What is Dementia? As we get older, we may experience minor changes in our cognition and memory. Dementia is a decline in cognition that is not normal aging. It is a disease process that progresses and interferes with daily life. The most common cause of dementia is Alzheimer’s disease, but there are a number of other illnesses that can lead to significant impairment. To be able to differentiate normal aging from these disease processes, it is important to undergo memory and cognitive assessment from a health care provider.
