A Morris family legacy of achievement and service. Siblings Naomi ’13 and Jordan Wente ’15 are second-generation Morris students, continuing a family legacy of cross-curricular achievement and passionate engagement with community service. Their parents, Lori ’88 and Mark Halverson-Wente ’87, professors at Rochester Community and Technical College in Rochester, Minnesota, trace their commitment

to civic involvement back to their years at Morris. They wanted similar experiences for their children and are pleased that they chose Morris over many other options. Naomi was the inaugural recipient of the John Brian Becker Memorial Student Activist Award as well as a 2012 Udall scholar. A former Morris Green Ambassador, she plans to pursue a career in food systems and food policy making. Jordan—a statistics, economics, and Spanish triple-major—is a 2014

Truman scholar. He plans to use the scholarship for graduate study at the Risø National Laboratory for Sustainable Energy in Roskilde, Denmark. As a member of Morris Jane Addams and founder of Estar in el Prairie, Jordan promotes intercultural perspectives on campus and in the community.

for Community Engagement as well as recognitions at the local, state, and national level, most notably by the U.S. State Department. At home and abroad, this is one family that understands how a renewable, sustainable education creates positive change in the world.

Students make tracks around the world. Molly Donovan ’14 traveled abroad twice during her four-year career at Morris. As a sophomore she lived in Spain, taking classes at the Centro de Lenguas Modernas in Granada and working at an animal sanctuary in Nerja. Molly also took a course in La Habana, Cuba during her senior year. Studying abroad sparked Molly’s love for the Spanish language, history, and travel. She even incorporated her experiences into her research. Like Molly, half of Morris students complete some form of international study—far beyond the national average of 15 percent. Study abroad experiences can prepare you for life in a globally connected world by enhancing your reasoning ability, interpersonal skills, and resourcefulness, providing a perspective that serves you for years to come.

Distinguished Morris professors nurture research abilities. At Morris, our professors focus on providing a high-quality undergraduate education. When you’re ready, they’re ready to provide one-on-one guidance through a major research or creative project. You don’t have to wait for grad school to get started.

been recognized for excellence in teaching. In fact, Morris has the highest percentage of Horace T. Morse alumni association award winners in the University of Minnesota system. They lead by example. Margaret Kuchenreuther, associate professor of biology, is one such example. She is the sole recipient of the 2012 University of

Minnesota Outstanding Community Service Award, which recognizes members of the University community who devote time and talent to improving public life. In the words of the nominating committee, Kuchenreuther is “a fully engaged citizen-scientist and a great champion of preservation and biodiversity in the prairie biodome.”

You can study directly with Margaret Kuchenreuther and other inspiring faculty members, because professors, not teaching assistants, teach at Morris. Since classes average only 16 students, professors have time to work with students individually. They know you by name and can help connect you with research opportunities, internships, and jobs.

While many of our grads go on to graduate or professional schools, other Morris alumni enter the work force directly, landing jobs and embarking on career paths that excite and engage them. A University of Minnesota, Morris education gives students a unique ability to mesh science and business, arts and communications, in ways that are insightful and intuitive. We see our alumni breaking new ground every year, in a wide range of entrepreneurial ventures.

Dr. Scott Hubers is a third-year resident at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee. Dr. Julie Fox is a thirdyear resident at the Duluth Family Medicine Residency Program. Dr. Katie Glasrud is a third-year emergency medicine resident at Regions Hospital in Saint Paul. Dr. Jeff Hubers is begining internal medicine residency at the University of Wisconsin, Madison. Dr. Ruth Olson Smith will practice family medicine at Naval Hospital Bremerton in Washington, and Dr. Shawn Olson is a third-year general surgery resident at University of North Dakota School of Medicine. “The importance of a liberal arts education for me personally was that I didn’t feel like I was educated in a silo.”
