FALL 2013

PRESIDENT’S COMMUNITY NEWSLETTER President’s Message Dear UMW Neighbors, As you may have noticed, we have several exciting projects underway on the Fredericksburg campus that will enhance the UMW experience for our students and benefit the community. While some of these will cause temporary disruptions to traffic flow, they ultimately will provide many dividends. Most apparent, in the middle of campus along College Avenue, we have removed the outdated Chandler Hall academic building. On this site will be constructed a beautiful new campus center and dining facility. The building will have entrances from Ball Circle on the campus side and College Avenue on the neighborhood side, presenting a welcoming face to the community for events and functions. It is anticipated that the center will be completed by fall 2015. We are rapidly completing our new Information Technology Convergence Center, a large academic building adjacent to Simpson Library. This facility will open in the fall of 2014 and will give students in all academic disciplines incredible new learning spaces and a rich array of instructional technology resources. Other projects include a new parking lot on Thornton Street, which will provide additional parking and replace spaces formerly adjacent to Chandler Hall. And, beginning this fall, we will embark on a renovation and expansion project to convert Woodard Campus Center for use by the University’s College of Business. Mercer Hall will be renovated to accommodate the Department of Psychology. Hopefully you have also watched the continual progress by the UMW Foundation within the Eagle Village complex across U.S. 1. The beautiful new Hyatt Place Hotel will be completed in the fall. Major upgrades are transforming the appearance of retail establishments near the front of the property, and many exciting new businesses are moving into Eagle Village. These all bode well for the city’s economic vitality. Thank you for your continued support of the University of Mary Washington. We are fortunate to be located in such a wonderful place as Fredericksburg. Please join us often for events and activities on our campus. Best regards,

Richard V. Hurley President
