student ORIENTATION FEES

Prior to orientation Checklist

New Student Fee There is no orientation fee for new students. The orientation program provides materials, meals, refreshments, the services of the Orientation Leaders during your Orientation Experience and the variety of first year programming held during the entire year. Triton Overnight Experience Admitted students starting their academic journey will have an opportunity to stay in an individual room in Oak Residence Hall the night before their Orientation session. The program will begin at 4:00 pm with check-in at Oak Hall. Triton Overnight Experience (Two Options): Monday, June 2, 2014 Monday, June 23, 2014

GETTING READY FOR THE ORIENTATION EXPERIENCE By the time you attend Orientation, your advisor already knows your name. You may have already met electronically or in person. Now you will meet face to face. Your advisor will help you learn to navigate campus, your academic preparation, course preferences, and your advisor’s knowledge of University requirements will come together as you craft an UMSL academic plan. At the end of your advising meeting, you will finalize your class schedule and leave with a printed schedule. Before you meet with your academic advisor, please read the Bulletin to review university course descriptions, academic requirements, and general education requirements at www.umsl.edu/bulletin. After all, you want to be in the driver’s seat as you plan your educational path. During your Orientation experience, you will have time to sit with an academic advisor to finalize your schedule and ask any final questions. If you would like to meet individually with an academic advisor prior to Orientation to have preliminary discussions, please contact your college that is listed below. NEW STUDENT ORIENTATION (NSO) is a full day on campus programs for newly admitted first year and transfer students with 30 or fewer college credit hours. Orientation is mandatory for all first time college students. TRANSFER STUDENT ORIENTATION (TSO) is a half day on campus program for newly admitted transfer students with more than 30 college credit hours. 4

INTERNATIONAL STUDENT ORIENTATION (ISO) is a twoday program for newly admitted international students with less than 30 or fewer U.S. college credit hours. Visa-holding international students are required to attend ISO and NSO. PARENTS AND FAMILIES AT UMSL, we recognize that families are an integral part of your student’s college journey. Orientation to university life is important to help family members understand the transitions and support their new students. In an effort to provide families with specific information about the university and the campus resources available to new students, a specifically tailored parent program will be provided. As the family of a new Triton, you are part of the larger UMSL family- a family rich in heritage and educational opportunities. The triton family includes not only those who choose to study here but the thousands of graduates who remember with pride their experiences here at UMSL, and who work and teach at the University. We are dedicated to providing unique educational experiences for our students, and families that will be valued for years to come.

Students who participate in the overnight option will have an opportunity to meet other new students who they might live with once school begins, and will also be able to learn more about the UMSL on-campus living experience and meet with your Orientation Leaders. This will give you further opportunities to ask questions about the campus in the informal setting of the residence hall. The overnight component will allow you to relax the night before and be ready to wake up the next morning to complete and be engaged in their New Student Orientation session. There is a $25.00 fee for students to pay and register for this overnight program. This fee will cover linens and bedding provided in Oak Hall, dinner, and the entire overnight component. To sign up for the Triton Overnight Experience, please visit our website and click the New Student Programs Website Triton Overnight Experience Registration page. *This overnight experience is not mandatory if interested in attending the June 3 or June 24 NSO session date.

PARENTS, FAMILY MEMBERS, AND GUEST ORIENTATION FEES Orientation Fee / Meals There is no additional fee for parents’ and family members’ participation. PARENT AND FAMILY ORIENTATION EXPERIENCE Orientation is designed to help both families and students understand resources, opportunities, polices, and offices that will guide you for the next few years. The support and encouragement you provide will be enhanced if you have a clear understanding of the educational and social opportunities here at UMSL and your role during this important time of self-discovery for your student. Many of the activities offered during the orientation session are open to both families and students. A separate schedule includes several informational sessions for family members only, while the individual academic advising session and small group discussions are for students only. During Orientation, families will have an opportunity to meet and talk with other families of new students, administrators, and deans during a reception. For many, this will be your first experience enrolling a child in college, while others are “seasoned” veterans. Regardless, the interaction among families during Orientation continues to be a favorite UMSL memory.

TUITION AND FEES

SUMMARY OF CHARGES

SSO ID

During your Orientation session, you will finalize your course registration and class schedule, and attend a Money Matters session. During this session, the Cashier’s Office will highlight the responsibilities and general payment information for your tuition and fees, discuss the process on how to pay and set up an Authorized Payer, and navigate through the MyView portal to preview a summary of the financial charges. The charges will represent the cost of the hours in which you have enrolled, room and board, and additional services (e.g., financial aid, scholarships, and any additional fees). The Money Matters session will provide valuable information and access to staff members from Financial Aid and the Cashier’s Office. The goal is to help provide students and their families a greater understanding of the financial landscape as they navigate their college career.

A condensed summary of charges is given below. The total may vary according to the individual academic program, which may include lab fees or other charges. We encourage you to visit our UMSL Fee Estimator page to provide you with an estimate on the total cost of attendance, located online at: www.umsl.edu/cashiers/tuition-fees/fee-estimator.html.

MULTICULTURAL STUDENTS

LIVING ON CAMPUS

www.umsl.edu/~mvs/ and www.umsl.edu/veterans/ UMSL has a strong military heritage and is proud to have graduated thousands of veterans. The Department of Military and Veterans Studies was created in 2013 to improve on our already-great tradition. The mission of the Department of Military and Veterans Studies is to enable success for current and future veterans on campus and to create a researched-based curriculum for students who are interested in studying the veteran experience. Also, the UMSL Veterans Center (211 Clark Hall) exists to assist veterans in their transition from military to campus life. It is a one-stop resource center, staffed by student veterans and veteran volunteers, committed to facilitating and coordinating the overall integration of veterans into the UMSL academic community. The UMSL Veterans Center is UMSL Veterans serving UMSL Veterans! During the Orientation programs there will be a welcoming session for you to meet veteran students and faculty and jumpstart your UMSL Connection.

The Office of Multicultural Student Services (MSS) strives to create a strong inclusive community amongst students, faculty, and staff that personifies respect, accountability and acceptance, while supporting and empowering students to achieve degree completion. You will be provided with comprehensive support services to meet the unique needs of a diverse student population that will: foster a sense of belonging and academic achievement; promote student accountability, self-development and goal setting; provide networking opportunities with the internal and external campus community; and facilitate cultural awareness/ diversity activities for the campus community. The goals of the MSS office include: impacting student learning and development, promoting student engagement, facilitating persistence, cultivating student success, and creating cultural awareness and acceptance.

Residential Life and Housing www.umsl.edu/ reslife/ Living on campus is an integral part of your transition to UMSL. With multiple housing options on campus, living on campus offers minute walks to classes, and countless opportunities to make new friends and build relationships.

Army and Air Force ROTC Students have an opportunity to continue UMSL’s military heritage by participating in an ROTC program. Army ROTC in partnership with Washington University http://rotc.wustl.edu, (314) 935-5521 Military Science offers a general military-subject curriculum. The curriculum includes elective courses that provide a combination of academics and important hand-on training. There are two-year and four-year programs offered for both men and women who desire to entry into Active Army, Army Reserve or Army National Guard as a commissioned officer. Air Force ROTC in partnership with St. Louis University http://parks.slu.edu/current-students/studentorganizations/afrotc-207, (314) 977-8227 Air Force ROTC is also a military-subject curriculum that teaches military education, aerospace history, leadership, management and international studies. Students can take freshman and sophomore classes without commitment if they are unsure if they wish to commit to the Air Force. If you are a veteran, service member, or are utilizing veteran education benefits, please join the Department of Military and Veteran Studies for a welcome session during your Orientation session. On the registration site, please click on Student Veteran box to indicate your status. This will allow us to provide more details regarding this welcoming session at Orientation and provide additional resources for our veteran students. 12

We would like to welcome you to a morning reception at Orientation prior to the welcome session. On the TROF registration site, please click on the MSS box to indicate your status if you are a recipient listed below. LANGUAGE PLACEMENT EXAM A student who is not a native speaker and who has not begun language study at UMSL, but who believes that he or she can demonstrate the requisite proficiency level in French, German, or Spanish to test out of a semester or more of language may take a language placement test. Back credit, free of charge, is available to students who place into the second, third or fourth semester language course and complete the course with a satisfactory grade. Up to 13 credit hours of back credit may be earned, but a placement test score is required to begin the process. Students who have already earned advanced credit for language courses are not eligible for back credit courses they have already taken but are welcome to take the placement test to determine if they are truly ready for university level language beyond their advanced placement level. Please visit umsl.edu/orientation (click on the Placement Testing information link) for more information. If you plan to take a language during your first semester and feel that you may be able to test out of any language courses, please complete the Language Placement examination outlined at the link above BEFORE attending your Orientation date.

The Residential Life and Housing halls are designed to make the first-year experience as smooth and fun as possible. Living on campus allows students the opportunity to get to know many different kinds of people. Learning to live with other students is as much a part of the college education as anything one will learn in the classroom. Students shouldn’t fear the idea of roommates, either. Students should keep an open mind and learn to respect one another.

Campus living offers the opportunity to make new friends and learn about yourself and others. It also offers unmatched convenience to classes,

other campus locations, and

hundreds of events to attend.

All of our housing costs such as meal plans and room charges are placed on the university student account, just like tuition. This relieves the stresses of paying rent every month, collecting money from roommates, maintenance of a house or apartment, and students cannot beat the ease of getting to classes. There are a variety of meal options that include a meal plan or apartment meal plan that allows the flexibility to eat on campus or still cook in the convenience of your own kitchen.

Wondering what Oak Hall and University Meadows oncampus living options look like? Arrive early to Orientation and participate in a tour of our South Campus on-campus living options. Take time to see the facilities, programs, amenities, and learn from current residents and staff about the unbeatable benefits of what living on campus can offer our students. Check in at the Millennium Student Center 2nd Floor to receive your nametag and materials, take your photo for your UMSL ID card, and then visit the On-Campus Living Tours station. Make sure to arrive by 8:00 am in order to see a full tour of Oak Hall and/or University Meadows. Last tour will leave at 8:30 am. For more information about on campus living, please visit their our websites listed above. We encourage students who are considering living on campus, to sign up as soon as you can to guarantee your housing location. There is no deadline to sign up for on campus housing, but we recommend by the end of May. Over the summer all housing will be finalized and to confirm the housing verify in MyView. Be sure to check your UMSL email as all communication regarding move-in day process, what to bring, room assignment and roommate information. In addition, this will allow you to follow up with any questions about housing with the actual offices during your visit at Orientation.

For sophomore and upperclassmen students seeking a more independent living option, UMSL has several options. Sorority and Fraternity housing and the International House are located on Natural Bridge. Mansion Hill Apartments and University Meadows Student Village offer the apartment style housing some students desire. Residential Life & Housing and University Meadows are excited to welcome you to campus and become your new home! Living on campus your first-year is an amazing experience, and we are here to help you in that transition. UMSL has many housing options that complement your major, academic goals, or interests.
