The Ski Jumpers

A Novel Peter Geye

A writer and former ski jumper facing a terminal diagnosis takes one more leap—into a past of soaring flights and broken family bonds

A brilliant ski jumper has to be fearless—Jon Bargaard remembers this well. His memories of daring leaps and risks might be the key to the book he’s always wanted to write: a novel about his family,

beginning with Pops, once a champion ski jumper himself, who also took Jon and his younger brother Anton to the heights. But Jon has never been able to get past the next, ruinous episode of their history, and now that he has received a terrible diagnosis, he’s afraid he never will.

In a bravura performance, Peter Geye follows Jon deep into the past he tried so

hard to leave behind, telling the story he spent his life escaping. Traveling back and forth in time, Jon tells his family’s story— perhaps his last chance to share it—to his beloved wife Ingrid, circling ever closer to the truth about those events and his own part in them, and revealing the perhaps unforgivable violence done to the brothers’ bond.

The dream of ski jumping haunts Jon as his tale unfolds, daring time to stop just long enough to stick the landing. Peter Geye’s gorgeous prose brings the broth ers to the precipice of their relationship,

where they have to choose: each other, or the secrets they’ve held so tightly for so long.

“If Geye is Minnesota’s Thoreau, then his Pond is a frozen lake. He writes so fetchingly of Minnesota in the winter time that the state’s tourism department should distribute his books.”

Troll Magic Hidden Folk from the Mountains and Forests of Norway Theodor Kittelsen | Translated by Tiina Nunnally

A collection of macabre and magical folklore from the “godfather” of the Norwegian troll

Artist Theodor Kittelsen (1857–1914) spins tales of wonder around creatures rumored to haunt the fields, forests, and waterfalls of Norway. These stories, in Tiina Nunnally’s nimble translation, reveal a Nordic world of wonder, myth, and magic as real as the imagination allows.

RECIPE: SPANISH POTATO OMELET

In Spain this is called a potato tortilla, and it is often served in little squares on the tapas table. We think it is also a tasty breakfast dish. It’s a great way to use leftover cooked potatoes. Serves 6.

● 6 large eggs

● 2 cups peeled and cooked potatoes, cut into 1/2-inch dice

● 1 small onion, finely chopped

● 1 green pepper, minced

● 12 green stuffed Spanish olives, sliced

● 1 teaspoon salt

● 1/4 pound cooked ham, cut into 1/2-inch cubes

1. Preheat the oven to 3500F. Coat a 9-inch round pie pan with cooking spray.

2. In a large bowl, beat the eggs until fluffy. Stir in the remaining ingredients and turn into the prepared pan.

3. Bake, uncovered, for 40 to 45 minutes until the center is set. Cut into wedges to serve.

In the early years, in my haste to plant certain crops, thinking earlier was always better, the emerg ing squash would many times be eaten to the ground by voracious cucumber beetles before the plants could even form their true leaves. Planting later resulted in more successful crops.

2 tablespoons basil pesto

1/2 cup chicken or vegetable broth

2 tablespoons pine nuts, slightly toasted

Strike!

Twenty Days in 1970 When Minneapolis Teachers Broke the Law

The complex and dramatic history of an illegal teachers’ strike that forever altered labor relations and Minnesota politics

This book recreates twenty days in April 1970 when a then-illegal strike by Minneapolis’s public school teachers marked a singular moment of cultural upheaval—and forever changed the city’s politics, labor law, educational climate, and the right to col lective bargaining.

by interviews, firsthand accounts, news reports, and written records, Strike! brings to life a pivotal moment not just for Minneapolis’s teachers but for the city, whose government, school system, and culture would change course for good.

History of a Home

Karen Fults Kaler

Built as a family home in 1922, Eastcliff, a twenty-room estate in St. Paul on the banks of the Mississippi River, has been the official residence for presidents of the University of Minne sota since 1961. Here are the Georgian colonial-style facade, the tennis court, and an early, do-it-yourself saltwater pool.

On the Wandering Paths Sylvain Tesson

Translated by Drew S. Burk | Foreword by Daniel Hornsby

Part literary adventure, part philosophical reflection on our contemporary consumer culture, On the Wandering Paths takes us deep into the heart of France’s “hyperrural” zones. Tracing the obscure paths peasants once followed throughout the countryside, the French writer Sylvain Tesson embarks on a three-month journey of solitude and personal contemplation in this meditation on the act of recovery. Les Chemins de Pierre, a film based on the book starring Jean Dujardin, is due to release in 2023.
