Acknowledging the AcknowledgingLandthe Land

As we gather for this performance, we do so on the ancestral homelands of Native American people who lived here along the Fall Line of the Rappahannock River. These were the Indigenous peoples of this unceded land, and their descendants still live here today.

While the Manahoac are lost in the written historical record after 1728 (perhaps having moved south to join their Monacan relatives), the Rappahannock Tribe and the Patawomeck Tribe of Virginia today represent the historical Algonquian-speaking communities who lived along the river from the Fall Line to the Chesapeake Bay. The Rappahannock and Patawomeck were among the nearly three dozen Algonquianspeaking tribes associated with the Powhatan Chiefdom when the English illegally settled this area in the 17th century.

The Patawomeck Indian Tribe of Virginia was officially recognized by the Commonwealth of Virginia in 2010 and is based in today’s Stafford County. The Patawomeck Tribe, led by Chief Charles Bullock, has 2,300 members, 80% who live within ten miles of the historic village of Patawomeck, just north of Potomac Creek, a tidal tributary of the Potomac River that flows through King George and Stafford counties. The Tribe is active in preserving its history, sharing its culture, and revitalizing the Algonquian language. To learn more about the Patawomeck, visit patawomeckindiantribeofvirginia.org

Chief Anne Richardson leads the Rappahannock Tribe, which was federally recognized in 2018. Rappahannock citizens are focused on economic development, strengthening and sustaining their communities, protecting the environment, and preserving and sharing the contributions of their people to Virginia and the Nation. Their annual Harvest Festival and Powwow reflects the traditions of the Rappahannocks over the thousands of years they have lived in this watershed. To learn more about the Rappahannocks, visit rappahannocktribe.org.

We honor the resilience of the Indigenous people of this region, their fight for rightful recognition and tribal sovereignty, and we acknowledge their deep connection to the land on which we are grateful to gather, to teach, to learn, and to make theatre.

What I did this summer . . .

Our students’ education in theatre doesn’t end when classes do! This past summer, many of our theatre students had opportunities to learn and gain real-world experience before coming back to UMW Theatre. Check out what they’ve been up to!

Maddie Baylor ’24 worked as a walker in rehearsals for the Ford’s Theatre Annual Gala in Washington, D.C. learning the routes that performers would be traveling, marking locations, and recording blocking.

Emily Ann Kile ’24 worked as a walker at the Ford’s Theatre Annual Gala in Washington, D.C. She also attended the National Stage Combat Workshop, where she trained in unarmed stage combat, broadsword, and rapier and dagger.

Alex Lagon ’24 returned to Live Arts in Charlottesville to teach the Fractured Fairytales camp and serve as a counselor for the Shakespeare Showcase camp. She worked with campers ranging in ages from 6-16 and introduced them to a wide variety of theatre skills that can be applied in their daily lives.

Nikki Rizzo ’25 played Sue Snell in Carrie The Musical at Cadence Theatre in Richmond, VA.

Mary Robinson ’25 worked with Kenny Horning and Bridgette Dennett, building much of the set for UMW Theatre’s production of Murder on the Orient Express. She also attended the Kennedy Center’s Leadership Exchange in Arts and Disability to research accessible arts events in preparation for her senior project developing UMW Theatre’s sensory-friendly performance of Matilda

Peyton McCarthy ’25 served as a box office associate for Shenandoah Summer Music Theatre at Shenandoah University, working alongside other students interested in arts administration and theatre and developed administrative and customer service skills.

Nikki Rizzo Oscar León, Maddie Baylor, Emily Kile, Mina Sollars at the 2023 Ford’s Theatre Gala Peyton McCarthy

Amelia Emory ’24 worked as a summer camp counselor with Educational theatre Company. She worked with campers from kindergarten to second grade, exploring their acting tools and encouraging a love for theatre.

Nate Huff ’24 worked as the ticket services intern at Wolf Trap Foundation for the Performing Arts. He assisted in managing ticket sales between three venues while learning the ins and outs of Wolf Trap’s ticketing system, ProVenue.

Rylie Vann ’25 worked as the lighting designer and light board operator for West End Academy of Dance’s Spring Recital A Mermaid’s Tale and worked as the assistant lighting designer for In the Heights at Pennsylvania Shakespeare Festival at DeSales University.

Mason Clark ’24, Megan Dinneen ’24, Seth Drenning ’24, Amelia Emory ’24, Nathaniel C. Huff ’24, James Lau ’24, Emma Magner ’24, MO Oberle ’24, Percy Sampson ’24, Martha Stitt ’25, David Stout ’24, and Blaise Wingold ’25 were in the inaurgural cohort of students for UMW Theatre in London, a three week adventure in one of the most historic theatre cities in the world. Students visited Stratford-uponAvon, attended 17 productions and immersed themselves in the rich history of London under the guidance of Marc Williams, assistant professor of theatre.

Remembering Debby Klein, 1929-2023

Words cannot describe the impact of Debby Klein on theatre at Mary Washington and on the greater community beyond our campus. Her support took many forms— financial, intellectual, emotional, and hands on— and she touched thousands of lives in the quiet, yet powerful, way she got things done. When Debby died this past May at 94, the loss resonated to the very heart of our program.

When her husband, Al Klein, joined the dramatic arts faculty in 1952, Debby jumped in—designing, building, and painting scenery, sewing costumes, and supporting students in many ways. Debby and Al’s daughters, Becky and Judy, grew up in what we now know as Klein Theatre—renamed for their father after he died suddenly of a heart attack in 1970.

Debby was a cultural icon in the Fredericksburg region, building this community through her many talents, her love of creative expression, her tenacious advocacy, and her supreme belief that the arts could change lives. For us, she was a loyal and loving patron, donor, and the very best friend of UMW Theatre for 71 years. Our hearts are broken even as we will forever be blessed by the grace she lovingly bestowed on all of us.

Becky and Judy asked that friends remember Debby through gifts to the scholarships named in honor of their parents, the Albert R. Klein Memorial Scholarship and the Debby C. Klein Theatre Scholarship, both administered by the UMW Foundation. We are grateful for Debby’s many friends who have heeded that call so that Al and Debby’s formidable legacy will be a part of our students’ lives forevermore.

Something Moving: A meditation on Maynard

This timely and poignant world premiere production explores the election of Maynard Jackson, Atlanta’s first Black mayor. Cleage sets the play in present-day Atlanta, but soon the story travels back 50 years as citizens of the city recollect and reflect upon the significance of the once-in-a-lifetime election that turned Atlanta into a progressive example of the New South. Cleage’s unique theatrical voice turns Atlanta into a full-blooded character while allowing her audience to feel what it was like to be part of a true historic moment in the Southern capital city.

Ragtime by Terrence McNally, Lynn Ahrens, & Stephen Flaherty • December 10 @ 2 PM

The triumphant Tony Award-winning musical portrait of America at the turn of the 20th century. The stories of three American families intertwine against the backdrop of a towering slate of historical figures. Together, through a dazzling array of musical styles from the era, they weave a stunning tapestry that reveals both the promise and prejudice of the American experience. In the tradition of Titanic, West Side Story and Into the Woods, Signature reinvents this expansive epic for its trademark intimate space.
