About Us

E

lijah Li, Kyung Hyo and volunteers that identify as cultural minorities in LGBT community who wanted change founded Umiius Magazine. Umiius was primarily created to provide a voice for the forgotten LGBT minorities in cademia communities. Their experiences matriculating through college led them o the conclusion that minority LGBT groups were struggling. The atmosphere on any campuses did not leave room for them to flourish or express themselves freely n their own terms. After realizing the issues on campuses were just one small facet f the issues at hand, Umiius decided to expand its interest.

N

ow understanding these segregations extended well beyond the realms of academia, every source of change can be traced back to that pivotal moment that provided that spark to actually do something. Inspiration originated om the movie Brother to Brother (2004) directed by Rodney Evan. Brother to rother’s follows the life of Perry, Anthony Mackie, an African American student ecently disowned by his family for being gay and his struggles. His life takes a turn hen he begins to interact with Bruce Nugent, Rodger Robinson, who was an author nd contributor to the literary magazine Fire!!. Fire magazine was conceived during he artist times of the Harlem Renaissance. The authors of this magazine wanted n arena to express the changing experiences of younger African Americans and sed Fire!! to facilitate the exploration of issues in the Black community that was ot in front of the mainstream African American society. This included issues such s homosexuality, bisexuality, interracial relationships, promiscuity, prostitution, and olor prejudice within the Black community itself.

F

ollowing in the footsteps of our ancestors Umiius took the concept of Fire! and brought it to the next level. Instead of just making a magazine treating the immediate lack of representation, we created a magazine that aims to qually represent the Global LGBT Community. We hope our magazine Represents ou, Inspires you, Supports you as well as Empowers you to be who you wish to be, ecause You Matter.

Eating Healthy latest tips • what’s on • keeping it thin

Stay sexy during the HolidaySeason by Sheryl Ingoglia Sheryl Ingoglia: Health Coach http://sheryl-ingoglia.healthcoach.integrativenutrition.com So here we are again with the upcoming holiday season looming ahead. As Thanksgiving approaches, just hearing the very word Thanksgiving makes your mouth water. This is the hardest time of year to remain healthy. Most of us spend November and December torn between remaining healthy and pure gluttony. Right now you may be daydreaming about my favorite holiday… gravy smothered mashed potatoes, sweet potato pie with ooey gooey marshmallows, pumpkin pie with homemade whipped cream and a hot apple crisp with a scoop of Haagen Dazs on the side. So many times before the holiday season you have told yourself that you were going to “be good” and right before you know it you are on your third serving, soon to be followed by that next-day-one-last -Thanksgiving-sandwich full of everything. Stuffing yourself until it HURTS! And then comes the next NEXT morning… after you had promised yourself you would NEVER let this happen again, you just had a filthy one night stand with an entire apple pie. You wake up full of guilt and regret, you have lied to your body - all the promises broken! What have you done? The holidays can be stressful for many reasons, so eating is one area where you can remain in control this year. You may be entering this holiday season in either one of these two situations. The first…is that you are still rocking that tight body from the summer, but you fear this may be the beginning of the end of those rock hard abs. Or on the other hand, you may not quite be where you want to be, but want to be sure that these holidays don’t push you further over the edge for the New Year. In both circumstances, there are many ways to remain happy, healthy and tight for the upcoming holiday season. PAGE

6

The first thing to do is to make sure you are eating healthy ahead of time. I’m talking about extreme clean eating: fruits, veggies, nuts, seeds and beans. Nothing processed! NO-THING! If you are going to someone else’s place for Thanksgiving it is important to keep your home “clean” so that you don’t have any temptations before you get there. When you wake up, I recommend drinking hot lemon water before anything. It fills you up and energizes you for the day. I would also recommend making your own green juice, (if you don’t have a juicer, a blender is a fine substitute). Look up a recipe if you are not yet comfortable making juice. It’s easier than you think! You can also freestyle it: vegetables like kale, spinach, carrots plus some seasonal goodies, like fresh organic apples make a quick and nutritious way to juice. This will fill you up and make you feel good. Now you have done something good for your body. Eat some fruit or vegetables when you feel like you are ready for something a bit more substantial. I don’t care how early it is; I have trained my body to eat salads as early as 7am. If you are not there yet, have some fruit or a hard-boiled egg. Before you hit the holiday dinner table, hit the gym. Give yourself a hard-core, sweat dripping, “I didn’t know even know I had muscles in there” workout. Anything cardio will due. If you like to run, then run. If you can’t hit the gym, slip in a dvd like Insanity. Exercise is so important because it makes you feel amazing by releasing endorphins. If you feel good and

feed your body right before a big dinner, you’ll be more likely So now you are truly prepared to have an amazing, healthy to listen to your body during the dinner. Thanksgiving with some well-deserved indulgence and zero guilt and regret. Don’t beat yourself up if you happen to have Now that you are fed, exercised and prepared for the event, a second slice of sweet potato pie - after all, your Aunt only it is extremely important to have a game plan before entering makes it once a year! Instead, let go of guilt and put your “the danger zone.” Upon entering, drink at least 1 or 2 glasses energy into juicing, eating clean foods and getting some cardio of water. This will fill you up and prevent overeating. So simple in. After all, it’s only six months until you pull the bathing suit and so important! If you know the host will have healthy apps, back out of the drawer! then be sure to focus on those when you begin to eat. If not, then you are the guest that will be bringing these foods to the party. Fill yourself up on carrot sticks and celery sticks and hummus. Bring a colorful fruit salad on a beautiful tray so you will be visually drawn to it. Remember you are eating with your eyes as well! Although you are focused on staying fit and health, do not forget to enjoy yourself. Being healthy also does not mean depriving yourself. Find some items that you have been craving since last Thanksgiving and be sure to make a smaller section on your plate for them. Enjoy every single bite. Think about what you are eating and truly pay attention to it, rather than stuffing your face as fast as you can and then looking down to an empty plate wondering, “Where did it all go?” But at the same time as you are enjoying this delicious food, make sure to fill up most of your plate with the foods that don’t come with a side of guilt. Have some lean turkey, freshly steamed broccoli, salad or whatever other vegetables may be available. And remember - if you think there may not be anything healthy available to put on your plate, it is your responsibility to bring it for yourself.

I sing unto you!

Marcus Anthony Acosta

My voice trembles forgotten dreams, Shattered hopes ripped at the seams. Through the darkness you hear my song, And you realize the road has been long. Knowing that I stand with but a chosen few, Mother and Father, I sing unto you.

Through the pain, I have endured, And beyond these walls, I see there’s more, But you turned away and heard not my song, One of tears, loss, and mourn. Living in world lone and blue, Brother and Sister, I still unto you. The door opened and I saw the light, The light of day, not of night. You loved me dear and learned my song, Then kept near and sang along, You showed me bliss I never knew, My dear sweet love, I sing unto you. My long journey coming to an end, All my pain I have learned to mend. It was you who wrote my song, And carried me when I did wrong, In harsh times a smile in me you did brew, My sacred soul, I sing unto you.

Thanks Giving & Receiving Minister & Life Coach: Dawn Shedrick

Tis the season of falling leaves, light sweaters, golden sunsets and pumpkin flavored everything! Tis also the season of gratitude and giving. The Thanksgiving holiday’s origins notwithstanding, this time of year now elicits a collective spirit of love, gratitude and generosity that calls us forward to be of service. Although most of the focus is on the giving, the beauty of it is that in giving, we all receive. Every act of kindness ripples out and we may never see its effects. Yet we still reap the benefits, in some way, of each gesture. My mother is the epitome of generosity and service. She taught young people to read as a literacy tutor; mentored a young girl through to womanhood as a Big Sister; coordinated food drives with her colleagues in her employer’s parking lot; and raised funds for various community based organizations. One day, when I was about 10 years old, I sat with Mommie as she developed a reading lesson plan for her 20 year old student Lois. I asked why she was only working with one student, weren’t there millions and millions of people who didn’t know how to read? She gently placed her pen on table, lowered her glasses and said, “You can never dismiss the effect you can have on the world by just giving to one person. When Lois learns to read, she can get a job that will pay her enough to pay her bills and do anything in life that she desires, like travel, go to concerts, collect antiques or whatever! Most of all it will boost her confidence, which can reduce the likelihood of her experiencing depression, addiction, crime and other costs to our society.” Yes, that’s how my mother spoke to me at 10 years old. What my mother didn’t say (but really did say), was that we all receive innumerable benefits of her act of kindness with just one person. I can tell you all that Lois obtained her Bachelor’s degree and has worked as a paralegal for more than a decade, specializing in family law. She’s married with two children and…drum roll please…is a literacy volunteer! These are only a few of the tangible ripples, think about all of the other ways my mother’s contribution to Lois’ life effects the world each and every day? Every smile, toy, book, scholarship, hug, Thanksgiving dinner that we give this season are gifts that we give the world, and ourselves. Every act of service is a sacred transaction where we give of ourselves, and in the same moment receive joy, love, gratitude and so much more. The LGBT community is a demand for these sacred transactions: • LGBT youth are twice as likely as their non-LGBT peers to be bullied and assaulted. • 40% of homeless youth identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual and/or transgender • 35% of transgender youth have attempted suicide at least once. • Fifty thousand people are diagnosed with HIV every year; multiply that number by four and you have the number of people who have it and don’t know. • More than half of LGBT elders over age 55 are socially isolated With all of these issues, and more, affecting our lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender brothers and sisters every day, we have much to receive by giving of ourselves, our money and our love this Thanksgiving. Start by reaching out to your local LGBT service organization to find out how you can start your own ripple effect. Here are a few national LGBT organizations that can always use our support: National Black Justice Coalition www.nbjc.org Astrea Lesbian Foundation for Justice www.astraeafoundation.org The Trevor Project www.thetrevorproject.org Advocates for Youth www.advocatesforyouth.org Gay Lesbian Straight Education Network (GLSEN) www.glsen.org Trans People of Color Coalition www.transpoc.org

Job Hunt: ”The Interview”

By: Deroll Scarlett

What are your thoughts about companies who demand that you give them your Social Security number, Drivers license number and Date Of Birth on a job application? Is the only option to just pass? Asking for an applicant’s date of birth is prohibited. PERIOD. It leaves you wide open for an age discrimination suit. Using a social security number as an employee identifier is illegal. Yes, you can segregate the information request, but you cannot make it mandatory until an offer of employment is made. Driver’s License Number is not required unless driving is part of the job. All a company has to do is make the offer of employment contingent upon a positive background check and negative drug test if required. If it is mandatory, you have three options. If you were sent by a recruiter, speak to that person and tell them how uncomfortable you are about providing the information - especially your date of birth. A company should not be asking when you graduated from college, let alone when you were born. If not, then think about the culture of the company that would do things that are illegal or not appropriate. If you are unemployed and receiving unemployment benefits, then talk to someone at that office. The Social Security Number and Date of Birth should never be given on an employment application. It should only be given after a candidate is hired. Any company which is involved is requesting this information is clearly not aware of the laws and regulations or the impact and exposure those questions represent.

What are your salary expectations? It depends on who “someone” is. If you are speaking with a recruiter, you need to be forthright about your salary requirements, keeping in mind the whole benefit package, not just a dollar figure. If you are talking to the hiring manager or decision-maker, you have several options, but the best is to return the question with “Can you tell me what range you have budgeted for the position?” You first need to answer a set of questions for yourself: 1. What is the salary/comp package I think (I know) the company is offering for this position. 2. What is a fair salary/comp package based on today’s market and how long I have been out of work? 3. At what figure will I definitely reject this job? 4. What is the salary/total compensation package I would like them to offer me? 5. At what figure will I consider this job but not accept it on the spot? 6. At what figure will I accept this job on the spot no questions asked? When speaking to a recruiter, ask them to answer question 1 first based on their insider knowledge and then tell them your answers to questions 3 – 6 and find out about the total compensation package at this company. Now when asked about salary by the company, the answer varies depending on how far along in the interview/hire process the question is asked. What you need to remember is this is a negotiation at all times so nothing is set in stone on either side until the deal is done. This is why you need to know what’s in your mind first and play your cards close to the vest until an actual offer is made; as I always tell my candidates “You can’t accept or reject an offer that’s never made. Your job is to get the offer and then negotiate the terms before you accept it.” When asked in the initial interview this question is generally a feeling out process, if asked during the final interview, it is more serious. This is why you must know the interview and hire process for the company, preferably before or during the first face-to-face interview. It pays to know the range the company is looking to pay as well as the general range of the position in your location. Whenever possible, I suggest answering the question with a question of your own prefaced with your desire for the position. Example: I’m very excited about working for XCVV & Co. and see this as a good match for me and the company, that is why I did my homework to answer this question I knew you’d ask before coming for an interview. However I do not know your total comp package so I could not factor that in and that will have a bearing on my answer and how flexible I can be. What I found is the salary for this position for someone with my experience and skills is between $70k-$90k, which I believe is fair; can I assume this position falls into that range as well? Another great resource for salary information is www.salary.com. You input the title of the

role you are interviewing for and the zip code of the role; it gives you 5-15 job descriptions. You then read until you find the one that BEST matches the role you are interviewing for, click the green button at the top and it will give you the bell curve for salaries for that type of role in that zip code. You can then decide where in that range you REALISTICALLY fall based on your experience, you can then use that salary info for that question to cite a range. While a company MAY be able to consider your past range as additional information when it comes to an actual offer, the reality is that the range for that role in that company is based on the value of that role to the company, not what you were paid previously. You will need to know a salary range before your first conversation with the company, most recruiters will ask this and they do need a number. You may also be asked this as part of your online application; if you cite a number too high above the range for that role, you won’t be considered.

After applying for a job, if the hiring manager did not contact me after two or three weeks what should I do? There is no definite answer for this. You can either email them to inquire your status or concentrate on the next available opportunity. Sometimes, employers are busy with other priorities that they may take time to make a decision, so don’t be discouraged. Follow up! Often, hiring managers have many applications and an e-mail or phone call, can get your application to the top of the pile and, at least, get it looked at. You should follow up. They can hear your voice, which connects them to your resume. It’s only right to acknowledge someone who has interviewed though I know this is not always done. That’s why I would still encourage someone - if they really want the job or think they did a solid interview - to call and ask if a decision has been made. This will allow that person to move on or find out if there is a time frame when they can expect a decision. I tend to be rather assertive in getting information that impacts my life or career. Why Should you send a follow-up “Thank You” letter? Follow-up by phone & email. I am of the mind that a Thank You letter should be hand-delivered whenever possible. If not hand delivered, perhaps couriered over the next day, no later. Delivering the letter in person, dressed appropriately of course, shows a keen and sincere interest, as well as giving the opportunity to ‘be seen’ once more, & provides one with a chance to observe the work environment ‘in action’. Also, a ‘hand written’ thank you has a very powerful and memorable impact vs. an email. Personally I always hand write a Thank you for a in-person interview, and email one for a telephone interview. Take a control position once you nail the interview and keep in mind that ‘inter-viewing’ is always a ‘two-way street’. A thank you letter is like breathing to me, it is a common professional courtesy, and another marketing tool for you to shine with your writing abilities, and keen interest in the position. When you do receive the dreaded ‘merge reject letter’, I would suggest, (depending on the level of the position and what transpired during the course of the interview in terms of ‘rapport’ building), * ask the interviewer direct questions as to why you were not chosen, and * ‘ask for a referral’ to any firm or professional they know that may need someone with your particular skill sets & personality profile. At the very least, ‘keep me in mind’..... Remember, THEY contacted YOU for an interview - obviously you did something right to make that happen - they were impressed enough with you on paper - why wouldn’t another firm be.....

Just Head

By: Elijah Li

Ever since I was little I’ve always been deemed as being a “thinker” or “always in my head”. There’s nothing wrong with this because a lot of profound conversations and realizations have sprouted from this form of self-reflection. I felt that it would be a waste not to share some of these profound “Aha” moment with my community. Through the guise of the column entitled “Just Head” will share some of my thoughts this month about relationships.

I

One of the most recent reoccurrences in my life is the desire to be in a relationship. At some point or another I feel that everyone approaches this “Stage”. But I’ve always been in this stage ever since I truly accepted the fact I was gay. This didn’t hit me until I ran into an old friend in passing that mentioned, “Ever since I’ve known you, you’ve had this longing desire to be in a relationship”. At that moment it hit me that I’ve actually never been in a relationship but have very much-desired to be in one. As I was growing up I hid behind many excuses as to why I couldn’t be in a relationship. My favorite excuse was that I was a full-time student and my education came before anything. While I was in school I’d be in school and if you complained about not spending enough time with me I would end whatever was developing because “ You didn’t understand or respect that my education was the most important thing ever”. My other excuse that I stood behind was that I lived at the end the Earth, known as Laurelton, Queens. If I needed to go anywhere I needed to take a bus just to get to Jamaica Station and the rely on the great old MTA subway system to get me where I was going. I think I purposely used to talk to guys that lived on the other side of New York City like Northern Queens, Staten Island, “Flatlands” Brooklyn and Yonkers just to see if they would come out to Queens to see me. At times I do feel that these “Excuses” had some validity to them, But I had to take a step back and realize that the common denominator in these failed attempts in forming and sustaining relationships was myself. There was no particular reason why I couldn’t have created a compromise like going to school and making time for the person I was seeing or meeting in a Neutral space like Manhattan for guys that lived far. The hardest things to do in my life, was to take accountability that I was trying to be right about not finding any good men so I would exacerbate an excuse to the point where I would self-sabotage anything forming. The root cause behind this behavior was that I had trust, commitment and intimacy issues. If you were getting too close to really know me I would fall back on one of the excuses I mentioned above or make one up to validate leaving you. Resolving this took alot of soul searching, mentorship, conversations and most importantly showing up differently to obtain different results. I hope that a look into my head and life experiences open the space to see what excuses you may have been hiding behind that you can take ownership of while releazing the real issue and addressing it. Because everyone dseserves to be loved. Stay tuned for more “Just Head” PAGE

Dating on a Budget

Given my personal experiences and just whats going on with

my friends, I wouldn’t be completely off base to say that it isn’t uncommon for most people to be unbalanced financially.

Between the recession and trying to update your winter wardrobe almost every gay man’s wallet has taken a hit. Personally

some times I feel that dating is ridiculously expensive at times. Dinner and a movie and Starbucks afterwards can quickly

stack up and take your hard-earned paycheck down a few notches. Fancy nights out are incredible when you’re at that

step in dating where you are a committed to each other and you know you can stand to be around the person you’re with for a few hours.

First dates and the potentially subsequent second and third

dates are tricky. You’re still trying to feel the person out, to understand them and see if they maybe worth spending the rest of your life with ( if you think that far). It is a chance to see if you and the person are compatible, and no one wants to pay

$50 + dollars a date just to be reminded we would rather be

Go for a walk in the Park: Going for a walk in the park [dur-

the park sets the direction for how you’d like the dating to go.

During this time you can find out alot about a person and not have to spend a dime.

4. Bake Together: It really doesn’t matter what you bake, the

intention is for both of you to work together and have fun. Most baked goods are boxed and are relatively inexpensive.
