COVID-19 Plan of Action DAILY HEALTH SCREENS SOCIAL DISTANCING
UMS-Wright will conduct daily screenings of staff and students before they are granted access to buildings. The screening consists of a temperature check and health-related questions.
Staff and students will maintain a physical distance of 6 feet from individuals outside of their household. If closer distance is required, the duration will be no longer than 10 minutes.
HEALTH PRACTICES
UMS-Wright will encourage frequent and specific hand washing (e.g. when coming into contact with high-touch surfaces, before eating). Facial coverings are required.
LEARNING ENVIRONMENT
Each classroom has been evaluated so that social distancing guidelines may be maintained, including removal of unnecessary objects.
AVOID LARGE GATHERINGS CLEANING PROTOCOLS
Large gatherings will not take place when social distancing cannot be achieved (e.g. assemblies, pep rallies).
UMS-Wright has developed a systematic and methodical process of cleaning based on up-to-date recommendations by the Alabama Department of Health, the CDC and our Medical Advisory Board. Click here for more information.

EDUCATIONAL PATHWAYS 2020-2021
PATHWAY ONE:
On-Campus Instruction
In-person instruction will resume on August 11, 2020 for all students enrolled in our on-campus instructional model. The school day will run from 7:40 - 2:30 (K3), 7:40-2:45 (K4-4), and 7:40 - 2:51 (5-12). Students / staff will proceed through a screening process each morning to obtain entry to buildings. Students in grades K3-6 will remain in cohort groupings throughout the instructional day. Students in grades 7-12 will proceed through a fixed seven period day, Monday - Friday. Class sizes are being adjusted so that we may maintain proper social distance, and all staff and students in grades K3-12 will be required to wear face coverings for the safety of both staff and students. UMS-Wright has developed a systematic and methodical process of cleaning based on up-to-date recommendations by the Alabama Department of Health, the CDC and our Medical Advisory Board. Information regarding day-to-day operations will be forthcoming.
PATHWAYS TWO AND THREE:
Adaptable Learning For those families impacted by COVID-19, we will offer our students the opportunity to participate in an Adaptable Learning Pathway appropriate to their grade level. Adaptable Learning defines the experience students will have when school remains in session, but individual students cannot physically attend school because of COVID-19 related situations. While Adaptable Learning is not equivalent to in-person learning, the UMS-Wright faculty will provide high-quality remote instruction to continue academic progress and attend to the social/emotional well-being of students until they are able to return to school. Pathway Two: If a student in grades K3-12 is quarantined due to COVID-19, he/she will be required to participate in a virtual learning experience. Pathway Three: If a family elects for their child to receive a UMS-Wright education from home, he/she will be provided an age-appropriate experience detailed later in this document. There is a quarter commitment for those who elect to participate in this Adaptable Learning Pathway, and the school must be notified in writing (covid19reporting@umswright.org) by July 31. Please note: While a student is participating in the Adaptable Learning Pathway, tuition rates will remain the same and the student is not permitted to participate in any co-curricular activities.
PATHWAY FOUR:
Mandated Remote Learning
There may be situations that mandate the closure of a classroom, grade level, division or entire campus. If this is the case, the impacted group would be immersed in full-time remote learning. The UMS-Wright Curriculum and Instruction team is conducting ongoing training for teachers to provide the most effective remote learning experience based upon continuous research of successful online methodology.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS LOWER SCHOOL
How/where will temperatures be checked as students arrive each day? Temperatures will be checked by staff members in the carpool line before students leave the car. Masks must be on to get temperature checked. If someone has a temperature of 100.4 or higher, the student will remain in the vehicle and will be checked again after ten minutes. Those with a second reading after ten minutes of more than 100.4 will be asked to leave campus. Will a child be checked more than once if the temp is too high due to the heat? What is that process? The student’s temperature (100.4 or higher) will be checked again after ten minutes of sitting in the airconditioned car. If a student shows COVID symptoms during the day, what happens? The student will be taken to predetermined area, and the parent will be notified to pick up the child. How will carpool work as far as social distancing? After the temperature check, students will get out of the car and head to the classroom. In the afternoon, students will be dismissed car-by-car to help with the social distancing protocol. What will the classroom setting be so that students are distanced? Desks and extra furniture will be removed from the classroom so that desks may be 6 feet apart to adhere to social distancing protocol. Will students have to wear the masks all day? If not, when will they be required to wear them? Will they wear them on the playground, in the classroom, in times of transition? Students will wear masks indoors when it is practical. Examples of when it is not practical to wear a mask: while eating lunch, taking a nap, playing an instrument. When outdoors, masks do not have to be worn when students are not in close contact. Close contact is defined as “within six feet of another student for fifteen minutes or more, consistently.” Will a specific type mask be required? Does it have to have a filter insert? There is no uniform face covering requirement; students may wear a mask or buff. The only requirement is that the mask is to be an appropriate one for UMS-Wright students. For example, no political masks or sports team masks may be worn. How will it be decided to close down a “hot spot” in a class or grade, for example if five students in a class test positive? Decisions will be based on the ADPH (Alabama Department of Public Health) guidance and current guidelines. Exposure and close contact will be evaluated. If students are grouped for the day, how will PE work? Boys will change for PE in the classroom, and girls will take off their jumpers and wear their shorts to PE with their regular uniform shirt. Students will report to the same PE teacher when they have PE and remain in homeroom cohorts. PE will be outside as frequently as possible. Students will remain with their particular class for PE.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS LOWER SCHOOL
Will they still have special classes (art, music, etc.)? If so, will the special teachers come to the classrooms, or will the students go to the teachers’ rooms? Students will still have art, music, and Spanish weekly, along with PE and recess, and the special teacher will push into classrooms so students do not have to utilize the same space or share supplies. Safety guidelines will be followed in the classes, and a thorough cleaning will occur after each class. Lunch: Will lunch be grab and go, or will hot meals be served? Students may bring their lunch or will have two meal options for lunch each day; they will submit their lunch orders in the morning, and lunch will be delivered to the classrooms. The meal options for each month will be posted on our website. Classes will have the option to eat in the classroom or outside, weather permitting. We request that students bring to school a beach towel to sit on during lunch outside to ensure they remain socially distanced since their masks will be off. Will classrooms be cleaned periodically throughout the day? Cleaning supplies will be in each classroom, including spray disinfectant and paper towels. Classrooms will be cleaned regularly throughout the day. At the end of the day, how will students be dismissed to keep with the social distancing protocol? Students will stay in the classrooms until they are notified to go to carpool. We will dismiss in waves; when parents arrive, the classroom teacher will be notified to send the child to carpool. If a student is sent home with symptoms, will parents in that particular class be informed? If so, how/when? Yes, parents will be notified based on advisement by our COVID team and the Mobile Department of Health. Will extended care still be an option? Will after school programs continue? Extended care and after school programs will continue, but social distancing protocol will be followed.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS MIDDLE & UPPER SCHOOL
With all of the entry points on campus, how will temperature checks work in the morning? The entry point for juniors and seniors will be the sliding glass doors in Heritage Hall. Sophomores who park in the sophomore parking lot will be checked at the playground gate, and grades 5-9 who are dropped off on Mobile Street will be checked in the carpool line along the Mobile Street entrance. Masks must be on to get temperature checked. Any students in grades 5-9 who ride with students in grades 10-12 will be checked at the sliding doors or at the playground gate. Will there be a record/follow up of students who had a temperature of 100.4 or higher? A detailed record will be kept of all students who show symptoms, test for COVID, etc. Follow-up will be conducted. Is there a uniform mask that is required? When will masks be worn? There is no uniform face covering requirement; students may wear a mask or buff. The only requirement is that the mask is to be an appropriate one for UMS-Wright students. For example, no political masks or sports team masks may be worn. Where will students go before the initial bell rings since they can’t gather in groups in the halls? Students are encouraged to arrive on campus at 7:30 am. At that time, they will go to their first period class where they will remain until the start of the school day. How will class changes work as far as social distancing? Students will follow directional guidelines (one side of the hall will move in one direction, and the other side will move in the opposite direction; one stairwell will be the “up” stairwell, and one will be the “down” stairwell). How many students will be in each class in order to follow protocol? Class sizes were determined based on the size of each individual classroom. For example, some classrooms may seat twelve students with social distancing, and some may accommodate eighteen based on the size of the classroom. Since students change classes, how will classrooms be cleaned between sessions? Teachers will have disinfectant spray and paper towels to clean between classes. How will Fine Arts work? Do students need to bring their own art supplies, for example? Students will have their own art supplies, and the classrooms are set up based on the social distancing guidelines. Students will go to their Fine Arts classes, and the class protocol varies (art, drama, band, chorus) based on the guidelines set forth by the CDC and the ADPH. How will break and lunch work since grades 9-12 all have break/lunch at the same time in their schedule? Students will have basic options for lunch (no salad bar, varied choices) and will sit in any of the following locations: cafeteria (social distanced seating), outside in the courtyard in designated spots or under the large tent which will be outside to accommodate more seating. On rainy days, students will eat in the classrooms; they will eat in the class they have after lunch.
