Athletic Hall of Fame Inductees Biographies

C

hris Massey graduated from UMS-Wright in 1993 where he was an all-around athlete playing football, baseball, and basketball and was a member of the track and field team. Massey began playing varsity football as a freshman and earned a letter all four years. As a tailback and a middle linebacker, he was the leading rusher with 522 yards and tackler with 91 tackles. His senior year, he was named Kiwanis Player of the Week. He was also a member of the 1991 Outdoor Track and Field State Championship Team and was runner-up in Pole Vault at the state meet. Massey was a key player on the 1993 Baseball State Championship Team playing center field and scoring 47 runs that year. For his outstanding senior season, he was named to Mobile Press Register’s Super 25, All-Area, All-County, and All-Region. Massey was invited to and played in the Lion’s Club All-Star game. He was recruited to play both football and baseball in college. Massey continued his education and baseball career at the University of South Alabama where he received a Bachelor of Arts in English. He was a two-year letter winner on the Jaguars 1995 and 1996 baseball teams playing pinch hitter, center fielder, and right fielder under former UMS Coach Steve Kittrell. He began working for CPSI in 2002 and now works for its subsidiary, Trubridge, where he serves as the Director of Operations. He lives in Mobile with his wife, Dana, and children, Dixon and Benjamin, who are in fourth and first grade at UMS-Wright. He enjoys coaching his boys in football and baseball.

B

rett Boutwell graduated from UMS-Wright in 1998 and played football and baseball. He was the starting quarterback and led the 1996 football team to the state finals placing runnerup. He received All-State honorable mention for his performance. He was also named Team Captain and Best Offensive Player his senior year. This All-State pitcher began playing varsity baseball in the 9th grade and earned four varsity letters. He helped his team win the 1995 and 1997 Baseball State Championships. He is in the top ten in the UMS-Wright baseball record book for complete games, innings pitched, games pitched, wins, and strikeouts. He was a recipient of the R.E. Hanks Award, the James “Red” Leachman Award, and the Gary Willard Memorial Award. He continued his baseball career at Southern Union Community College finishing with two conference tournament runner-up finishes in 2000 and 2001. Boutwell began his coaching career in 2001 at the University of West Alabama coaching outfielders in baseball. As a student assistant, he coached two All-Gulf South Conference Players. He graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in History Education. Boutwell returned to UMS-Wright in 2003 to teach, coach freshman football, and take over junior varsity baseball coaching duties. He was a varsity assistant football coach and was a part of the 2005 and 2008 State Championship Football seasons. He was named the 2013 ALFCA Assistant Coach of the Year. As the head baseball coach, he earned two baseball championship titles at UMS-Wright in 2010 and 2011 and was named Coach of the Year by the Alabama Baseball Coaches Association both years. In his tenure at UMS-Wright, the Bulldog Baseball Team won-loss record was 196-82 with four Region Championship titles, two AHSAA semi-final appearances, and back-to-back 4A State Championship titles. After the 2014 season, Boutwell accepted a position as the Head Baseball Coach for Saraland High School where he would also assist coaching football. He has led the Spartans Baseball Team to an 80-39 record over the last three seasons, and has won 3 area titles. He and his wife, Amy, have a daughter, Emma Grace, and a son, Clete. He volunteers for the Saraland Lions Club and at the local youth park coaching.


M

att Lomax graduated from UMS-Wright in 1999 excelling in football. He played left tackle and was ranked as one of the nation’s top offensive lineman. This Parade AllAmerican was two-time All-State and was asked to play in the Alabama-Mississippi High School All-Star Game. He was named Birmingham News Super All-State, Tampa Tribune National Top 100, Prep Star Dream Team, Atlanta Journal Southern Top 100, BHP Ten Most Wanted, USA Today All-American, Pigskin Preps Super South 75, Forrest Davis All-South, Super Prep AllAmerican, and Prep Star All-American. Also, the Tuscaloosa News named him to their Sweet 16 list of high school football players. He was awarded the Bulldog Award, the Captain’s Award, and the Smokehouse Award at the University of Michigan lineman camp. Lomax signed a scholarship to play for the University of Alabama. While at the University of Alabama, Lomax lettered in football playing on the offensive line. He received academic All-SEC honors and graduated a Bachelors of Arts in Marketing and a Masters of Arts in Marketing Research. He has held an active Home Builders License with the State of Alabama since 2008 and is now the Chief Operating Officer for Truland Homes. He enjoys spending time with his wife, Emily, and children, Brooks and Olivia. He and his family are members of St. Mary Catholic Church in Mobile.

S

amantha Zimmerman Poeth graduated from UMS-Wright in 2005. She got involved with weightlifting while in high school. At the time, she was participating in volleyball as well as track and field, while in her senior year she competed in the shot put, discus, long jump, and triple jump. She was a member of the 2002, 2003, 2004, and 2005 Track and Field State Championship Teams. She placed individually in shot put three years in a row and was named AllState and All-County as well. Her senior year, she set the state record in shot put after setting a state record in javelin as a sophomore. For her accomplishments, she was a awarded the Arlene Jones Award, the Miller Top Dog Award, and the Lisa Savell Drew Award. Poeth continued her education at the University of South Alabama where she received a Bachelors and a Masters in Exercise Science. While getting her masters, she was a graduate assistant. Poeth has been competing in Olympic-style weightlifiting for 14 years since her interest in high school. She has lifted in one youth national championship, three junior national championships, four collegiate national championships, and 12 senior national championships. She is a 7-time National Champion in Olympic Weightlifting and has represented Team USA eight times. She had a chance to lift in the Olympic Team Trials in 2012. She is a collegiate American record holder in the Snatch with 200 lbs and the Clean and Jerk with 257 lbs. She resides in Northport, AL with her husband, Jason in the Brown House Community. The community offers tutoring and a community library that helps the students advance their reading skills, and it also has an athletic program that works to teach the kids proper form in weightlifting and how to participate in team sports. She is the Head Coach at Orange Theory Fitness, the owner of Kilo Gear, and a contributing author for Barbend.


B

randon Gibson graduated from UMS-Wright in 2007 where he lettered in football, basketball, and track. As a the most valuable wide receiver, Gibson helped lead the 2005 Football Team to a State Championship and was named Permanent Team Captain. He was named All-State his junior and senior year. In 2006, he was named one of four Crichton Optimist Club Players of the Year, a member of the Mobile Press Register’s Elite 18, and a member of the Birmingham News’ All-State team. He played in the Alabama-Mississippi All-Star game. As a track and field athlete, Gibson won two State Championships in 2005 and 2006, as well as individual state titles in the triple jump, 400M and 800M, and long jump. He set the state and school record in the 400M dash in 2006. He was named All-State and received the Galle Top Dog Award and the Hope Award. For his athletic abilities, this all-around athlete was a recipient of the R.E. Hanks Award. Gibson continued his athletic career and education at the University of Alabama, where he lettered in football playing wide receiver and special teams. He was awarded the Special Teams Award and the Crompton Award. Gibson played in the 2011 BCS game where the Crimson Tide won the National Championship and was a member of the 2009 SEC Championship Team as well. He graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Public Relations and a Masters of Science in Sports Management. Gibson, is currently living in Tuscaloosa, where he is the Area Director at N2 Publishing.

D

on Jennings is a graduate of Vigor High School and the University of Southern Mississippi where he received a Bachelor of Science and a Masters of Science in Physical Education. He played track and basketball. He was also a wide receiver for the Mobile Tarpons minor league football team. Jennings was a high school football coach for 49 years. He coached at Satsuma, Davidson, Fairhope, Robertsdale, and Murphy before joining the UMS-Wright coaching staff in 1999 as the Linebacker Coach and the Defensive Coordinator. During his 17 seasons at UMSWright, he was a part of five State Championship Teams and all 17 years they reached the playoffs. He received the 2007 5A Assistant Coach of the Year Award from the ALFCA and the 2008 Lefty Anderson Service Through Coaching Award sponsored by L’A rche Mobile. He is a member of the Fairhope High School Athletic Hall of Fame and the Baldwin County Coaches Association Hall of Fame. He retired from UMS-Wright at the end of the 2015 football season. Jennings and his wife, Margaret, live in Malbis where he serves as a Deacon at Fairhope Christian Church. They have two sons, David and Dan. David is a scout with the Baltimore Orioles, and Dan is the Assistant General Manager of the Washington Nationals.
