The Class of 2013 was accepted to 91 different colleges and universities both nationally and internationally, and they chose to attend 36 different institutions. Notably, they attended schools to which we have not sent students in some time, including Howard, Dartmouth, UC-San Diego, University of Washington, Furman, Belmont, and UPenn and set a record for earning scholarship awards! 86.5% of the class (83 of 96) received a merit scholarship award, accumulating over $9.7 million in scholarship awards. Congratulations to our newest graduates!

Students Around Campus Middle School students, Gracie Hunt, Ellen Ray Chitty and Greer Lauber, qualified to go to the Varsity

level State

track meet and the team won the title for Class 4A.

Music camp was held the week after school was out.

The theme for this year’s camp was Down on the Farm. All of the songs and the instruments and crafts that the children made were inspired by the Down on the Farm theme.

The Life and Times of Mark

During fourth quarter Mrs. Runshang’s 7th

grade Language Arts Research classes joined forces with Mrs. Smilie’s 7th

grade English classes to explore the life and times of Mark Twain while they were reading The Adventures of Tom Sawyer. Some students chose to create multimedia presentations while others chose to build a riverboat or a replica of the fictional town of St. Petersburg, Missouri, where Tom Sawyer took place. Several students chose to apply modern technology to the 1850s and created a Facebook page for Tom Sawyer. All of these projects were researched and presented to the classes during the last week of school. Pictured: Bottom Right: Kaitlyn Read and Lydia Fantoni. Top Right: Taylor Allen and Kierra Giles.

Students Around Town

Dauphin Island...Our K5, Third,

and 7th Grade classes all took field trips to learn, explore, and have fun.

7th Grade

Parker Bowden, K5

7th grade science classes completed their annual Dauphin Island Field Trip. Students rotated through three different sites on the island. Students took a 1.5 hour cruise on a shrimp boat and trolled in the Mississippi Sound. The students were able to identify and learn about the organisms that they caught in the nets. Upon their return, the students had a great time feeding the sea birds and dolphins with their catch. Students also toured the estuarium at the sea lab and learned about our local estuaries, fishing, conservation, and about many types of vertebrates and invertebrates that are found in our local waters. This year they were able to also visit the new sting ray exhibit that allows students to touch and feed the different variety of sting rays in the enclosure. Finally, they visited Fort Gaines and learned interesting facts about living conditions at the fort, watched a blacksmith demonstration, and learned about the important role of the Fort during the civil war.

UMS-Wright has a long-standing golfing tradition, boasting 20 AHSAA State Championship titles for boys’ golf. This past season, the girls began establishing a tradition of their own. For the first time

in the school’s history, the entire girls’ golf team qualified for the sub-state round of the playoffs by placing third in the Sectional Tournament. Each golfer worked hard to knock strokes off her game and defeat 32 opponents during their season, and each played a vital role in the success of the team. Look for these young ladies to make some noise again in the 2014 season and, hopefully, make it one step closer to the State Title. Go Bulldogs!!!
