Matilda was first commissioned and produced by the Royal Shakespeare Company and premiered at The Courtyard Theatre, Stratford-upon-Avon, England on 9 November 2010. It transferred to the Cambridge Theatre in the West End of London on 25 October 2011 and received its US premiere at the Shubert Theatre, Broadway, USA on 4 March 2013.

Ever wonder about what happens to the students you’ve come to know in Klein Theatre after they graduate? Whether it be on the stage, backstage, in the box office, running a theatre, or in a variety of other professional endeavors, this is our way of letting you know what some of them have been up to since leaving their UMW home . . .
Erick Boscana ’20 worked a variety of short term and over hire positions in the DC area after graduating with a degree in theatre. He worked as a prop artisan for Wolf Trap Opera’s Summer ’21 season and a carpenter for Shakespeare Theatre’s Once Upon A One More Time before accepting a full time position as a carpenter for Arena Stage. While at Arena, he has built upon the skills he learned at UMW and expanded his skillset to include rigging, automation, and hydraulics. His favorite productions at Arena have been Angels in America and American Prophet. While at UMW, he was a scene shop assistant, the assistant to the scenic designer for Medea, Merrily We Roll Along, Fun Home, and scenic designer for Much Ado About Nothing
Tommy Kelleher ’22 has been working in Washington, DC, as an over hire carpenter for Studio Theatre, Signature Theatre, and the Shakespeare Theatre Company where he has recently accepted a full-time staff carpenter position. He is very excited to continue working with STC and helping build and load in productions like Evita, the Beatles inspired As You Like It, The Lehman Trilogy, and especially MacBeth with Ralph Fiennes and Indira Varma. Some of Tommy’s favorite productions he’s worked on since graduating have been Which Way to the Stage at Signature Theatre, Much Ado About Nothing, King Lear, and The Jungle—all with the Shakespeare Theatre Company. While at UMW, he appeared in The Country Wife, Fun Home, The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time, and The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee.
Savannah Lunger ’19 completed an internship in the education department of The Kennedy Center after graduating with a degree in theatre and a minor in arts administration. In 2020, Savannah was hired as a theatre teacher in Arlington, Virginia, where she taught (virtually, then in-person) for three years. Savannah is currently working as the assistant director of Camp Carysbrook, a summer camp in Southwest Virginia, where she uses her arts administration background to coordinate educational programming as well as leadership development, and community outreach initiatives. While at UMW, she worked as the communications assistant and was the assistant to the production supervisor for Merrily We Roll Along and Fun Home and appeared on stage in The Mystery of Edwin Drood
Shaun McBride ’22 earned his BA in theatre in 2022 and his MEd in PK-12 theatre education in 2023 from Mary Washington. While on campus, Shaun was very involved in UMW Theatre where he served as both the audience services assistant and as a box office assistant. Shaun served as the assistant to the director for The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time and appeared in Much Ado About Nothing and The Rocky Horror Show In fulfillment of his senior project, Shaun directed James IJames’ White in Studio 115. He continues to pursue his passion of theatre by teaching theatre arts to middle school students at Edward E. Drew Jr. Middle School in Stafford, Virginia, where he is building a new program. Every day, Shaun puts into practice the lessons, ideas, and inspiration he gained from UMW Theatre.
After graduating with a degree in theatre with minors in musical theatre and arts administration, Riley Salazar ‘22 spent the summer in Interlochen, Michigan, working as the patron services administrative assistant at Interlochen Center for the Arts. Upon her return to Virginia, she spent some time working in the box office at Ford’s Theatre and made an appearance in their production of The Trip to Bountiful. Riley now works full time as a box office associate at Signature Theatre. During her time at UMW, Riley appeared onstage in Merrily We Roll Along, Ordinary Days, The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time, and The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, worked in the box office, and as the department’s recruitment assistant. Riley served as vice president of Alpha Psi Omega and the play curator for Studio 115.
Sasha Zabela ’18 graduated with degrees in theatre and creative writing. After graduation, she worked with DC’s IATSE Local 772 (Wardrobe) on The Washington Ballet’s production of Sleeping Beauty. She then traveled to Colorado to work at Creede Repertory Theatre before setting sail on Celebrity EDGE as the ship’s second wardrobe specialist/entertainment administrator overseeing six shows in three venues. Her high seas adventure was cut short, like many others, because of the pandemic. When theatre was starting to return, The Washington Ballet hired her as a wardrobe assistant. Sasha’s days (and evenings) are spent altering costumes and working backstage running dressing tracks, wherever The Washington Ballet is dancing. While at Mary Washington, Sasha was doing much the same on most main stage productions including: Avenue Q, The Mystery of Edwin Drood, Macbeth, and her senior project, Medea.

Ariana Adamek ’25 is a theatre and anthropology double major. In Klein, she played Punk Girl, et al. in The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time. She worked as the light board operator for Agatha Christie’s Murder on the Orient Express, the fly crew for Pride and Prejudice, and the second assistant stage manager for The Rocky Horror Show. She works as the archives assistant for the department and is a recipient of the Albert Klein Memorial Scholarship. Maddie Baylor ’24 is a theatre and English double major. In Klein, she is playing Miss Honey in Roald Dahl’s Matilda the Musical and has played Mrs. Hubbard in Agatha Christie’s Murder on the Orient Express, Jane and Miss de Bourgh in Pride and Prejudice, and Sandra in The Play That Goes Wrong, to name a few. She works as the communications assistant for the department and is the recipient of the Debby C. Klein Theatre Scholarship, the Fred Winer Scholarship, and the UMW Theatre Scholarship.
Emmy Beach ’27 is a first year student with intent to major in theatre. In Klein, she is playing Matilda in Roald Dahl’s Matilda the Musical. She is a recipient of the UMW Theatre Scholarship.
Madeline Berger ’25 is a theatre and music major with a minor in digital studies. In Klein, she has worked as the assistant to the music director and the sound engineer for The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee and The Rocky Horror Show. She has also worked as the sound engineer for Men on Boats and as the assistant to the sound designer for Agatha Christie’s Murder on the Orient Express. She is a recipient of the Keith Belli Scholarship in Theatre.
Madeline Brunt ’24 is a biology major with a practical ethics minor. She is the president of the Performing Arts Company and has held that role since 2022. She is the recipient of the Vicky Nichols Wilder ‘80 and Florence Overley Ridderhof ‘50 Scholarship in Dance.
Carter Bussey ’25 is an applied physics and geology major. He has worked on construction of The Play That Goes Wrong, The Rocky Horror Show, Men on Boats, Pride and Prejudice, and Agatha Christie’s Murder on the Orient Express, to name a few. He works as a scene shop assistant for the department and is a recipient of the UMW Theatre Scholarship.
Matt Carroll ’25 is a theatre major. In Klein, he worked as an electrician for Nickel and Dimed, The Play That Goes Wrong, The Rocky Horror Show, and Men on Boats. He was the light board operator for Julius Caesar and worked as a member of the run crew for The Play That Goes Wrong and The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time. He works as a scene shop assistant for the department and is the recipient of the Eastman-Mullins Scholarship for Theatre and the UMW Theatre Scholarship.
Maddie Chin ’27 is a first year student with intent to major in theatre. She is currently working as the second assistant stage manager for Roald Dahl’s Matilda the Musical. She works as the production management assistant for the department and is a recipient of the UMW Theatre Scholarship.
Mason Michael Clark ’24 is a theatre and physics double major with a musical theatre minor. In Klein, he played Colonel Arbuthnot in Agatha Christie’s Murder on the Orient Express, Mr. Bingley & Mary in Pride and Prejudice, Jonathan in The Play That Goes Wrong, Octavius in Julius Caesar, and Ed in The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time. He works as a box office assistant for the department and is a recipient of the Barbara Crickenberger Hall ‘69 Theatre Scholarship.
Angelica Dierling ’27 is a first year student with intent to major in theatre and education. In Klein, she has worked as an electrician for Roald Dahl’s Matilda the Musical and Agatha Christie’s Murder on the Orient Express. She also assisted in the construction of both sets and is a recipient of the UMW Theatre Scholarship.
Seth Drenning ’24 is a theatre major with an arts administration minor. In Klein, he played Hercule Poirot in Agatha Christie’s Murder on the Orient Express, Darcy in Pride & Prejudice, Max in The Play That Goes Wrong, and Mark Antony in Julius Caesar. He works as the financial assistant for the department and is a recipient of Keith Belli Scholarship in Theatre, the Polly Updegraff Champ ‘61 Scholarship, and the Joella C. and Michael D. Killian Theatre Scholarship.
Amelia Emory ‘24 is a theatre major with an arts administration and musical theatre minor. In Klein, she is playing Tommy in Roald Dahl’s Matilda the Musical and has played Frank Goodman and Mr. Asa in Men on Boats, Joan & Others in Nickel and Dimed, and served as the sound engineer for The Play That Goes Wrong She is the interactive marketing assistant for the department and is the recipient of the Marceline Weatherly Morris ‘50 Musical Theatre Scholarship.
Katherine Farmer ‘26 is a theatre major. In Klein, she worked as a carpenter for The Play That Goes Wrong and The Rocky Horror Show and was a scene painter for Men on Boats and Pride and Prejudice. She works as a scene shop assistant for the department and is a recipient of the UMW Theatre Scholarship.
Kyleigh Friel ‘25 is a psychology major. In Klein, she plays Mrs. Wormwood in Roald Dahl’s Matilda the Musical and played Magenta in The Rocky Horror Show. She is a recipient of the UMW Theatre Scholarship.
Nathaniel Huff ‘24 is a theatre major with an arts administration and English Literature double minor. In Klein, he played Lucius & Cinna the Poet in Julius Caesar and Dennis in The Play That Goes Wrong. He works as the recruitment assistant for the department and is the recipient of the Lee Wingate Pappandreou ’40 Scholarship, the Susan Mulholland Breedin ‘86 Scholarship, and the Nina G. Bushnell Scholarship.
Emily Anne Kile ‘24 is a theatre and English double major. In Klein, she is playing Nigel in Roald Dahl’s Matilda the Musical, and Countess Andrenyi in Agatha Christie’s Murder on the Orient Express, to name a few. She works as the special projects assistant for the department and is a recipient of the Keith Belli Memorial Scholarship in Theatre and the Sonja Dragomamovic Haydar Scholarship in Dance.
Alex Lagon ‘24 is a theatre major with a musical theatre minor. In Klein, she is playing Mrs. Phelps in Roald Dahl’s Matilda the Musical, and she has played Dunn in Men on Boats, Annie in The Play That Goes Wrong, and Casca in Julius Caesar. She is the recipient of the June Davis McCormick ‘49 Scholarship.
Emma Lehman ‘25 is a theatre major. In Klein, she is working as the assistant to the choreographer in Roald Dahl’s Matilda the Musical and previously for Pride and Prejudice and The Rocky Horror Show, and played John Colton Sumner in Men on Boats. She works as a scene shop assistant for the department and is the recipient of the Claudia Moore Read Scholarship in Dance.
Peyton McCarthy ‘25 is a theatre major with an arts administration minor. In Klein, she played Mary Debenham in Agatha Christie’s Murder on the Orient Express and worked as the assistant stage manager for The Play That Goes Wrong. She works as a box office assistant in the department and is a recipient of the UMW Theatre Scholarship.
Giannii Marshall ‘26 is a theatre major with musical theatre minor. In Klein, she worked as a Head Usher for The Play That Goes Wrong, The Rocky Horror Show, and Pride and Prejudice. She is currently the House Manager for Roald Dahl’s Matilda the Musical and a recipient of the UMW Theatre Scholarship and the UMW Performing Arts For The Community Scholarship.
Nicole Merriweather ‘24 is a theatre major with a business administration minor. In Klein, she was the house manager for Agatha Christie’s Murder on the Orient Express, Men on Boats, and The Play That Goes Wrong. She also helped in constructing the set for both The Play That Goes Wrong and The Rocky Horror Show. She is the recipient of the Frances Rodgers Bryant ‘68 Theatre Scholarship.
Mason “MO” Oberle ‘24 is a theatre major and English creative writing double major. In Klein, he is playing Mr. Wormwood in Roald Dahl’s Matilda the Musical and has played Samuel Ratchett in Agatha Christie’s Murder on the Orient Express, Brad Majors in The Rocky Horror Show, and Uncle Terry, et al. in The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time. He works as a box office assistant in the department and is a recipient of the UMW Theatre Scholarship.
Rachel Piotrowski ‘26 is a theatre major with an arts administration and musical theatre minor. In Klein, she is an ensemble member in Roald Dahl’s Matilda the Musical and has played Wickham and Servants in Pride and Prejudice. She works as the advancement assistant for the department, and is a recipient of the Barbara Crickenberger Hall ‘69 Theatre Scholarship.
Nikki Rizzo ‘25 is a theatre major with an English literature minor. In Klein, she is playing Alice in Roald Dahl’s Matilda the Musical and played George Young Bradley in Men on Boats. She works as a costume shop assistant for the department and is the recipient of the Alexander W. Holsinger Scholarship.
Mary Robinson ‘24 is a theatre major with minors in arts administration and musical theatre. In Klein, she has worked as a carpenter for Men on Boats, Pride and Prejudice, and Agatha Christie’s Murder on the Orient Express. Mary is also devising a sensory-friendly performance of Roald Dahl’s Matilda the Musical. She is a recipient of the UMW Performing Arts for the Community Scholarship.
Niko Salinas ‘24 is a theatre and English creative writing double major. In Klein, he is playing Sergei & Children’s Entertainer in Roald Dahl’s Matilda the Musical and has played Monsieur Bouc in Agatha Christie’s Murder on the Orient Express, and Trevor in The Play That Goes Wrong, to name a few. James Shepard ‘24 is a theatre major. In Klein, he played Head Waiter in Agatha Christie’s Murder on the Orient Express and Stagehand in The Play That Goes Wrong. Martha Stitt ‘25 is a theatre major with an arts administration and musical theatre minor. Rylie Vann ‘25 is a theatre and communications & digital studies double major. In Klein, she was the assistant lighting designer for Agatha Christie’s Murder on the Orient Express and will be working as the co-lighting designer for Twelfth Night. Blaise Wingold ‘25 is a theatre and commutations & digital studies double major. In Klein, he is playing Michael Wormwood in Roald Dahl’s Matilda the Musical. He has played Michel the Conductor in Agatha Christie’s Murder on the Orient Express and Robert in The Play That Goes Wrong. He is a recipient of the UMW Theatre Scholarship.
Rebecca Yee ‘25 is a theatre major with an arts administration minor. In Klein, she was the stage manager of Men on Boats and is currently working as the stage manager on Roald Dahl’s Matilda the Musical. She is a recipient of the UMW Theatre Scholarship and the Keith Belli Scholarship in Theatre.
Shadwick Yoder ‘25 is a political science major with a minor in environmental sustainability. In Klein, he has been a member of the stage management staff for The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time, Julius Caesar, and Pride and Prejudice, and he worked as a crew member for The Rocky Horror Show. In Studio 115, he was the stage manager for Stop Kiss. He is a recipient of the UMW Theatre Scholarship.
Henry Zeigler ‘27 is is a first year student from Lovettsville, Va. His favorite roles at Woodgrove High School included Plankton in SpongeBob! The Musical, Wadsworth in Clue, and Shakespeare in Something Rotten. He is a recipient of the UMW Theatre Scholarship.
