United Scenic Artists represents the lighting designer for this production.

In this witty and revelatory one-man show starring Scott Bakula as President Abraham Lincoln, Mister Lincoln—as the President preferred to be called—shares stories of himself during some of our country’s most important historical events. From his own personal perspective, first as a prairie lawyer and anti-slavery advocate in Illinois, to later in Washington as president of the United States, when he signs the Emancipation Proclamation and becomes the liberator, this insightful play leans on Lincoln’s own brilliant language to reveal surprising aspects of the life of one of our nation’s greatest presidents.
A funny ThinG Happened On The Way To The Forum
By Burt Shevelove, Larry GelBart, & Stephen Sondheim
It’s a comedy tonight in Sondheim’s zany, hysterical, Tony Award-winning musical romp. In one of the greatest musical comedies of all time, three households reside next to each other in ancient Rome. Just outside their doors, the exploits of a quick-thinking Roman slave, a braggart soldier, a beautiful courtesan, a lovesick young man and others devolve into uproarious chaos in a fast-paced, witty and monumental escapade. With mistaken identities, wily ruses, madcap chases, a love story, and a happy ending of course, A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum’s audacious and irreverent spectacle has something for everyone.
What I did this summer . . .
Our students’ education in theatre doesn’t end when classes do! This past summer, many of our theatre students had opportunities to learn and gain real-world experience before coming back to UMW Theatre. Check out what they’ve been up to!
Amelia Emory ’24 spent her summer broadening her performance skills and taking tap lessons at BalletNova Center for Dance in Falls Church, Va. She had never taken tap lessons before and had fun learning something new!
Matt Carroll ’25 worked as a Stage Crew Technical Apprentice at the Santa Fe Opera. He worked backstage on five world-class operas and performed daily scenic changeovers to prepare the stage for the following night’s performance.
Carroll
Joel Lamonth ’27 worked in the UMW Theatre scene shop assisting with the build the set for Twelve Angry Jurors with associate professor of theatre, Michael Benson and scene shop foreman, Kenny Horning.
Martha Stitt ’25 worked with the front of house team at The Lost Colony in the Outer Banks, NC. She gained valuable experience ushering, working in sales, and managing the front of house. We are excited for her to share what she learned!
Blaise Wingold ’25 worked as the Communications Support Specialist for the Science Museum of Virginia. He worked on their social media platforms, outreach, and public relations. He also made some wonderful connections across the arts and culture scene. He will share his experiences and knowledge from this summer to help UMW Theatre in his role as interactive marketing assistant on our student staff.
Emma Lehman ’25 spent the summer interning with Virginia Children’s Theatre. She helped lead various summer camps for kids of all ages and specialized in developing and leading choreography. Emma is the associate choreographer for Nunsense in partial fulfillment of her senior project this fall.

She gained valuable experience in audience services and learned more about creating accessible environments and Indigenous experiences.

Rylie Vann ’25 worked as the assistant lighting designer for Signature Theatre and Wolf Trap’s Broadway in the Park. She had the honor of lighting local DC actors as well as Broadway stars Laura Benanti and Jordan Fisher.
Isabel Carter ‘26 completed an internship at First Alaskans Institute working at the Sitka Fine Arts Camp as a technical theatre intern. She worked in the variety of their theatre spaces and taught young campers about technical theatre.
Rachel Piotrowski ‘25 worked as an assistant stage manager for a production of Oklahoma with Summer Theatre Program in Springfield, Va. She worked with kids ranging from rising 8th graders to high school graduates.
Cameron Zakreski ’25 worked as a walker at the Ford’s Theatre Gala. He got to work alongside some local DC actors and Broadway stars, including Josh Groban and Bernadette Peters helping record blocking and standing in for performers during tech.
Cora Denny ’25 worked as a walker at the Ford’s Theatre Gala as well and also helped with youth auditions for their upcoming production of A Christmas Carol, gaining valuable connections and applicable real-world experience.
