MWPH hosts first feeding conference Sometimes success starts with simply seeing things differently — and sharing your expertise freely. When Mt. Washington

Pediatric Hospital hosted its first-ever Feeding Disorders Conference last year, interest was immediate. The event would also catapult the MWPH team into the national spotlight both in terms of media visibility as well as thought leadership within the field.

“Strategies for Treating Feeding Disorders: a Kaleidoscope of Ideas” was held in October 2015 at the Four Seasons Hotel in downtown Baltimore and drew 168 attendees from across the country and abroad. The two-day conference featured 24 presenters, 10 from the MWPH team.

Long recognized for its success working with children with a wide range of feeding disorders — which includes everything from what we call picky eating to infants who struggle to even swallow — MWPH’s inaugural conference on the disorder was designed to foster a better understanding of this condition. It’s estimated that anywhere from 20–50 percent of children suffer from a feeding disorder, more prevalent in children with developmental disabilities.

And, the MWPH team was publicly thanked for leading the way in improving knowledge and awareness at an event that included feeding programs across the country.

“To us, that was most gratifying,” says Katz. “My dream was to host a national conference about feeding disorders that was broader than all the others I’d been to. We started with

A year later, the Feeding Disorder Program has experienced an increase in patient referrals, requests for information and was spotlighted in 10 national and local news stories, including USA Today and The Wall Street Journal.

Bennett and Schwimmer can now be seen playing basketball together, walking the hallways and talking anywhere and everywhere – except a small office setting. The focus: helping Greg achieve his goals, in a way that works for him.

“My question to him,” says Schwimmer, is “What do you want out of life and how can I help you get it?”

So far, Greg’s interests include auditing college classes, volunteering at a local senior center and becoming an advocate for MLD research and awareness.

“When I told him I wanted to be in public speaking and get the word out to find a treatment that would help me and everyone with MLD, hopefully in my lifetime, Dr. Schwimmer

found that beading bracelets (initially as a fundraiser) has also halted the tremors his hands once showed. Two years post diagnosis, Greg is not confined to a wheelchair and his view is forward-focused.

“I’m still in a state of denial,” Bennett admits. But what the teen holds close to heart is that he knows not what tomorrow brings — or if he’ll even have one. So, he encourages those around him to seize each moment, to live in the present, to follow their dreams and to not miss an opportunity to let loved ones know they matter.

“I don’t focus on the end result,” says Greg. “I instead focus on happiness and the life I have been given and my faith in God. And I hope to inspire people to feel like they can do something greater than themselves.”

“I think his demeanor and passion and hope is contagious,” says Schwimmer. “I leave work feeling better after working with him. I know the lives he touches are better because of that.”

“First and foremost, I’m so thankful for what they did for my son,” says Williams, noting that so many patients have problems more medically complex and life-threatening than Ryder. “Seeing how hopeful these patients and families are and how much fight they have, it’s inspirational to us.”

And both say that they want to volunteer more, even while managing a busy household that now includes two healthy sons.

“Everyone is just amazing around here,” says Williams.

“We see the heart everyone here has and it’s amazing to connect with other families who are going through a hard time, too.”

INPATIENT SERVICES The Center For Neonatal Transitional Care (CNTC)* serves pre-term infants leaving the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) for a more medically stable environment to concentrate on feeding and growing. The program also provides comprehensive care for infants with pulmonary conditions and other complications of prematurity and neonatal abstinence syndrome.

Mt. Washington Pediatric Hospital is a place where children with complex medical conditions can get the integrated care they need.

We’re not like acute care hospitals that focus on emergent conditions; we’re a specialty hospital that helps children recover from illness and injury.

From quick outpatient visits to longer stays, we’re here to support children’s healing, to get them back home, back to school, and back to their lives.

MWPH’s multidisciplinary team, which is part of Johns Hopkins Medicine and the University of Maryland Medical System, works with both the child and the family to create a supportive and healing environment both here and at home.

Pediatric Chronic Illness Program* offers treatment for diabetes, HIV, severe feeding disorders, seizures, pulmonary rehabilitation and other chronic conditions.

Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Program helps children recover from traumatic injuries, illness or surgery, such as limb reconstruction following multiple fractures, post-surgical orthopaedic rehabilitation, management of burns or wounds, neurological disorders, spinal cord injury, amputation or brain injury.

DAY PROGRAMS Our Hospital Day Programs provide daytime treatment for children who require intensive interventions for rehabilitation or feeding needs and incorporate therapies and medical treatment with meals, educational services and other activities.
