As a popular saying goes, “An artist is never paid for his labor but for his vision� Falling absolutely prey to these words today we are honored and certainly delighted to have amongst us an education maestro, an emerging force to be reckoned with in the grooming and hospitality industry and above all a social crusader and a thorough gentleman, Dr Sam Paul. Sam Paul started his journey with Sam Paul Educational Trust with a rich experience of more than 15 years in the field of education. The trust has promoted a number of educational institutions in and around Pondicherry namely, Dr. Pauls Engineering College, Christ College of Engineering and Technology, Stansford International School, Dr. Anbu Paul Group of Institutions, Paulsons Group of Institutions, Babitha Hotels P Ltd etc. They have over 15 Educational institutions which include engineering colleges, international schools, teacher education institutions, hotel management institutes and nursing colleges. Sam Paul has introduced various assorted international brands in the city of Chennai over the last few years. Below is a brief introduction of the few brands owned and operated by the Pauls Group. Throwing some light on his venture in the hospitality industry, here is one man with too many chips on his shoulder. He began with a franchise of a European bistro concept outlet that could cater to people of possibly all age groups, called Casa Picola in 2005, which has a tremendous client walk ratio per year. Providing thorough excellence in quality, food, management and ambience, Dr Sam branched out with one of its kind delivery restaurant called Dawn & Dusk that caters to 24hrs delivery of a variety of cuisines. The restaurant has become extensively popular with the late night city crowd since its opening. He has also taken the franchise of the world reknown Ponnusamy Chettinad Restaurant at Villipuram, Tamil Nadu. Ponnusamy is a landmark for authentic south Indian cuisine and also serves continental and Chinese cuisine. Ponnusamy runs 15 branches across the world including Singapore and Dubai. It has an infinite clientele with a massive recognition among Indian and tourists for its everlasting quality in food and service.

TONI&GUY launches a global trend collection every year directed by its Global Creative Director Sacha Mascolo-Tarbuck and created by the International Artistic Team, which takes inspiration from international fashion collections and popular culture in forecasting trends that implement the whole industry. TONI&GUY has long been renowned as an innovator within the hair industry, bridging the gap between high fashion and hairdressing. This is exemplified by the brand’s sponsorship of London Fashion Week and London Fashion Weekend, a partnership that began in September 2004. As the official sponsor of London Fashion Week, TONI&GUY creates the hair for over 80 designer catwalk shows each year, working with top designers including Giles Deacon, Todd Lynn, Jean-Pierre Braganza, Pam Hogg and Tata Naka.

Presently our group has been taken over by his son Dr.S.R.S Paul, M.E., Ph.D.,B.L.(simply known as Sam Paul) Mr.Sam Paul also successfully obtained the first master franchise of the world’s number one ice cream brand, Haagen-Dazs in Chennai which is not only one of its kind located in one of the most prime locations in Chennai but also provides dine-in facility. Located in the famous Khader Nawaz Khan Road, which boasts a parade of restaurants and world famous brands in Chennai. Chennai's a fast growing market for the food and beverage sector as we all know. Our city’s food and beverage industry has tremendously multiplied over the last decade. The Hospitality industry as we have come to understand is well understood and conquered by him. But his forte and a successful innings so far in the grooming industry is what brings him here today.

THE STAR OF THE FASHION INDUSTRY Toni Mascolo and brother Guy co-founded the first TONI&GUY salon in 1963 Clapham, London, joined by their two brothers Bruno and Anthony. By the 1980s the company had grown from a salon to hundreds in over 20 countries world-wide. Driven by their philosophy of pushing the boundaries of hairdressing and delivering creativity, quality and consistency to every client, Toni and Guy Mascolo were one of the first to begin the franchising boom, with the first franchised salon opening in Brighton in 1988. In 1997, Toni established the diffusion salon and beauty brand ‘essensuals’. Since launched, Toni has also branched out into other business industries including coffee shops, IT and financial services, as well as product ranges including label.m Professional Haircare, which in 2013 became the first Official Haircare Product of London Fashion Week. In October 2008 Toni Mascolo was awarded an honorary OBE for his phenomenal contribution to the industry, presented by the Culture Secretary Andy Burnham – an extremely prestigious accolade, demonstrating his overwhelming success in the business arena. In addition to this Toni was honoured by the Fellowship of British Hairdressers with a ‘Life time achievement Award’ 2013 was a busy year for awards for Toni: in March Toni and his wife Pauline Mascolo were honored with the award of Knight & Dame Commander of Saint Gregory from the Catholic church, the honour was bestowed personally by The Vatican City and Pope Benedict XVI, before his recent retirement. Whilst May saw Toni announced as ‘Honorary Professor for Durham University Business School and in October Toni being was awarded an AH + AIPP International Legend Award, jointly given by the Alternative Hair + the AIPP (Hairdressing Trade Press International Association – Association Internationale Presse Professionnelle Coiffure). Only one other person has received this award to date.

ESSENSUALS has evolved immensely since the company began in 1997 when Toni, Sacha and Christian Mascolo first recognised a gap in the market for a 'Diffusion line' of TONI&GUY. The idea behind a second Mascolo hair-salon group was the belief that a proportion of clients (especially the younger ones) can be 'transient' and visit the competition so why not be the competition? Originally targeting a younger market, it's price point was markedly less than TONI&GUY back then . . . think Armani/Emporio Armani. Fast forward to the present day and with 34 UK salons and 28 international salons, ESSENSUALS is well and truly on its way to achieving its goal of becoming a highly respected and globally recognised hairdressing brand. FRANCHISE PARTNER Franchisees are operational with a direct interface with the customer They execute the daily tasks according to the operational guidelines set out by the franchisors. “Franchisees concentrate on sales, exceptional customer service and execute the brand promise on ground level,� according to Paulsons Group. The franchisor provides an established, tried-and-tested business system, which includes an established brand name and trademark. The franchisor benefits from the franchisees’ financial and management investment in terms of network growth with minimal capital investment. In return the franchisor offers training and ongoing support services for a management service fee. Training is typically arranged for both franchisee and key staff members and may involve theoretical classroom as well as practical on-the-job training. An operations manual, marketing and advertising support and assistance in setting up are typically included in the franchise package. Most franchisors assist franchisees in site selection and provide guidelines on the purchase of inventory and equipment. Franchisors may assist with negotiating group insurance and assist in recruiting key staff, however, this is not always the case. Franchisors operating as nominated suppliers can be a tricky one. However, this is negated if the supply relationship is competitive, transparent at all times and acts in the best interest of the franchise network. Franchisees get a blueprint on how to succeed in the chosen business system when investing in a franchise, which really is a proven business system with the supporting business package and established brand. It is their responsibility to market the brand locally, follow the operating guidelines and use the support systems to attract and retain customers. Other responsibilities include maintaining the franchisors standards, methods, techniques and marketing strategies. Investing in a franchise does not negate the entrepreneurial responsibilities of the franchisee. The performance of the business remains the responsibility of the franchisee, with the comfort of being in business for yourself but not by yourself.
