ENDOWED FUNDS

SUPPORTING SCHOLARSHIPS AND PROGRAMS as of August 2016 1

THE IMPACT OF ENDOWED FUNDS

Cherly Sam and Donna Green at the 26th Alumni Reception and Awards

University of Maryland University College (UMUC) is grateful to its alumni and friends who generously support the university through charitable gifts. Those who contribute to UMUC’s endowment ensure that the university will continue to offer high-quality academic programs and opportunities for lifelong learning. Endowed funds are particularly powerful because they deliver a perpetual source of funding. Most of the university’s endowed funds provide much-needed scholarships to students in the United States and around the world. Endowed funds also ensure that UMUC will be able to continue to provide academic programs to students when and where they need them. In addition, endowments help fund faculty chairs, provide student services, meet equipment and library needs, and support the university’s valuable art collections, including the Maryland Artist Collection and the Art of China. Funds can also be designated to address areas of highest priority at the university. Your decision to establish an endowed fund is a decision to invest in the future by making a real difference in the lives of UMUC students today.

ESTABLISHING A FUND An endowed gift is made with the intention to preserve the principal in perpetuity and can have a profound effect on future generations of UMUC students, faculty, and staff. You may make a gift of any amount to any of our current endowed funds, or, with a minimum gift of $25,000, you may establish a personal endowed fund at UMUC. Options are available to allow you to reach the $25,000 minimum over time. You may name your fund to recognize your contribution or to honor or pay tribute to a loved one or mentor. In addition, you may establish an endowed chair with a gift of $1.5 million. Contributions can be made annually, semiannually, quarterly, or monthly. You may establish the fund in several ways: by contributing cash or securities, creating a planned gift such as an annuity or charitable remainder trust, or making a bequest in your will. The use and purpose of the endowed gift is documented by the execution of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between you (as the donor), UMUC, and the UMUC Foundation. Once established, your endowed fund will be used exclusively for the purpose outlined in the MOU, according to your philanthropic intentions. Endowed funds are unique—the entire gift is invested. UMUC’s endowment, which is managed by the University System of Maryland Foundation separately from the university’s general operating funds, is broadly diversified across a number of investment strategies to generate returns so that distributions can be made, to preserve capital as adjusted for inflation, and to perform in the top 25 percent of institutional investors. Each year, a portion (currently between 4 and 5 percent) of the fund’s market value is awarded for the purposes the donor designated. Any additional earnings are reinvested back into the principal to ensure growth, extending the fund’s power far into the future.
