christian for-profit businesses in China with approximately 1,400 employees. In each of his operations in China, he encourages employees to start small group Bible studies and home churches. In one location he started with 139 employees. Not one of them was a Christian, and not one had a Bible. They had never heard of Jesus and considered themselves to be atheists. Yet in that location he has seen multiple Christian study-groups form and several home-church fellowships start. Christian principles are enormously important to his business goals, Nord6 | UMHB LIFE

strom said. He has two simple business goals: 1) to survive and to grow his company to meet the goals of investors, and 2) to communicate the gospel to employees and encourage them to start Bible studies and local house-church fellowships. Nordstrom, who has recently published the book Transforming the World Through Business, has seen a tremendous growth of the church in China in highly concentrated population areas. Working 60 hours a week, Nordstrom considers himself fortunate when he can share his faith with one employee per month. His advice for success in the 21st century is to learn a language, especially Chinese or Farsi, and to “share your faith.” “You can do it,” he told the business majors in the room. “This is a great way to share the gospel. The world is merging. Business is an integral part of

reaching people for Christ.” The annual Heavin Lecture in Christian Principles and Business Leadership is sponsored by Gary and Diane Heavin, owners of Waco-based Curves International.

Political foes stress need for national unity at October humanities lecture Two of the country’s liveliest political journalists, Bob Beckel and Cal Thomas, brought their wit and political insight to UMHB in October, at a lecture co-sponsored by the College of Humanities and the Institute for the Humanities of Salado.

The men, who are on different sides of the political spectrum, bantered back and forth with each other for more than an hour as they gave their views on how to bring the country back together after the divisive presidential election. “Our goal is to move politicians toward more civil partisanship,” said Thomas. At the conclusion, the two sat at a table signing the best-selling book which they co-authored, Common Ground: How to Stop the Partisan War That Is Destroying America, a creative look at saving the “middle ground” from the Red State/Blue State madness.

Women’s soccer closes season with tournament play Despite ups and downs, team sets single season record for victories for the tournament,” Brown said. This was the first ever back-to-back conference tournament berths for the Crusader women’s soccer team in the history of their program. The team also matched the school single season record for victories with a 9-4 talley in regular season ASC play. The tournament loss was tough for the young team, but the future looks bright.

Coach Brown said, “I think we are in a good spot for next year. We should get new recruits who will complement us, and next year we should be better than this year.” Although the season has ended, the team will still be guaranteed one more game this school year, and that’s the annual alumni game scheduled in the spring. For the second straight year, and only the third time in the history of women’s soccer at UMHB, the Lady Cru team advanced to the American Southwest Conference Championship tournament this fall. Women’s soccer began in 1998, the same year the university started Crusader football. The program has had a tumultuous ten years, but under head coach Meghann Brown it is making its presence felt in the ASC. Going into the tournament as the No. 5 seed, the Lady Cru faced fourth-ranked U.T.-Tyler in the opening round of the conference play. Although the team lost in the first round 6-0, they were still proud of their historic run to the playoffs. With 13 underclassmen, the Lady Crusaders were a relatively young team this year. “I told my girls, we have something to prove; we are a team to be reckoned with,” Brown said. Coach Brown attributed the season’s success to “the team working as a whole quickly.” Originally ranked sixth in ASC preseason polls, the Lady Cru completed a regular season that saw them undergo a six-game winning streak, a heartbreaking loss to the University of the Ozarks, and seasondefining wins against Louisiana College and Mississippi College. The biggest obstacle the Lady Crusaders overcame was inconsistency. “We have been like a family, in that we grew together through the sixgame winning streak and rebounded from our loss to the Ozarks to qualify

Freshman art major Ellen Buhrow slides into the goalkeeper from Louisiana College; the Lady Crusaders came away with a 5-0 victory over the LC Wildcats.

According to Brown, the team will lose only four players this year to graduation. Next season they will return with their leading-goal scorers, junior Mickie Arredondo and freshman Lexy Smith, who together had a combined total of 16 goals and ten assists.

Homecoming draws crowds for football, fellowship, and fun Alumni returned to Belton on November 7 and 8 to share memories and renew friendships at Homecoming. Following the theme of “Back in the Day,” the weekend offered activities for a wide range of interests. On Friday evening a record number of alumni attended reunion dinners and enjoyed a pep rally complete with fireworks and the burning of the UMHB letters. The play “Twelve Angry Jurors” was offered as a Friday night entertainment option, and late-nighters gathered at Shelton Theater for a dessert party and the traditional circle of songs. On Saturday, alums enjoyed Breakfast with the President, a time for

President Bawcom to address questions from the group. Special interest groups such as Historical Phila, Royal Academia, and alumni from the psychology graduate programs held mini reunions of their own before heading to the stadium for a tailgate party featuring burgers from Outback Steakhouse. The football game against Howard Payne provided a positive wrap-up to the weekend. Halftime activities included the crowning of seniors Martha Sicking and Tatenda Tavaziva as Homecoming Queen and King, and the Crusaders dominated the Yellow Jackets with a final score of 67-0.

Paul and Jane Meyer Christian Studies Center opens its doors with service of praise and thanksgiving With fanfare and grandeur, university officials ceremonially cut the purple ribbon on the new Paul and Jane Meyer Christian Studies Center on Thursday, October 9. In front of a crowd of more than 300 people, the president of the university, Dr. Jerry G. Bawcom, and First Lady Vicky Bawcom stood with Paul and Jane Meyer of Waco to officially open the building which was named in the Meyers’ honor after their family foundation provided the lead $1 million toward the building’s construction. which the concert choir performed, major benefactors were recognized and information about the new facility was shared. “Once again we find ourselves in a magnificent building, which is a tribute to our trustees, alumni, administrators, faculty and benefactors who work to provide the very best for our students,” said Bawcom. The new 18,800-square-foot building, designed by Temple architect Larry Neal and constructed by Blair/Williams Construction of Belton, provides space for classes, meetings and special events. The first-floor foyer leads visitors

to a suite of offices for the dean of Christian Studies and a student lounge. There are four classrooms, sized to accommodate students enrolled in Old and New Testament classes each year. A conference room offers an alternative space for smaller seminar courses. The first floor also includes the Manning Chapel, designed to hold 275 people, which was filled to overflow during the dedication ceremony. The chapel has vaulted ceilings and stained glass windows. The university anticipates it will become a central gathering place for meetings, for teaching and for students to worship. At the center of the second floor
