SETTING YOUR COURSE Thank you for your interest in the School of Journalism & Mass Communication. At our state-of-the-art school, you will not only prepare yourself for a career in journalism or strategic communication, but you’ll get a first-rate education, study with awardwinning faculty, become involved in the Twin Cities media community and gain real-life experience from industry professionals. SJMC is home to more than 1,000 undergraduate students Seven student organizations offer unlimited opportunities for those interested in broadcasting, professional journalism, advertising and public relations Mentoring program pairs students with professionals from the Twin Cities media community Ideally located in the Twin Cities, a thriving media market with two daily newspapers, nine TV channels, 29 radio stations, 300 advertising agencies and 100 public relations firms



SJMC OFFERS THREE TRACKS OF STUDY: Professional Journalism: Become a newspaper reporter, magazine writer, editor, TV news anchor, photojournalist, broadcast producer or web designer. Strategic Communication: Become a public relations specialist, go into advertising or do community relations. Mass Communication: Be prepared for graduate school, work in media management or at nonprofits.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT ADMISSION TO SJMC

Once you are a University of Minnesota student in the College of Liberal Arts, you submit an application into the major. Most do this after completing 30 credits. Before acceptance, students must complete JOUR 1001: Introduction to Mass Communication with a ‘C’ or better. Those interested in applying must attend a Premajor Meeting.
