OUR PROGRAM THE GRADUATE CERTIFICATE IN CREATIVE PRACTICE places emphasis on the student’s individual studio research and strengths and offers advanced training and mentorship in the visual arts and design. Additionally, it provides professional development opportunities to art educators, working artists, and adult learners who are looking to pivot into a visual arts or design-based careers. Through creative inquiry, research, and practice, students in the Graduate Certificate in Creative Practice program will have the opportunity to explore interdisciplinary approaches to art and design, as well as practical and legal issues faced by independent artists; grant and residency applications; and career opportunities in galleries, museums, and higher education.

COURSES AR 501: INTERDISCIPLINARY SEMINAR I The first course in a series of directed graduate seminars with consideration of students’ professional goals and preferred mediums with a stated goal or objective. A course with flexibility in which graduate art students pursue a professional level of work, foster research, and establish creative processes and methodologies. Three credit hours. AR 502: STUDIO INTENSIVE I The first course of a series of studio-focused workshops with an emphasis on one-on-one directed instruction that is designed to build students’ portfolios around stated goals and objectives. Studio intensives offer in-depth discussions, professional mentorships, and experiential learning opportunities to graduate art students. Three credit hours. AR 550: PROFESSIONAL PRACTICES Prepares graduate students for the practical and legal issues faced by independent artists; grant and residency applications; and career opportunities in galleries, museums, and higher education. Three credit hours. AR 601: Interdisciplinary Seminar II The second course of a series of directed graduate seminars with consideration of students’ professional goals and preferred mediums with a stated goal or objective. A course with flexibility in which graduate art students pursue a professional level of work, foster research, and establish creative processes and methodologies. Pre-requisite: AR 501. Three credit hours.


AR 602: STUDIO INTENSIVE II The second course of a series of studio-focused workshops with an emphasis on one-on-one directed instruction that is designed to build students’ portfolios around stated goals and objectives. Studio intensives offer in-depth discussions, professional mentorships, and experiential learning opportunities to graduate art students. Prerequisite: AR 502. Three credit hours. AR 650: CAPSTONE PROJECT This independent project of creative visual work aims to involve students in the professional considerations of research and making artwork intended for exhibition. It constitutes a capstone body of work intended to showcase the student’s mastery of skills and personal vision. PreRequisite: Must have completed 9 hours of graduate course requirements. Three credit hours.

ADMISSION

REQUIREMENTS •

A bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution of higher education in a related field (visual arts or design) or in an un-related field with professional experience in visual arts and/or design or an exemplary portfolio of self-directed work.

Submit official transcript(s) from each institution attended, showing all credits previously earned and degrees posted.

Have earned a 3.0 cumulative GPA on a previous undergraduate or graduate degree.

Submit University of Mobile Graduate Admissions Application and non-refundable application fee.*

A 300-to 800-word statement describing the reasons and goals behind the applicant’s interest in graduate study and the direction of intended research.

A portfolio documenting an original body of creative visual work that demonstrates technical acuity, creativity, and a clear conceptual direction for potential graduate level research presented in an appropriate digital format (pdf is preferred for still images). 8-10 individual works recommended.

*Alumni of the University of Mobile who earned a Bachelor’s degree should complete a new application for the graduate certificate, not the readmit application.
