Ever wonder about what happens to the students you’ve come to know in Klein Theatre after they graduate? Whether it be on the stage, backstage, in the box office, running a theatre, or in a variety of other professional endeavors, this is our way of letting you know what some of them have been up to since leaving their UMW home . . .

After graduating with a degree in theatre, Julia Cox ’23 began working part-time in the box office at the Shakespeare Theatre Company in D.C. Now that she has transitioned to full-time at the theatre, Julia is beginning to pursue her passion for directing in the greater Washington, D.C., area. While at UMW, Julia directed Stop Kiss in Studio 115, and assistant directed for The Rocky Horror Show, Julius Caesar, and Much Ado About Nothing. Julia also worked in the box office and was on the stage management team for The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time.

Right after graduating with honors in theatre, Oscar León ’23 accepted a position as the membership assistant at Arena Stage, in Washington, D.C. At Arena, he works to provide a great experience for members and donors. Aside from member stewardship and database record maintenance, Oscar also works supporting trustees and major donors directly. He continues to take voice lessons and acting classes in D.C. While at UMW Theatre, Oscar was the advancement assistant and the president of the Eta Eta chapter of Alpha Psi Omega, the national theatre honor society. He appeared on stage in The Rocky Horror Show, Pride and Prejudice, Fun Home, Nickel and Dimed, and Much Ado About Nothing

Erin Schoff ’23 is the creative arts coordinator for the Campagna Center in Alexandria, Va., where she oversees performing arts, S.T.E.M., and youth sports enrichment programs at 13 afterschool sites throughout the city. She also coordinates the creative arts curriculum that is implemented throughout the sites. As a part of her job at the Campagna Center, she serves as resident stage manager and production manager for both children’s theatre and theatre for young audiences productions. While at UMW Erin spent time in the management office as the production management assistant, and was on stage management teams for several shows including The Country Wife, The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (abridged) [revised], Much Ado About Nothing, Nickel and Dimed, The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, The Play That Goes Wrong, and Men on Boats.

Taylor Kiechlin ’17 is an AEA Stage Manager, currently working as assistant stage manager on the world premiere musical A Hanukkah Carol at Round House Theatre. Since graduating, she spent time at the Williamstown Theatre Festival and Bristol Riverside Theatre, and eventually settled in the greater D.C. area, where she works consistently at many of the region’s more prominent houses, including Round House Theatre, Signature Theatre, The Kennedy Center, Ford’s Theatre, Studio Theatre, Folger Theatre, Woolly Mammoth Theatre Company, and Shakespeare Theatre Company. While at UMW, Taylor served at the communications assistant, was seen onstage in Sunday in the Park with George, and worked on the stage management teams for nine mainstage productions, including Spring Awakening, Always…Patsy Cline, Lady Windermere’s Fan, Noises Off, Frozen, Tartuffe, The Mystery of Edwin Drood, and Steel Magnolias.

Shannon Nichols ’23 has been living and working in the D.C. metropolitan area as a theatrical electrician since graduating with majors in business & accounting and theatre and a minor in arts administration. Shannon has been a follow spot operator for several productions at Shakespeare Theatre Company, including Evita, As You Like It, The Lehman Trilogy and most recently, The Comedy of Errors. While at UMW, Shannon was the accounting assistant in the management office, stage managed Pride and Prejudice, The Rocky Horror Show, The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time, and was on the stage management team for Julius Caesar Shannon was on the run crew for The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (abridged) [revised], served as a carpenter for The Play That Goes Wrong, and was the assistant to the sound designer for The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee

Graduating with a theatre major, Callum Devine ’21 continued in the College of Education to earn a master’s degree with a PreK-12 teaching licensure in theatre arts. Callum is now a theatre teacher at Spotsylvania High School, his alma mater. While at UMW, he pursued a variety of experiences to prepare him for teaching, including the run crew for The Country Wife, young company coordinator for Merrily We Roll Along, and UMW Theatre Shop manager for Fun Home (where he met Anne Devine, whom he would marry soon after!)

In the Heights

23

The joyous Tony Award-winning triumph by Lin-Manuel Miranda (Hamilton) and Quiara Alegría Hudes (Daphne’s Dive). Lights up on Washington Heights, NYC where the streets are full of music, and everybody’s got a dream. With the neighborhood on the brink of gentrification, and a life-changing winning lottery ticket somewhere in their midst, the vibrant inhabitants share hope, loss, and love as they plan their futures while cherishing their home. Latin rhythms and hip-hop lyrics infuse “96,000,” “Paciencia y Fe,” “Carnaval del Barrio,” and the title song as this breathtaking celebration of community and culture energetically bursts off the stage with Signature’s trademark immersive style.

Paradise Blue

• May 25 @ 2 PM •

Detroit, 1949. Welcome to Paradise, a jazz club that’s seen better days. Blue, the club’s trumpet-playing owner is ready to leave this town and his family demons behind. But his house band and his best girl have dreams of their own, so when hardboiled widow Silver enters the picture looking for some business and some pleasure, love, lust, and legacy collide in the fight for Paradise. Studio transforms the Victor Shargai theatre into a jazz club for Dominique Morisseau’s (Pipeline, Skeleton Crew) music-filled drama about resilience, self-preservation, and community.

Acknowledging the AcknowledgingLandthe Land

We acknowledge the Native American people who lived along the Fall Line of the Rappahannock River, on whose home we are gathered for this performance. The Manahoac, Rappahannock Tribe and Patawomeck Tribe of Virginia are the Indigenous peoples of this unceded land. We honor their resilience, their fight for rightful recognition and tribal sovereignty, and their connection to the land on which we are grateful to gather, to teach, to learn, and to create theatre.

Legacy Circle

We are ever grateful for those individuals who have endowed scholarships and/or remembered UMW Theatre in their estate planning, creating meaningful legacies for generations of future students.
