Don’t Miss Homecoming Weekend - Oct. 25th!
From the Alumni Office: Dear Alumni, I have always had a lot of passion for my alma mater and love serving the school and our Alumni base day in and day out. Now, I have the joy of being a parent, where I can see my children benefit from the education and experiences at UMS-Wright—just as we did. I have always been a supporter of this school; however, I did not fully understand the importance of giving back to the school, until I began working here. I encourage you to give back to the school whether it is through volunteering your time or supporting our various giving opportunities. We hope to see you back on campus soon! Alumni PROFILE
Ashley Steiner Kelly ’89 Jason Cole ’89
An outstanding accomplishment of the 1st graduating class of UMS-Wright was that Ashley Steiner Kelly ’89 and Jason Cole ’89 were Alabama’s only Presidential Scholars that year. What are they up to 25 years later? Ashley Steiner Kelly graduated from Vanderbilt in 1993 with a double major in political science and Russian. She pursued a law degree at Emory as the Sol Golden Scholar and graduated with distinction in 1997. After law school, she was awarded a clerkship with Judge Jacques Wiener Jr. of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit. Following her clerkship, she returned to Atlanta to work for the law firm of Arnall Golden Gregory LLP. She was made partner in 2005. She practices in the areas of employment litigation and complex business litigation. She is currently the co-chair of the firm’s Litigation Practice Group and the firm’s Deputy General Counsel. She has been named a “Georgia Rising Star” by Atlanta magazine on numerous occasions and has also been recognized by Chamber USA: America’s Leading Lawyers for Business in labor and employment law. She and her husband, Jim Kelly, have two boys, Decker (6) and Sawyer (3). Jason Cole attended Emory for undergraduate and then UAB for medical school. He completed an internal medicine residency at Brigham and Women’s Hospital/Harvard Medical School in Boston and then a cardiology fellowship back at Emory. He also completed a master’s degree in clinical research at the Rollins School of Public Health (Emory) and spent some time doing clinical outcomes research at Emory. He moved to Mobile in 2004 to join Cardiology Associates, where he practices general cardiology. A large portion of his time is spent in research on cardiovascular CT scanning, which is a new, noninvasive imaging technique for the heart. Cardiology Associates was the first private cardiology practice in the country to possess the most advanced 64-slice CT scanner in 2005. Also, as an adjunct professor at the University of South Alabama, he directs the fellows training program in cardiac CT there. He and his wife, Jennifer, have a daughter Juliette (3) and two boys, Jacob and Joshua, who started K-4 at UMS-Wright this fall.
Ashley Steiner Kelly ‘89 What interesting things have you experienced through your career path? One of the things that I
enjoy and find most interesting about my job is that no two cases are alike. At any given time, I might be handling a discrimination dispute here in Atlanta, an overtime claim in California, and a noncompete case in Washington DC. I am able to work with different clients, many of whom are located in other countries, and learn about different businesses.
How do you feel UMS-Wright prepared you for both your personal and professional life? At UMS-Wright, I learned to work hard, be inquisitive, think critically, and
write coherently – all skills that are very important in my line of work. On a personal level, UMSWright instilled in me the importance of integrity and giving back to the community. Perhaps most importantly, I made life-long friendships with both my classmates and the faculty.
What is your fondest memory of JTW, UMS or UMS-Wright? I have so many! I immediately think of Mr. Hamner reading “’Twas the Night Before Christmas” every year during the assembly before Christmas break, walking around the campus ringing his bell to signal the end of each school year, and, of course, singing “When You’re Smiling”. This spring, Jim and I took our older son to Disney World for the first time, and he really enjoyed hearing about our sixth grade trip to Disney World. I don’t think I fully appreciated at the time how brave our teachers must have been to stay in tents for a week with a bunch of sixth grade girls. What advice would you give yourself in high school? Take a breath! Looking back,
I think I probably tried to be involved in too many activities without taking enough time to enjoy them. But, I am so grateful for all the opportunities afforded me at JTW and UMS-Wright.
If you could have dinner with any of your former teachers, whom would you choose? I hope it’s a large table, because I had so many great teachers. I would love to spend time
with some of my teachers from when I was in the Lower School, such as Mrs. Schneider and Miss Lyle. They were so generous with their time and such fun. Mrs. Lillich and Mrs. Hannum made history come alive and always had such interesting stories. And then there’s the entire English Department, Mrs. Bosler, Ms. Dorgan, Mrs. McDonald ... I couldn’t possibly pick just one.
What is the best advice you have ever received? My mom always told me to pick my battles. As it turns out, that advice is equally applicable in my job and with my kids. As a child, what did you want to be when you grew up? I didn’t have one chosen career path, but becoming an ESPN SportsCenter anchor was always near the top of the list.
What was your first job? I interned for Congressman Callahan in Washington DC while in
college. My duties included giving tours of the Capitol, meeting with visitors from his district, and answering letters from constituents. I almost hate to call that a job because it was so much fun.
What is the most rewarding aspect of your job? At its core, practicing law is about problem-solving. It’s very rewarding when a client comes to me with an issue, and I am able to help resolve it – whether that means negotiating an amicable resolution or taking the case to trial. In addition, I work with a lot of great people, including one other JTW alumna. What is your favorite hobby or activity with your family? I have two sons – Decker, who is six, and Sawyer, who is three. Decker plays soccer and baseball, and Sawyer is just starting to play soccer also, so our family spends a lot of time at the ball park.
What is your most rewarding community service outreach? Other than pro bono
legal work, which can be tremendously rewarding, I recently taught a Sunday School class for high school students. They made me feel quite old, but I was so impressed by their creativity and initiative.
Jason Cole ‘89 What interesting things have you experienced through your career path?
These interview questions coincide with the 25th anniversary of my senior year in high school, and of course that has the effect of making me feel really old! However I managed to add enough time to my medical training—a cardiology fellowship and an additional degree in clinical research and public health that I still feel like a young cardiologist! Even so, the way the world of medicine is changing fascinates me. I started my cardiology fellowship in 2000, and on a daily basis I use tools for patient care that were not even mentioned in research publications at that time. My biggest clinical focus has been research in the development of cardiovascular CT imaging. With a few seconds in a machine, we can find out more information about a person’s heart than could be determined with an hour long, risky invasive procedure that involves inserting catheters inside the heart itself. I really think that if you are standing still in medical practice, you aren’t offering your patients the best care.
How do you feel UMS-Wright prepared you for both your personal and professional life? When you attend a school for thirteen formative years,
almost every aspect of your life is touched in one way or another. For me, I think I benefited from an environment where I was challenged to perform every task as well as I possibly could. I think if you are going to be successful, you need to figure out what you excel in, but you cannot limit your focus too much. UMS and then UMS-Wright provided classmates and teachers who helped me strive for true excellence, but it was also a comfortable environment that encouraged me to strive for success in multiple areas – be it academics, leadership, athletics, etc.
What advice would you give yourself in high school? Absolutely nothing in any
aspect of your life is as important as it seems at the time.
If you could have dinner with any of your former teachers, whom would you choose? That is probably the hardest question you have asked. There were so many
teachers that singling out any one is probably not fair. The one thing that I will say though is that when you return to your hometown many years later, you keep running into those from your past – in my case I have even seen some teachers as patients. I think it would be fascinating to have a dinner with my elementary school teachers just to get a chance to relate to all of them as adults.
What is the best advice you have ever received? My grandfather would get me out of bed at 7:00 am many summer mornings to work with him mowing lawns, and when I was dragging one morning he told me, “Just work hard and most things will take care of themselves.” It is amazing how often we worry about things that we just need to let God take care of – while we ignore the hard work that we need to do. As a child, what did you want to be when you grew up? I don’t remember every one of my multiple “career goals”, but my mother has a picture of me at about age 6 or 7 listening to my baby brother with a stethoscope; so I think I was on my way to medicine pretty early – at least after I got over my resolve to be a professional baseball player. What was your first job? Cashier at Hardee’s the summer before my senior year in
high school.
What was the strangest question that you were asked in an interview?
I don’t remember ever having one of those interviews where they ask you how to save the world with only a pocketknife and a loaf of bread, but I will never forget this blunt question when I was interviewing for a cardiology fellowship at Duke. One of the national leaders in the field just stared across the table and said, “There are already way too many cardiologists in the world. Why should we let you be another one?” The strangest thing about that is that now, every time I am on call, I wish there were far more cardiologists!
What is the most rewarding aspect of your job? Like most cardiologists, I was attracted to the field by the thought of helping people in the midst of a medical crisis, like a heart attack. However, I am probably most rewarded now by using new, emerging technology in prevention. Detecting early atherosclerosis in a young person and initiating effective preventive therapy—stopping a heart problem BEFORE it hurts someone--is clearly the most rewarding thing that I do.
What is your favorite hobby or activity with your family?
Our twin boys turn five this September, and with three children under five, just about any calm moment at home is a rewarding time with family! Seriously, however, Jennifer and I really enjoyed travelling before we had kids, and we have decided to keep that up with them. We took the boys to Switzerland last summer and it turned out to be a great experience – hopefully we can continue this as they get older and are more able to fully appreciate other cultures.
What is your most rewarding community service outreach? Our practice has had the opportunity to provide medical care through Victory Health Partners, which is a local ministry that cares for uninsured working people. This group of people often “falls through the cracks” and this is a wonderful program that makes a real difference in their lives.

This is a lovely six-string instrument, tuned in fourths much like a guitar—a copy of a Renaissance instrument popular in England at the time of Shakespeare. She plays music from the late 1500’s and early 1600’s, in ensembles of 5-6 treble, tenor and bass viols. Ann attends early music conferences each year in Monteagle and in Cullowhee, N.C. with friends from all over the country.

Robert “Cobb” Rogers ’66 lives in Brussels, Belgium and has been associated with the American Club of Brussels since 2002. The club recently asked him to inquire about the practice of “adopting” the grave of one of the thousands of Americans buried on Belgian soil. He chose the Henri-Chapelle Cemetery in eastern Belgium, the final resting place of about 9000 Americans, most of who died either in the Ardennes Battle, as the Battle of the Bulge is known here, or later fighting in Germany. He asked whether they could locate a soldier from Mobile, and coincidentally the club found the grave of Pvt. Charles F. Grove, Jr ’39, a graduate of UMS, to adopt. Grove is buried in one of the two US military cemeteries from WWII in the eastern part of Belgium, very close to the German border and just a few kilometers from Aachen, Germany, where Private Grove was killed in action. In the UMS-Wright archives, there is a condolence letter from Senator Hill to Mrs. Grove which stated where Grove was laid to rest. It is believed that the burial site mentioned was probably the initial interment site for some of the fallen Americans, from which families were given the option until about 1947 of repatriating remains at the government’s expense. It contains the graves of almost 8000 Americans who died in the fighting prior to and following the famous Battle of the Bulge. Rogers participated in the American Club of Brussels visit to Pvt. Grove’s grave. By custom, at least one of the US ambassadors in Belgium and the ambassador to the Kingdom of Belgium attended the service, along with generals and admirals from NATO and SHAPE.
