Russell Goodloe, Thomas Barnett, Samuel Plash, and Danner Butler are National Merit Semifinalists and will now have the opportunity to advance in the competition for National Merit Scholarships valued in excess of $32 million dollars. In addition to the semifinalists, Christian Cooper, Hannah Fridriksson, Joe Horn, Paul Pluscht, and Thomas Woodford are recognized as National Merit Commended Scholars. Congratulations!

Students Around Campus
Mrs. Chavez’s Foreign Language classes constructed and flew these beautiful “Día de Muertos” kites. “Dia de Muertos” is celebrated throughout Mexico as a way to honor loved ones!

YELLOW DAY Yellow Day was a school wide celebration in September for Childhood Cancer Awareness month. Throughout the week, students decorated signs for carpool, wrote inspirational messages on the sidewalks, and concentrated on displaying random acts of kindness to those around them.

The UMS-Wright Art Guild is reaching across the world via visual art in a cultural exchange program to help needy children in Isolo, Kenya. The students hosted a preview of the Kenyan students’ art before it was sold at a silent auction with all proceeds going directly to Pepo La Tumaini School

Awards and Recognitions
Mr. Napp’s Engineering Class won FAN FAVORITE in One Mobile’s Food Fight Build-Off! On top of winning, they also contributed over 1,100 cans to the Bay Area Food Bank!
The Robotics team competed in their first competition on October 29th and made it to the semifinals as one of the top 8 highest scoring robots and earned the honor of being the BEST rookie team of the year! 2016 BEST Robotics Team Members: John Boyd, Max Buchman, Ebb Counts, Clayton Davis, William Denson, Creighton Fowler, J.J. Gutiérrez, Ty Haffner, Mary Elizabeth Howze, Cole Kittrell, Justin Littlefield, Chaney Scott McCorquodale, Alex Moore, Parks Moore, Paul Murray, Ethan Palacio, Caroline Travers, and Rohan Wallace.
The following 4th graders were chosen based on good citizenship to participate in the Veterans Day Celebration at Battleship Park - Jackson Smith, Charlie Jeffery, Caroline Outlaw and Josie Jaye.
Dalton Goff (OLB) and Thomas Woodford (OL) won the Optimist Club’s Players of the Week for their performances against St. Paul’s!
Congratulations to 6th graders, Elizabeth Elliott, Braxton Bonner, and Paul Murray for winning the BREAKOUT UMS-Wright contest and cracking the codes in 3 minutes!
The Swain sisters, Elizabeth ‘18, Brooke ‘19, Abigail ‘22, and Grace ‘24 were honored as Red Ribbon Service Leaders by the Drug Education Council.
Middle School Principal, Wes Lathan, presented the 5th grade with their cross country trophy!
Mrs. Delaney and the UMS-Wright Theatre Guild earned 10 Individual Event Superior Ratings and 3 Individual Event Excellent Ratings at the District Trumbauer Festival! Also, we had one play advance to state out of 6 from our district!

The 2016 College Campus tour was a huge success! This group toured 12 campuses in just 4 days!
Students Out and About
Members of the basketball team went to support former teammate Ashley Scott ‘16.
The Bulldogs won the Battle of Old Shell Road 28-7 for the second year in a row!
While at Camp Grace, the 8th grade students constructed 25 benches, 11 Adirondack chairs, 20 shooting houses, 50 corn hole games, and also conquered an intense ropes course! They collectively donated $3,500 to Camp Smile and $3,500 to Camp Rap-a-Hope.
Inspiration to our Students
Mrs. Gordon’s 6th graders wrote letters of encouragement to one of her dear friends and his special operations unit in Kabul.
We love any reason to have our greats and grands on campus! Thank you for coming to the 1st annual “Books and Brownies!” Chandler Taylor with grandparents Johnny and Johniece DuPree.
Motivational speaker, Travis Crim, delivered an explosive and inspiring message that captured the attention of every student in the auditorium! Thank you, Travis, for teaching our students that being comfortable in your own skin is cool!
On October 20th, our students had the privilege of hearing four incredible alumni speak during the Words of Wisdom assembly. Win Hallett ‘63, Marietta Murray Urquhart ‘73, Margaret Cooper Biggs ‘94, and William Terry ‘00 are truly inspirational leaders in the community and we are so honored to call them UMS-Wright alums!

A gift was made in Memory of Dr. Douglas Tappan ‘67 by Diane Tappan Horst ‘62 and her husband J.B. Horst. Dr. Tappan, an orthopedic surgeon in Pensacola, FL, passed away in April of 2015.15.
