Letter from the Headmaster
Mobile. The many available options in the curricular and co-curricular areas helped students work toward reaching their full potential in mind, body, and spirit.
Dear UMS-Wright Family, The 2010-11 school year was a time of tremendous achievements and progress for UMS-Wright, and the progress continued into the summer in preparation for 201112. In particular, the instructional program, faculty, and facilities have all been blessed with steady progress over the past two decades. Consisting of both curricular and co-curricular components, UMS-Wright’s instructional program once again helped students reach great heights during 2010-11. More than 80% of the graduates in the Class of 2011 earned merit-based college scholarships while Advanced Placement students’ pass rate on the 247 AP exams taken in May 2011 was a school record 87%. For the second consecutive year, Bulldog athletic teams won nine state championships, and students who took part in the numerous programs available in the Arts won impressive awards as well as regularly entertaining members of the school community with their talents. Whether through individual effort or as a member of a service organization, UMS-Wright students performed 17,563 hours of community service and a member of the Class of 2011 was named Youth Volunteer of the Year in

Our faculty members continue to grow professionally and to promote excellence in their students. Impressive student achievements are the results of the combined efforts of willing students and devoted teachers. UMS-Wright’s faculty members are extremely well prepared to teach and inspire young people. Among the 102 staff members who teach our students; 54 have Master’s Degrees, 2 have Educational Specialist Degrees, and 7 have earned doctorates. As a result of the academic endowments and the school’s financial support for ongoing professional development, many staff members continue to work toward advanced degrees while all staff members regularly take part in professional growth activities. UMS-Wright’s teachers are extremely well prepared, totally dedicated to their students, and extraordinarily passionate about teaching. Such characteristics help ensure that the faculty will continue to improve each year. Finally, the school’s facilities can help create a learning environment which invigorates students and which attracts the most professionally gifted teachers. Today’s educational facilities must not only be attractive, comfortable, and safe; but they must also include the technological advances which promote the learning process in the 21st century and prepare students for college. Work on the UMS-Wright campus began in May 2011 and has included 19 projects designed to provide our students with the finest learning environment possible. Among these 19 projects were complete renovation of McGowin Hall, installation of a new computerized writing lab in the Roberts Building, total renovation of the Lower School’s playgrounds, and an impres-

sive upgrade to the school’s track and field facilities. Notably, the majority of the projects have been funded by the UMS-Wright Parents’ Association and,in the case of the track, private donations. I hope you will, as I do, derive a great sense of inspiration from the accomplishments of our students, their teachers, and their coaches as well as the loyalty of the generous supporters of this school. More importantly, I hope that each member of this school community will reflect on the level of blessings we have received and acknowledge how these blessings have resulted in the current condition of our school. UMS-Wright is truly a remarkable institution in which to teach and learn. Hopefully, we will be able to look back at the end of 2011-12 and say that the school is even more remarkable than ever before. Sincerely,
Tony W. Havard, Ed.D. Headmaster

Letter from the Chairman Dear UMS-Wright Community; August 16, 2011, the first day of the 2011-2012 school year, marked the beginning of the 119th year of existence for our school. We started the year with a total of 1,267 students enrolled in all grades. Our Lower School began the year with its largest enrollment in school history, 600. Many of our faculty and staff members spent the summer furthering their education in post graduate work or other professional growth activities. In fact, we now have 7 staff members with doctorates and over 60 who are working on a Master’s degree or have already completed this graduate degree. Indeed, UMS-Wright has an outstanding faculty and staff. The UMS-Wright campus had several significant projects, nineteen total, occurring during the summer. Among these projects were renovations of the Roberts Library, renovations of classrooms in McGowin Hall, complete resurfacing of the track, installation of improved drainage on Cooper Stadium and Radcliff Field, and revamping of the Lower School’s playground. The Building and Grounds Committee of the Board of Trustees, along with UMSWright’s administration staff, performed a thorough needs assessment to identify each of these projects and then monitored their progress to ensure both a timely and cost-effective completion.
the school is positioned or the performance of its student body. UMS-Wright does invest in what matters the most and their performance in the classroom, on the field or court, and on the stage is the return we seek. Finally, as the new school year begins, I encourage all our students to make the best of the opportunities they have this school year. Now is the time to lay the foundation upon which they can build the rest of their lives. If I may I would borrow some of the younger generation’s jargon to further my point. “You gotta bring it and you gotta bring it every day!” “It” is the desire, determination and focus to better oneself in mind, body and spirit. I wish for each UMS-Wright student, teacher, parent, administrator, and supporter an enjoyable and productive school year. Go Bulldogs!!! Sincerely, Robert M. Hope, Jr., Chairman UMS-Wright Board of Trustees
Throughout the years, UMS-Wright has been able to depend on successful fundraising campaigns. In particular, the Annual Fund and the Parents’ Association’s “Puttin’ on the Dawg” take place each year and help keep tuition at reasonable levels and help fund school improvements. In 2010-11, these efforts were successful once again. The fact that these campaigns were successful in a harsh economic time is a solid statement that the school’s supporters believe in its mission. Increased enrollment, outstanding faculty credentials, improved facilities, and successful fundraising efforts are all results of the implementation of a strategic plan which has identified priorities and developed strategies that ensure UMS-Wright’s stability and progress for the future. Our school prayer states, “may our words and deeds be such that those who were before us will not be ashamed.” I don’t think any of those before us would be ashamed of where

Galle-Leatherbury Track Twenty-eight years ago, the family of Frank L. Leatherbury generously donated funds to complete the first track on what was then the UMS campus and is today the expanded campus of UMS-Wright. Leatherbury Track has served the school very well and has been resurfaced three times. Earlier this year, the UMS-Wright administration and the board of directors decided to renovate the track surface so that we can continue this legacy. After thoughtful research, the school selected Hellas Construction to resurface the track with the Sports Tracks 4000 product. Hellas products have been installed at hundreds of schools and universities across the country, and the Sport Tracks 4000 product has most recently been installed on the University of Georgia track. Once it is completed, UMS-Wright will feature one of the premiere high school tracks in the Southeast. The UMS-Wright family also chose to honor Coach Pat Galle by adding his name to the track upon its completion. Coach Galle has served as the cross country and track and field coach for UMS and UMS-Wright for 39 years, and he has amassed 48 state championships to date. The new GalleLeatherbury Track will benefit not only the current studentathletes but will also help future Bulldogs reach their potential as well. The school honored the Leatherbury family and Coach Galle at a field dedication on the new track on September 23 just prior to kickoff of the UMS-Wright vs. Mary G. Montgomery game at Ervin S. Cooper Stadium.

Looking Back Helps Us Move Forward
With one hundred and eighteen years of invaluable history behind us and a bright and promising future ahead, what better way to honor our students, faculty, and alumni than by preserving our past and by giving our present and future a place to eventually call home. As such, the Advancement Department has taken on the exciting task of creating a historic archives. The archives will be eventually housed in the Advancement Department and will contain old books, uniforms, letters, newspaper articles, videos, scrapbooks, pictures, programs, and much more. Long time UMS-Wright supporter and board member, Sandy Stimpson, spearheaded this project and noted, “We should all be excited about having the school’s archives organized. UMS-Wright’s history is so rich in tradition and outstanding achievement – things which should be chronicled and remembered. Within our archives we find writings of Dr. Wright about why the school exists and the values that we stand upon. We can also identify the high and low points throughout our history. In reflecting upon our history, we can established increasingly higher goals in the ongoing quest to improve the school.” If you have items you would like to donate or would just like to come for a visit and check it out, please contact Eliza Lewis in the Advancement Department.

Advancing Athletics
Fall 2011 UMS-Wright Magazine
Advancing Athletics The 2010-11 school year was an extraordinarily successful time for UMS-Wright athletics. For a second consecutive year, our student-athletes brought home nine state championships. During the fall sports season, UMS-Wright’s boys and girls cross country teams won their respective state championships while Bulldog squads once again dominated the spring sports season by winning seven state championships. These spring championships included boys and girls outdoor track and field, boys and girls tennis, boys soccer, boys golf, and baseball. Also of note is the fact that eighteen student-athletes from the Class of 2011 decided to participate in interscholastic sports on the collegiate level. These young men and women helped lead their teammates to great heights in 2010-11. The current sports year, 2011-12 also holds great promise. Even though many of our varsity squads are made up predominantly of younger athletes, the seniors on these teams are dependable, effective leaders who will ensure that our performances are determined, if not literally inspired. The fall sports season will be tremendously challenging, but our athletes are looking forward to great success in the upcoming playoffs. Matching or surpassing last year’s performance will be a challenge, but our dedicated athletes routinely rise to the occasion in competition and always represent UMS-Wright well. No one who is familiar with our school’s sports history will be surprised if our studentathletes once again win an impressive number of state championships. Compassion & Eagerness... Making A Difference I am highly impressed with the eagerness of our students to not only seek out opportunities, but also create projects that will benefit others. The daily lives of the UMS-Wright student body consist of rigorous studies followed with a variety of co-curricular activities throughout the school year. Nevertheless, many of our students, both young and old, do not hesitate to give their time and talents to do for others. In the middle school alone, the vast array of projects range from making hair accessories/jewelry to building wooden patio furniture, all sold for profit so as to enable UMS-Wright to make worthy donations to a variety of non-profit organizations near and dear to our hearts. In the high school, the variety of ways our students serve others is just as abundant. On any given day, you may find our students tutoring with the ESL program (English as a Second Language), learning and using new skills with Habitat for Humanity or educating the community on women’s health issues in foreign countries. On this year’s Service Day, our 9th through 12th grades have taken on a variety of new and exciting projects around Mobile. Our 9th grade jointly distributed food with the Bay Area Food Bank and the Center for Family and Community Development.
The 10th grade worked with the Mobile Historic Preservation Society at Oakleigh Mansion by helping with grounds keeping. The 11th grade teamed up with Habitat for Humanity and helped to build three houses in the Hillsdale Community, and our 12th grade will be starting on a new project with St. Mary’s Home. It’s clear that so many of our students wish to enhance their lives with the feeling that comes from trying to make a difference. Their compassion is evident in the smallest of deeds to the greatest of endeavors. I commend our students for their actions and efforts, and I value the opportunity to be in their presence and hear their ideas. It is during these times that I am able to witness first hand the true character and kindness of these individuals. I hope that each one realizes that it is only by doing for others that they will reach “their highest potential in mind, body and spirit.” Tiffany Chapman - Student Life Coordinator Opposite page: Class of 2011 Service Project Pictures Above: Left to Right Left: Lizzie McDonald working for Habitat for Humanity.
