Dear Friends, First and foremost, I hope everyone had a great spring and summer! The department was tremendously busy with the groundbreaking of the Maryland Proton Treatment Center (MPTC) in April, with over 550 people in attendance, an extremely successful Radiobiology and Physics Review Course, the arrival of Dr. Zeljko Vujaskovic and his team, and the relocation of our faculty and staff in Radiobiology and Finance. We are honored to announce that the University of Maryland Marlene and Stewart Greenebaum Cancer Center has been ranked #11 among 900 cancer centers nationwide in the U.S. News & World Report's 2012 "Top Hospitals in America" released last month. These rankings are a reflection of your hard work and dedication Zeljko Vujaskovic, MD, PhD started in early August as the Director of our newly created “Division of Translational Radiation Sciences” (DTRS). Please welcome Dr. Vujaskovic and his team to the Department. In addition to his role with DTRS, he will have a primary clinical focus in our genitourinary and prostate cancer programs. Please see page 24, for more information about Dr. Vujaskovic and DTRS. It was great seeing so many of you at the summer picnic in June. Thank you all for the last minute adjustment of location, due to the extremely destructive storm the evening before. It was a pleasure seeing you and your families as we enjoyed great food and a swim in the Cascade Lake. Every 5 years, we like to provide a comprehensive update and we hope you will join us for the next State of the Department address titled, “The Power of Partnerships, Passion and People, A 10 Year Review and a Glimpse into the Future” This presentation will take place on Friday, September 21st at 5:30. Please see more information on page 9. As we look forward, there is still a lot to do. Dr. Minesh Mehta will be joining us this fall as Medical Director of MPTC. We are recruiting for Dr. Courtney Bui’s replacement at CMRO and we will be recruiting for faculty and staff at Upper Chesapeake. What our patients are saying… In each edition of the BEAM we like to highlight a few of the comments from our patients and their families that express the sincere gratitude they feel towards our staff, and their overall patient-care experience. Dear Dr. Regine, As I sat down and started to think of all the reasons I was thankful for my mom, I realized that I had never thanked you for my mom. When we started on this journey of fighting, healing, courage, hope and faith, we never could have imagined the path, destination or outcome. I remember traveling with mom and Marisa around the country to try and find the “right” people to join her in her battle. She had to be in the right place, with the best equipment, and the best people. We met with the best and brightest in the country and yet I know when we met with you and your amazing staff that she had found her battleground for the fight of her life. Of course it didn’t hurt that you were Italian, Dr. Regine. As mom prepared for her extended stay in Baltimore, I never doubted that she had chosen her “warriors” well. I never doubted that she would beat this insidious disease that was trying to steal her amazing voice, her sharp tongue and her very life. When we met with everyone at all the other facilities, their first suggestions was a horrifying surgery to remove her tongue and voice box. I would watch as mom would shut-down, unable to bear hearing that suggestion yet again. Our journey brought us to the University of Maryland Medical Center. We were met by your amazing Jill R., and she walked us through the beautiful interior and down the stairs to Radiation Oncology. We met with your wonderful team and you, and I remember her coming in after you had examined her and she was smiling and said, “he’s Italian”. I knew then that she had made her decision– not because of you heritage, of course, but because she was so at ease, smiling and joking like “normal” mom. She felt at home and confident in her chance to beat her cancer with all of you. It was a relief to finally have a plan. I am eternally grateful for you all wrapping her in your arms and protecting and loving her for us. It made everything much easier on those of us who were not able to be there with her everyday. You not only help your patients but you help their families too. You help us to have piece of mind knowing that our loved ones are in the best possible hands. You give us hope that they will come home to us. You give us hope that even if things are never going to be the way they were again, at least we will have the chance to create a ‘new normal”. Be grateful that you are still alive, and figure out what your “new normal’ will be. So thank you again for my mom. I will be forever grateful and humbled for the gift of time you have given to us. Maryland Proton Treatment Center (MPTC) Construction Update We are all very excited about the work being done in the BioPark for the Maryland Proton Treatment Center. Some of us have had the opportunity to tour the grounds and see the progression. Starting in September, we are offering all of our faculty and staff the opportunity to tour the site. The first tour will be held September 27th at 5PM. You must RSVP to Jill Rosenberg by September 24th if you are interested in touring, in order to prepare the hard hats and construction vests. We will meet in the main waiting area in our department at 4:40 and will walk over together at 4:45PM. We will have more tour dates available soon if this date does not work for you. New Leadership Role In July, Dr. Steven Feigenberg started in the newly created leadership role as "Director of Emerging Technology". Dr. Feigenberg has demonstrated a commitment and passion for the evaluation and development of technology in his role as Director of our Stereotactic Radiation program. In this role, Dr. Feigenberg will work with senior departmental leadership to evaluate, communicate and introduce new technology in alignment with departmental clinical, research and educational missions. He will create and implement strategic and project work plans for new technology as well as anticipate and manage hurdles associated with the implementation of the new technology. In addition he will also develop metrics to evaluate effectiveness and appropriate utilization of new technology.

Leading Specialty Journal Publication Announcement The University of Maryland Department of Radiation Oncology had "six" publications featured in the April 2012 issue of our leading specialty journal, the International Journal of Radiation Oncology, Biology and Physics. Clinical Practice Guidelines Update: After more than 1 year of collaborative effort, our Clinical Practice Guidelines are essentially complete. We have now moved on to phase II, the clinical implementation of these guidelines. This implementation will be the theme of our clinical process retreat that will take place on November 27, 2012. Finalized guideline documents have been saved to both the Public Folder and the Document Library (located at the following links). Grant Approved Congratulations to Dr. Vujaskovic for receiving his first grant as faculty here in the Department of Radiation Oncology. Dr. Vujaskovic was approved by NASA Shared Services Center (NSSC) for a $200,000 grant to assume the role of lead Principle Investigator (PI) for his work on “Radioprotective Effects of Nanoceria on Neutron and Photon Induced Lung Damage”.
2012 Chicago Multidisciplinary Symposium in Thoracic Oncology We are pleased to announce that two of our residents presented at the 2012 Chicago Multidisciplinary Symposium in Thoracic Oncology. Dr. Nichols presented her study, “Marital Status is an Independent Predictor of Survival for Patients Undergoing Definitive Chemoradiation for Stage III Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer (NSCLC)”, which was highlighted during the press program. Dr. Nichols summarized her study for reporters in a News Briefing on Thursday, September 6, from 7:00 a.m. – 7:45 a.m. Central Time.
We would also like to congratulate Dr. Boggs on having his abstract titled: “Stereotactic Body Radiotherapy (SBRT) Using Tomotherapy for Early Stage NSCLC: The Utility of Mid-fraction CT Scans to Assess Intrafraction Tumor Motion”, selected for Poster Session at the 2012 Chicago Multidisciplinary Symposium in Thoracic Oncology. The meeting was held on September 6-8, 2012 at the Chicago Marriott Downtown Magnificent Mile in Chicago.

Baltimore Washington Medical Center Bell Ceremony On June 26, 2012, BWMC celebrated the installation of their “End of Treatment” bell. Elizabeth Nardone, a breast cancer patient of Dr. Oh’s, participated in this ceremony along with Karen Olscamp, President and CEO at BWMC and Dr. Regine. This bell has been very well received by the patients, their loved ones, and the faculty and staff.

Nicola Regine Teacher of the Year Award The Annual Nicola Regine Teacher of the Year Award was presented on June 22, 2012 to Dr. Karl Prado at the Annual Graduation Dinner. Dr. Prado was presented with a framed certificate from the residents, and his name will be added to the Nicola Regine Teacher of the Year plaque in the Nicola Regine Conference room. The Teacher of the Year Award was created to identify and recognize outstanding teachers and mentors of radiation oncology residents. Congratulations to Dr. Prado!

New Residents Please welcome our two new radiation oncology residents to the Department, Drs. Jolinta Lin and Alexander Engelman. Drs. Lin and Engelman started their residency with us on July 2nd. Dr. Lin graduated medical school from the University of Maryland School of Medicine and completed her PGY-1 training at Greater Baltimore Medical Center. Dr. Engelman graduated medical school from Georgetown University and completed his PGY-1 training at Georgetown University Hospital in Washington, DC. Both are very excited to be on board!

Medical Physics Residency Program Announcement Congratulations to Dr. Byong Yong Yi as he assumes the role of Director of the Medical Physics Residency training program. Dr. Yi has clearly demonstrated a commitment and passion for the education of our trainees. He assumes this leadership position as we navigate our newly created residency program through its accreditation process. In his role, Dr. Yi will be working with many of you and our program leaders to ensure success for our Residency program. Please congratulate Dr. Yi in this new leadership role serving our Educational Mission.
First Radiation Oncology Medical Physics Resident Please welcome our first radiation oncology medical physics resident to the Department, Dr. Xiaocheng Yang. Dr. Yang started his residency in medical physics residency program on July 2nd. Dr. Yang graduated with a PhD from West Virginia University and most recently completed a postdoctoral fellowship in our Department under the supervision of Drs. Byong Yong Yi and Cedric Yu. Dr. Yang is very excited to be the first medical physics resident in the newly created medical physics residency program. Dr. Yang will be training in the medical physics resident program for the next two years.
New Chief Resident Please join us in congratulating Dr. Michael Rutenberg on being appointed chief resident for the academic year 2012-2013. Dr. Rutenberg officially took over this role on July 1, 2012 and will undoubtedly continue to foster the tradition of excellence that embodies our residency program.
Drs. Wendy Citron and Navesh Sharma would like to thank Dr. Liz Nichols for her outstanding leadership as chief resident this year. She has been instrumental in helping implement several constructive changes in the educational program and has led by example.

2012 Radiation Oncology Research Scholarship Award The Department of Radiation Oncology, via an Endowment Fund for Academic Excellence in Radiation Oncology, recently announced a scholarship opportunity to be awarded to one medical student who has successfully completed a research project during their 2nd year, 3rd year and/or 1st semester of their 4th year. This year, the recipient of the 2011 Radiation Oncology Research Scholarship Award is Musaddiq J. Awan, 2012 graduate of the University of Maryland School of Medicine. Dr. Awan’s winning project was titled, “Can Breast MRI Select Patients For Treatment With Pre-operative APBI?” Dr. Awan worked on this project under the supervision of Dr. Steven Feigenberg. This project will be presented at this year’s ASTRO meeting in Boston, MA as a poster presentation. Dr. Awan received a $2,500 scholarship, which will go towards his medical school tuition.
2012 Radiation Oncology Summer Fellowship Award The Department of Radiation Oncology, via and Endowment Fund for Academic Excellence in Radiation Oncology, is pleased to offer the Radiation Oncology Summer Fellowship Award. The fellowship program provides either a mentored research practicum in radiobiology or a clinical research project in medical (clinical) physics or clinical radiation oncology. This year, the recipient of the 2012 Radiation Oncology Summer Fellowship Award is Duc Nguyen, 1st year Medical Student at the University of Maryland School of Medicine. Mr. Nguyen has been spending the summer working on a project titled, “Investigation of Low Dose Fractionated Radiation Therapy as a Chemopotentiator in Advanced GI Carcinoma” under the supervision of Drs. Navesh Sharma and France Carrier in the Radiobiology Lab. Mr. Nguyen received a $2,500 stipend, and presented his work at this years Student Research Forum.

Introducing our newest Division It is official as of August 2012 – The department has a new division: “The Division of Translational Radiation Sciences (DTRS)” – under the direction of Dr. Zeljko Vujaskovic. We are pleased to announce that everyone on the 7th floor of the Bressler Building has moved to the 8th floor. There is currently 8,000 sq. ft. of new lab space undergoing renovation in association with DTRS. There will be an official “open house” planned for this coming spring once it is complete. Dr. Chen comes to us from the University of Nebraska Medical Center, in Omaha, N.E., and he completed his Post-Graduate clinical training at Duke University Medical Center in Durham, N.C.
Update on the Development of Tumor Response Models In collaborating with Dr. Wei Lu and Dr. Warren D'Souza, Dr. Hao Zhang developed tumor response models using quantitative spatial-temporal FDG-PET features to accurately and precisely predict pathologic response to concurrent chemo-radiotherapy (CRT) for locally advanced esophageal cancer patients. By using quantitative PET/CT image features they were able to accurately and precisely predict pathologic tumor response in esophageal cancer patients undergoing concurrent CRT. This prediction has the potential to alter current clinical practice standards by identifying patients in whom surgery may be safely deferred. Congratulations for your efforts and continued dedication. Research Grant Approval The University of Maryland, College Park (UMD) and Baltimore (UMB) campuses have recently been awarded a $75K grant to a research team led by Dr. Mistry (Rad Onc, UMB) and Dr. Varshney (Comp Science, UMCP) to improve the reliability of diagnosing aggressive prostate cancer. The intent of this new initiative is to promote the structured collaboration between UMD and UMB and to advance the institutions’ joint goals in research and innovation by fostering creative teams of investigators working across disciplinary boundaries and campuses. The team comprises of physicists, physicians and scientists from Radiation Oncology, Radiology, and Urology from UMB and computer scientists from UMCP. The researchers are developing technology to pinpoint the exact location of suspected aggressive cancerous tissue using magnetic resonance imaging and advanced machine learning tools. By laying the groundwork for positively identifying cancer foci, the findings from this proposal have the potential to alter the paradigm for prostate screening and patient management.

Graduation Update Kate Malinowski, advised by Warren D’Souza, PhD, has graduated with her PhD from the Fischell Department of Bioengineering at the University of Maryland College Park. Dr. Malinowski has accepted a position with Varian Medical Systems, in Clinical Research Collaboration Management, in Seattle.

Awards and Recognition The Physics Department is pleased to announce that after presenting our work entitled: “Modeling Pathologic Response of Locally Advanced Esophageal Cancer to Chemoradiotherapy Using Spatial-Temporal FDG-PET Features, Clinical Parameters and Demographics”, at this year's AAPM annual meeting, that we received an award for "Best In Physics", which was awarded to the top 5 abstracts in each of the three categories: Imaging, Therapy and Joint Imaging and Therapy. In addition, this years presentation was selected to the Science Council Research Symposium and was presented by our newest faculty, Hao Zhang, Ph.D. Presentations in this session included the top 10 proffered abstracts from the entire meeting. Later Dr. Zhang's presentation was featured in MedicalPhysicsWeb (http:/medicalphysicsweb.org/cws/article/opinion/50480) and the Society of Nuclear Medicine and Molecular Imaging (SNMMI) SmartBrief.

Successful RTOG Audit We would like to congratulate all of the members of our research team for the completion of a very successful RTOG audit. We have been granted an acceptable audit with a three year review process. Clearly, the effort that was put in over the last few months in preparation for this audit was well worth it and the entire team should be recognized. At the exit interview, the auditor went out of her way to complement the group on the excellent care of our patients and their respective treatment charts, especially given the volume of patients that are treated at all sites including our community practices at CMRO and BWMC which accrue significantly to our clinical research program. Please join us in thanking the research team for their extraordinary efforts as we continue to focus our department on the critical role of clinical research. Clinical Trials: The January-August 2012 active study accruals are: 32 RTOG patients (33 case credits) and 16 UMGCC patients. Total of 48 patients accrued to clinical trials in the department of Radiation Oncology.
The following RTOG/GCC studies have been recently IRB approved and are now open to accrual: GCC 1043 IS NOW OPEN TO ACCRUAL Magnetic Resonance Imaging for Evaluating Tumor and Node Response and Normal Tissue Function to Concurrent Chemotherapy and Radiation Therapy in Head and Neck Cancer. Primary Objective- To assess whether advanced MR imaging techniques can be used to determine tumor and node response (i) 4-5 weeks following initiation of concurrent chemoRT and (ii) after completion of chemoRT in head and neck cancer by comparing the change in parameters associated with MR images at the appropriate time point relative to the respective baseline parameters (prior to therapy) with the physical exam and PET imaging (that are performed as standard of care) performed at 3-4 months following the completion of therapy. RTOG 1021 IS NOW OPEN TO ACCRUAL A Randomized Phase III Study of Sublobar Resection (+/- Brachytherapy) versus Stereotactic Body Radiation Therapy in High Risk Patients with Stage I Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer (NSCLC)- This is a joint trial conducted by the Radiation Therapy Oncology Group (RTOG) and the American College of Surgeons Oncology Group (ACOSOG). Primary Objective: To ascertain whether patients treated by SBRT have a 3-year overall survival rate that is no more than 10% less than patients treated with sublobar resection RTOG 1114 IS NOW OPEN TO ACCRUAL Phase II Randomized Study of Rituximab, Methotrexate, Procarbazine, Vincristine, and Cytarabine With and Without Low-Dose Whole-Brain Radiotherapy for Primary Central Nervous System Lymphoma Primary Objective: To determine median progression-free survival (PFS) in both arms on an intent-to-treat basis. PFS will be defined as the interval from randomization to progression or death, whichever occurs first.

Flu Season Update Flu Season 2012 is expected to start the first week October. Vaccination is Mandatory. You will be able to review flu health screening forms and vaccine information statements (VIS) before receiving the vaccine. If you are unable to accept the flu vaccine, you can decline vaccination for one of three reasons: allergy to vaccination, religious reasons, or if you received the vaccination at another location. All three reasons require proof or explanation. Allergies require documentation from a healthcare provider stating the employee is allergic to chemical properties of the flu vaccine. If you had a flu shot else where, you must have documented proof. For religious objections, staff members will be asked to provide a document from their clergy stating the contraindication to their religious doctrine.

On 5/22/12 the governor of Maryland signed legislation that increases the state income tax rates, retroactive to January 2012. The individuals impacted are single filers with earnings of $100,000 or more and joint filers with earnings over $150,000. The highest tax rate, as well as the supplemental wage rate, increased from 5.5% to 5.75%. Although the state has issued new withholding tables that are to be used for the remainder of the year, EMPLOYERS HAVE NOT BEEN REQUIRED to make any adjustments to the withholding amounts deducted prior to the withholding tables availability. Employees may want to review their tax bills from last year and submit a new Maryland Exemption Certificate, Form MW507 with additional withholdings to be deducted for the remainder of the year. The State of Maryland has stated penalties and interest will not be assessed on 2012 income tax form underpayments, but you may find yourself with a much smaller refund or owe taxes with your 2012 income tax filing if you don’t review and make an adjustment.

Updates: BWMC closed this fiscal year with the highest volumes on record and we exceeded our RVU budget by 28.5%! In addition, our average patient satisfaction score for the fiscal year was 94.1% which means that 94.1% of the patients surveyed scored us as a 9 or 10 on a scale of 10. This is an outstanding accomplishment! BWMC went live on EPIC on Sunday, August 12 at midnight. Radiation Oncology is currently utilizing EPIC for order entry and e-prescribing only. However, we will be able to view inpatient information as well.
Recent Promotion Kennecia Shaw was promoted to the position of Front Office Supervisor and is now responsible for overseeing the front office staff and all front office operations.

Farewell Angelique Davis Taylor, assistant chief therapist would like everyone in the department to know “Honestly, there aren't any words to sum up how I feel about each of you and the time we've spent together. All I can say is thank you for welcoming me into your group. This has been one of the best work experiences ever and I will miss everyone at CMRO and the University!� We have also enjoyed her presence and the professionalism. Angelique left with a heavy heart, but family needs called her away.
Dr. Courtney Bui will be joining the faculty of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, her medical school alma mater, in September. Her last day at CMRO will be 9/14/12. She will be working with the Rex Health Care system in Raleigh, NC, which is the largest provider of cancer services in the area. She will be moving closer to her family, so her children, Ian, Audrey, and Ava can spend more time with their grandparents, aunts, uncles and numerous cousins!
Ozana Jovanovich, our patient care technician, who cared for all, including the staff, has moved on to return to her home country. Ozana will be missed by all.

Clement B. T. Knight, M.D., MRCP, MRCPath August 2, 1950 – August 9, 2012 It is with great sadness that we acknowledge the death of a tremendous clinician, colleague, mentor and friend; Clement B. T. Knight, M.D. Clem joined Maryland Hematology Oncology, the medical oncology practice that "shares a back hall� with CMRO, in 1993. He practiced medicine the way he lived his life; with curiosity, energy, dedication and joy. If a clinical situation puzzled him, he would elicit opinions up and down the back hall, within the building, across the country, and across the oceans. His patients understood his concern for them and cherished him for it. He had a great sense of humor and an infectious giggle. He kept a beautiful garden and enjoyed fishing and motorcycling. He adored his wife, Mattie, and was very proud of his son and daughter, Jonathan and Nicki, and his 10 month old 28 pound grandson, Sebastian. He is also survived by his mother, two brothers and a sister. Clem was a large man, literally and figuratively, and you always knew when he was in the building, but the real measure of this great man was the depth of his principles and his integrity. He strove relentlessly for intellectual rigor and to do what was right. Clem loved his work, his hobbies, his patients, his friends and his family. His was a life well-lived. We will miss dear Clem, but we will be ever thankful that we knew him.
