Mission UMS-Wright

For the UMS-Wright Family to educate all students to their highest potential in mind, body, and spirit and to produce in each student character of the highest possible order.

An

Enhanced Learning Environment

It is with a great deal of enthusiasm that I serve as Chairman of the UMS-Wright Capital Campaign ADVANCING OUR MISSION IN MIND, BODY, and SPIRIT. The Board of Trustees has cast a bold vision for serving the needs of UMS-Wright students for generations to come. Over the past twenty-five years, our wonderful school has transformed from a campus designed to meet the academic and co-curricular needs of an all-male student body with an enrollment of 700 students into a superior educational environment for a coeducational student body of over 1,200. This transformation has been funded through the efforts of several capital campaigns and blessed by the incredible generosity of major benefactors and the entire UMS-Wright family of parents, grandparents, alumni, faculty and administration, Board of Trustees (both current and past) and genuine friends of our school. Now in 2014, this new campaign contains even more ambitious goals to further complete the transformation of our nearly 70-year-old campus and elevate UMS-Wright to an even higher level of excellence. The facilities which are to be constructed will provide 21st century students and their teachers with the best instructional tools available and an enhanced learning environment. In particular, construction of the new 5th and 6th grades classroom building and the renovation of Roberts Library will combine to give students in grades 5-12 a very special academic venue. Once this phase has been completed, renovations to the Lower School Campus will begin and academic enhancements such as the STEM curriculum, the One-to-One Digital Initiative, and the Academic Support Department will be completed.

These components of the campaign will affect each grade level and will provide the most effective means of helping each student reach his/her full potential in mind, body, and spirit. As a former student, parent and now grandparent, I ask that each reader carefully examine the details of this capital campaign. In my opinion, you will be extremely excited and impressed with the plan that has been created and the impact that it will have on young learners. Please join me in supporting ADVANCING OUR MISSION IN MIND, BODY, and SPIRIT as generously as you possibly can. I assure you that an investment in the future of UMS-Wright will have far-reaching effects and that you will be proud to be a part of such an inspiring achievement.

4 TRANSFORMING INTO THE 21ST CENTURY

Our leadership at UMS-Wright has developed exciting plans for our campus. These plans include the evolution of our wonderful facilities with a keen focus on the new ways of learning which will appeal to students and their families. Renovations will address specific areas around our campus that deserve immediate attention and upgrades. To make this happen, it’s going to take the collective help of everyone in the UMS-Wright family, including faculty, staff, trustees, honorary trustees, parents, alumni, past parents, grandparents, and friends.

Capital Campaign Objectives

5TH AND 6TH GRADE CLASSROOM BUILDING The 5th grade will be moved to the middle school in order to meet the instructional and co-curricular needs of these students more effectively. In addition, the 6th grade will also move to a new facility which will be more suitable for the 21st Century curriculum available to all middle school students.

CORINNE AUBERT ROBERTS LIBRARY RENOVATION A complete renovation of the Roberts Library that serves both Middle and Upper School students with new research computers and media center facilities will provide our students and faculty the necessary resources for a 21st century learning environment.

PARKING LOT The new parking lot will replace the spaces lost due to construction of the new 5th and 6th grade building as well as help accommodate guests for all campus events.

STEM STEM education at UMS-Wright will begin as early as K5 and extend through Upper School providing an interdisciplinary approach to learning which applies science, technology, engineering, and mathematics to real-world situations in order to make connections between school, community, work, and global enterprise to better prepare students for the future economy. In the future, the school would like to add more classes that pertain directly to engineering in the upper school and provide more opportunities for elementary students as well.

MOBILE STREET ACADEMIC WING RENOVATION This will include the final phase of the Wright Hall renovation as well as a renovation of Wilson Gym Foyer. Projects in Wright Hall will include classroom and office renovations, update of the electrical systems and the heating and air conditioning units along with the installation of a sprinkler system. In Wilson Gym Foyer, a renovation of restrooms, the addition of trophy cases and the improvement of electrical service and lighting will greatly improve our facilities for not only our faculty and staff but also our guests at our numerous athletic events throughout the year.

ACADEMIC SUPPORT DEPARTMENT Under the leadership of Sonya Yates, Academic Support Director and Certified Academic Language Therapist, this department of four full-time faculty members will help the administration monitor closely the progress of all students and will work with classroom teachers to address any gaps in student achievement which are identified. Academic Support is yet another means of improving instruction for all students and of ensuring that UMSWright remains in a constant state of improvement while achieving its goal of being a family school.

RENOVATIONS OF LOWER SCHOOL CLASSROOMS - MOORER & HARRIS HALLS There is an immediate need for more classroom space for grades K4 through 4. More classrooms will be available when the 5th grade moves to middle school. Renovations are needed to equip properly the newly available classrooms for foreign language and other enrichment classes.

BAND PRACTICE FIELD This field which is very prominent on Mobile Street needs modern lighting for band practice and track meets during the spring of the school year.

ARTS CENTER UPGRADE New lighting in the Auditorium is needed to replace the current system which is dated and costly to maintain.

Transforming into the 21st Century Each capital campaign that UMS-Wright has undertaken since the merger in 1988 has had two common outcomes. First, each one was hugely successful as a result of the loyalty and generosity of the members of this school community. Next, the success of each campaign resulted in dramatic improvements to the curriculum, facilities, and teaching staff. These memorable events set in motion the pattern of constant improvement which has existed at our school for over a quarter century. ADVANCING OUR MISSION IN MIND, BODY, and SPIRIT is the new campaign which began officially on September 11, 2014. Once again, UMS-Wright can move to an even higher level of excellence which will be exhilarating to the entire school family. This new initiative has the potential to elevate both the academic program and the character development of our students to newer, loftier heights. The proposed facility additions and improvements will have a profound effect on the future of UMS-Wright. 21st century students need 21st century classrooms containing the educational technologies and teaching materials students and their teachers need to prepare our young people to achieve ambitious goals. The new 5th and 6th grade classroom building, along with the major renovation of Roberts Library, will be the first step in helping UMS-Wright become the school it intends to be. These improvements will also allow the lower school campus to customize the four classrooms made available due to the 5th grade’s move into middle school. With the expansion of programs such as Modern and Classical Languages and the addition of STEM labs, the additional classroom spaces are crucial for the lower school as well. STEM learning, one-to-one instruction, virtual classes, and blended instruction all require classrooms that accommodate the exciting options available to highly skilled teachers and their very capable students. Similarly, outstanding facilities for the many co-curricular programs available to UMS-Wright’s students help enhance these experiences for those who participate and help attract the most talented coaches and instructors for the arts and athletics. This ambitious campaign will make all of these tools available over the next three years. Finally, the title of the campaign, ADVANCING OUR MISSION IN MIND, BODY, and SPIRIT, is a clear indication of the ultimate goal of this effort. UMS-Wright remains true to its Mission and to graduating students who possess “character of the highest possible order.” This reference to character repeats the exact words that Dr. Julius T. Wright wrote in the UMS Catalog of 1900. Over a century later, the leadership of this school remains committed to the vision of its extraordinary founder. Please help UMS-Wright further this vision by supporting ADVANCING OUR MISSION IN MIND, BODY, and SPIRIT. Dr. Tony W. Havard | HEADMASTER ADVANCING OUR MISSION | CAPITAL CAMPAIGN 5

Kick-Off Party

On September 11, parents, grandparents, faculty, staff, and alumni came together to learn more about the Advancing Our Mission Campaign, an effort to further execute the mission and principles on which our school was founded. Campaign Chairman Joe Bullard, joined by Board of Trustees Chairman Angus Cooper III and Headmaster Tony Havard, detailed the exciting plans in store for our students and campus. Mr. Bullard enthusiastically launched the campaign by announcing 100% participation from not only the Board of Trustees, but also the faculty and staff!

6 CAMPAIGN KICK-OFF EVENT

Gerald ReId Field

On September 23, UMS-Wright named a new athletic field in honor of Gerald Reid. Gerald joined the UMS Athletic Department in the spring of 1982 and remained as the Athletic Plant and Athletic Equipment Manager for UMS-Wright when the merger took place in 1988. For more than thirty years, Gerald Reid has maintained athletic facilities and has ensured that all student-athletes have had quality, safe equipment for practices and games. Gerald’s example of hard work, dependability, and fairness to all has enriched the lives of thousands of young athletes. UMS-Wright is proud to recognize this very special man by naming Gerald Reid Field in his honor.

Building More Than Just Buildings As Chairman of the Board of Trustees, I want you to know that I, along with the school’s dedicated Board, have not lost sight of our primary goal; educating all UMS-Wright students to their highest potential in mind, body, and spirit. In academics, athletics, and the arts; our teachers and coaches are at the top of their game, and the successes in these programs are the result. Even with so many impressive accomplishments in these crucial areas, the Development of Character remains the most important goal the school has had since Dr. Julius T. Wright opened its doors 121 years ago.

It is now time to take the next significant step in the school’s history by announcing the campaign for ADVANCING OUR MISSION IN MIND, BODY and SPIRIT. Ten years ago, the UMS-Wright Board of Trustees committed to a vision of making sure that we are a family school by creating an academic program in which each student would achieve success. To ensure that our students can develop fully their strengths and offset effectively their weaknesses, significant additions have been made to the curriculum. Three years ago, virtual classes became available for both enrichment and supplementary instruction, and this year the Neuhaus Educational Center’s curriculum will be added to the academic program. The Neuhaus Center, located in Houston, Texas, provides innovative faculty training and curricular enhancements which will help our students reach their full potential. In addition, the new STEM labs which were installed during the summer will enrich students’ classroom experiences even more. However, each of these programs needs to expand for our students to benefit fully from them, and a successful capital campaign will make these expansions possible. With regard to building and grounds, the main focus will be the addition of a new 5th and 6th grade building in the current senior parking lot and the accompanying upgrades to Roberts Library. The movement of the 5th grade to middle school will make their academic program and co-curricular opportunities even more attractive and will provide the lower school with some much-needed classroom space. All of these transitions will give the 5th and 6th graders a new home with state of the art classrooms and a new library/media center for the middle and upper schools. Finally, the campaign will make possible the renovation of the Mobile Street wing which contains both academic and administrative spaces. The renovations will include the areas from Wright Hall to Wilson Gym Foyer. As you can see, the next few years will be very busy as we make the next leap in UMS-Wright’s history. The Board of Trustees and UMS-Wright’s Administration are very excited about what the future will bring. Let’s have a great school year and a successful campaign.

Angus R. Cooper, III | UMS-Wright Board Chairman
