Alumni Profile

Dr. Augustine “Four” Meaher, IV Who knew that the experiences in high school of discussing military

history in gym class and world affairs on the rides home from football games would lead Four Meaher ‘93 halfway around the world to Estonia? Now, Dr. Augustine “Four” Meaher, IV conducts research and teaches NATO officers at the Baltic Defense College in Estonia. His teachings include: World Civilization Surveys, British History, and Military History. Meaher received a B.A. from Georgetown University and his M.A. from Tulane. He continued his education at the University of Melbourne and Newman College where he received his PhD. He has taken time from his busy schedule to answer questions posed to him by the Alumni Office.

1) What brought you to Estonia and how long have you been there?

I arrived in Estonia in August of 2010. I saw the position advertised and decided to apply because it was a part of the world I’d never been to and had always wanted to visit. That it was a cold part of the world helped too.

2) Tell us about your experiences as a researcher and a teacher of NATO officers.

Teaching and researching with the military is very different from working at a civilian institution. The resources are incredible and the speed with which educational materials can be obtained from anywhere in the world is amazing. Teaching, however, is where the difference is most noticeable. The first semester is dedicated to classroom learning with a department delivering an entire semester’s worth of teaching done in a single month. The second semester is dedicated to practical experience with exercises and war gaming during which I get to be a subject matter expert or role play as an admiral, president, war lord, etc.

3) What are your plans after you complete your fellowship in Estonia?

My appointment has one more year to run, but I would like to extend it. I’ll probably try to transfer somewhere within Europe or return to Australia, but it’s a long way off.

4) Tell us about your time at Newman College in Australia and your publication.

I first went to Newman as an exchange student from Georgetown and fell in love with it and Melbourne. Newman is a lot like UMS in terms of its sense of community and history. I returned in 2002 to work on my PhD which I completed and then turned it into a book, The Australian Road to Singapore: The Myth of British Betrayal. I worked at Newman as the College Archivist for 3 years and organized and catalogued the college’s records in preparation for the writing of the College history which I hope to write for Newman’s centenary in 2017-2018.

5) What are some other interesting things that you have gotten to experience through your career path?

Oh there are lots: flying on a military transport with Generals and Admirals to conferences, going hunting in Luxembourg at the Royal Estate and sitting in the George S. Patton Stand, taking a cruise in a German U-Boat, giving a lecture to the French Foreign Legion.

6) How do you feel UMS-Wright has prepared you for both your personal and professional life?

UMS prepared me very well personally and professionally. Its emphasis on analysis, communication, and making decisions and sticking with them is something that I have to do and try to instill in all of my students. At a practical level, every time I give a lecture or a briefing I’m very thankful for what Mrs. Peirara and Mrs. Roberts taught me in speech and drama classes. I was in the first Geography class that had to learn all of the former Soviet Republics and their capitals with Coach Doody and in my present position that’s priceless knowledge, since I’m dealing with them all the time.

7) What is your fondest memory of UMS/UMS-Wright?

Oh there are so many it’s impossible to pick out one, so I’ll pick 4: Sitting in Mrs. Lillich’s, Mrs. Hanum’s, or Mrs. Hamilton’s class. Working on the Stage Crew with Billy Healy, Alex Flowers, Chris Arras, Judson Fidler, and Scott Griffin. Talking to Coach Havard about world affairs on the long rides from football games. Talking about military history with Coach Galle and Gerald in gym.
