Terry Fowler enters his seventh season as head coach of the University of North Alabama women’s basketball team. He became the seventh head coach in the program’s history in March of 2006 and immediately began the process of restoring the Lions’ winning tradition. In his first season, Fowler led UNA to a solid 14-14 mark, which was a nine-win improvement over the school’s 2005-06 record. He also led UNA back to the GSC Tournament for the first time in since 2003. Individually, the Lions’ Amber Rutherford was named GSC East Division Player of the Year and led the NCAA Division II with a 93.7 free throw percentage. UNA went 13-15 the following year, then posted a 15-13 mark in 2009 and finished with a 17-14 record in the 2010 campaign. Those 17 wins were the most by a UNA women’s team since the 1999-00 season. The Lions advanced to the GSC tourney all three seasons while Rutherford successfully defended her national free throw championship in 2008 by hitting 93.6 percent of her foul shots. She finished her career with the NCAA all division record of 92.38 percent, hitting 526 of 570 free throw attempts in four seasons. The 2011 season proved to be a breakout year for Fowler and the Lions. North Alabama advanced to its sixth consecutive Gulf South Conference Tournament after winning the GSC East Divisino with an undefeated league record. The Lions also advanced to the NCAA Division II Tournament for the first time since 1994 and finished the year with a 21-7 mark. 6

UNA produced a 15-13 record during the 2012-13 season and advance to the semi-final round of the GSC Tournament. Fowler enters the 2013 season with a 95-76 record at UNA, including a 186-166 career mark as a head coach. Fowler brought 13 years of coaching experience to UNA when he joined the program in 2006. He had served the previous four seasons as head coach at Spring Hill College in Mobile where he led the school to a 19-13 record in 2005, including a Top 25 national ranking in the NAIA. Fowler previously served as head coach at Spring Hill from 1998-2000 and was then an assistant coach at the University of South Alabama from 2000 to 2002. In all he has 19 years of experience as a collegiate women’s basketball coach. In his first stint as head coach at Spring Hill from 1998-2000, Fowler was named Gulf Coast Athletic Conference Coach of the Year and led the school to its first-ever conference championship with a 23-11 record during the 199900 season. The Badgers ranked No. 1 nationally in free throw percentage, were fourth in three- point percentage and sixth in field goal percentage. In 2000 he was hired as assistant coach at South Alabama and coordinated the Lady Jaguars conditioning, recruiting and scouting and worked with the guards. The program had not had a winning season in 10 years and
had averaged just eight wins per season but in 2001 USA won 13 games and advanced to the first round of the Sun Belt Tournament. The following year South Alabama was 17-11 and had its first winning season in 12 years. The Lady Jaguars were ranked sixth in Division I in scoring defense and ranked second nationally for the fewest turnovers per game. A native of Jackson, Tenn., Fowler earned his bachelor’s degree in business administration from Lane College in 1986 and a master’s degree in sports management from the United States Sports Academy in 1994. Fowler began his collegiate playing career at Lincoln Memorial University, where he played as a freshman
and sophomore. He then played his final two seasons at Lane. As a player at Lane, he was an All- Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference pick as a senior and was a two-time Academic All-SIAC pick. Fowler spent 11 seasons coaching the Lady Badgers. Prior to serving as head coach from 1998-2000, he was an assistant under former head coach James Walker. Upon his return to Spring Hill he led the team to the GCAC conference and tournament championships, which earned them a first-ever birth in the NAIA National Tournament during the 2002-03 season. UNIVERSITY OF NORTH ALABAMA The University of North Alabama, established in 1830 as LaGrange College, became, in 1872, the first state-supported teachers college south of the Ohio Riverand one of the first co-ed colleges in the nation. UNA has developed into a regional university providing quality educational opportunities for students from the three-state region of Alabama, Mississippi and Tennessee. North Alabama’s academic role has expanded through the years. Bachelor’s degrees are offered in majors in the colleges of arts and sciences, business, education and nursing and allied health. Pre-Professional preparation for medicine, dentistry, optometry, podiatry, pharmacy, law, agriculture and forestry, engineering, veterinary medicine, medical technology and other allied health professions is offered. Various master’s degrees are offered in the arts and sciences, edication and business fields. North Alabama was the first major university to offer a four-year degree program in commercial music. Majors have interned in record industry offices in Nashville, New York, Los Angeles, London, Stockholm, and nearby Muscle Shoals. That program has since been expanded with the development of the UNA Entertainment Industry Center and the addition of an entertainment industry management major. UNA is one of 11 schools nationwide offering an undergraduate degree in industrial hygiene. Foreign language, nursing, business, and science students also have opportunities to study abroad. Numerous faculty and staff members hold positions of distinction in various national, regional and state professional organizations. Many have written books and/or published articles in newspaper, magazines and professional journals. The Journal of Legal Economics is published at UNA. Various centers have been established at North Alabama to serve its constituency. Operated by faculty and staff, they give undergraduate and graduate students opportunities for research and public services. These centers include the Occupational and Environmental Health Laboratory. Its scientific research has attracted national and international attention in the health field. The Geographic Research Center, in cooperation with the National Geographic Society, has increased the profile of geography in the state and has opened doors for students to have hands-on participation
in maping and demographics research for various governmental agencies. Science faculty and students teach and study marine biology-related courses at Dauphin Island Sealab near Mobile, Alabama. North Alabama also houses the Northwest Alabama Education Research and Inservice Center, which provides inservice training for elementary and secondary educators in a six-county region. UNA has the only state university-operated kindergarten and grammar school, which affords education students a professional development laboratory experience in teaching. Serving a nine-County region, the Small Business Development Center provides information, counseling and assistance to small businesses or to people planning to start small businesses. The Rare and Endangered Species Research Center personnel are conducting research on several endangered species in the region. The Wellness Research and Service Center studies and develops wellness, exercise, nutrition, stress management, health education counseling and environmental support programs. The University of North Alabama works closely with various southern universities and many local, state and federal agencies on a myriad of projects and activities. Supporting the faculty are the extensive resources of the Collier Library system, which is also a federal records depository. 51
It is computerized and linked into various library loan research networks. Collier Library also houses several collections, including the television and film scripts and other works of actors Dr. George Lindsey and Dr. Ernest Borgnine. UNA has developed a national following in recent years with the development of the George Lindsey/UNA Television and Film Festival, which attracts several industry luminaries to camous. UNA students excel in academics, student activities and athletics. Often they are recognized nationally for their achievements in specific areas. In recent years , football and basketball teams have won national championships. UNA is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. The colleges of business, education and nursing are nationally accredited, while several departments in the College of Arts and Sciences are nationally accredited. The University of North Alabama’s alumni are equally successful. Among them are a Pultizer Prize winner for literature and one for editorial cartooning, two Alabama governors, a Texas governor, numerous members of the U.S. Congress, thousands of educators, national business and industry CEOs and internationally-renowed sculpter, a National Geographic photographer and special assistant to the President of the United States.

FLOWERS HALL Flowers Hall has served as the home court for the University of North Alabama women’s basketball teams since the school began its women’s basketball program in 1975. Known as one of the top facilities in the Gulf South Conference, the home court has proven to be a key factor in the overall success of the Lions’ men’s and women’s programs. Since the 1978-79 season, the Lion women’s team has posted an impressive 285-127 record in Flowers Hall for a winning percentage of 69.2 at the 4,000seat venue. In 16 seasons under Wayne Byrd, the mark was 143-64, including a perfect 12-0 record at home during the 1983-84 season. Flowers Hall also played host to the women’s NCAA Division II South Region championship game in the 1984-85 season, with Mercer
36
University defeating the Lions 9086 in overtime. Current Lion Coach Terry Fowler was 9-4 in Flowers Hall last season, giving him a 95-76 overall mark during his tenure at UNA. His biggest home win to date is a 71-
56 GSC win over seventh-ranked West Georgia during the 2007-08 campaign. Flowers Hall has also been the scene for nine men’s NCAA Division II playoff games, including regional tournaments in the 1976-
77, 1980-81 and 1983-84 campaigns, and quarterfinal games in 1976-77, 1979-80 and 1983-84 - with UNA posting a perfect 9-0 record in those contests. The first basketball game played in Flowers Hall was on Oct. 5, 1972, when the Boston Celtics and Atlanta Hawks battled in an exhibition game before a crowd that overflowed the capacity of the new facility. Since then, two other NBA games have taken place at Flowers Hall in the 1970’s. Flowers Hall is also the home of the Lion volleyball team, where the program has hosted numerous NCAA tournaments and has posted a 193-28 record at home since the 1995 season. The Lions’ home
Team
was also the host of the first-ever GSC volleyball tournament in 1982. In 1985 the original synthetic floor was replaced with a new synthetic floor. Also, in that same year a new four-sided scoreboard was added to enhance the Lion’s home court. In 1989 new theater seating was installed on the home side for season-ticket holders. The most noticable renovation came in the summer of 2004 when a new maple wood floor was installed, along with new scoreboards. More recently, the flooring was altered in the summer of 2008 to adjust the three- points lines to meet new NCAA rules. The men’s line was pushed back, but the women will shoot from the same three-point arc.

LEO III AND UNA UNA once again boasts the only live Lion mascots in the country living on campus. On July 22, 1974, former UNA president Dr. Robert M. Guillot brought a 35-pound lion cub to the campus and Leo spent the next 14 years “roaring” the school to victory. The original Leo died on Jan. 20, 1988, and a great outpouring of support from the Shoals community resulted in Leo II being brought to UNA in July of 1988. Leo II lived in the compound that once housed the original Leo and grew to a weight of more than 600 pounds at eleven years of age. In 1997, Leo II was selected as the nation’s “Second Best Mascot” by Sports Illustrated. He died in February of 2000. Leo III and Una, born on November 18, 2002, now reside on the campus in the 12,764 square-foot George H. Carroll Lion Habitat. Approaching their eighth birthdays, Leo III and Una are exhibited seven days a week from approximately 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. (weather conditions permitting), unless they are appearing in local venues. All funds associated with the care and feeding of Leo III and UNA, the operation of their habitat, and the conduct of a related educational program are funded exclusively by charitable contributions.

Academic excellence, 48 National Championships and a leadership role in the NCAA’s Division II make the Gulf South Conference something special. The GSC is a charter Division II member and enters its 42nd year as one of the premier conferences at any NCAA level. In the summer of 1970, six college presidents met to talk about athletics; when the meeting ended, a new league emerged—the MidSouth Conference—started by, and to this day run by, the CEOs, the first in NCAA history. It is that CEO-control and involvement that makes the league work and its 14 championships contested in a collegial manner. From that point forward, the GSC has been giant steps ahead of the Division II pack. Dating back to 1997, the league has found neutral sites paying sizeable guarantees for most of its team championships. NCAA Conventions regularly feature GSC-proposed or -inspired legislation. No one wins more regionals or earns more NCAA post-season bids. In 2004, the league purchased its own new construction office space. But the crowning moment came in 2005-06, when the GSC 40
mikeanderson@gscsports.org gscassistantsid@mindspring.com
debuted its highly successful “GSC-TV Live” package which included nine football games and its men’s & women’s basketball tournament finals. Add to that its web-TV show, “GSC Sports Weekly,” and the broadbanding of most of its championships and you can see why the GSC is a Conference paving the way into the 21st century. We take pride in our 45 national championships in 12 sports and more than 100 regional titles, especially because there is no sacrifice on the academic side, where GSC student-athletes regularly earn Academic All-America. The conference added two more titles in 201011 with Valdosta State claiming its second men’s tennis crown in five years and West Florida winning its first-ever baseball national title. Delta State, Florence State (now North Alabama), Jacksonville State, Livingston (now West Alabama), Tennessee-Martin and Troy State were the charter members. Scheduling problems for the 197071 academic year limited the GSC to football, won by Jacksonville State. In 1971, the addition of Southeast Louisiana and Nicholls State increased the membership to eight. The league opened an office in

THE GULF SOUTH CONFERENCE Hammond, LA, changed its name to the Gulf South Conference and began championships in nine men’s sports. Mississippi College and Northwestern Louisiana (now Northwestern State) joined in 1972 and two years later, NWLA left for Division I with SELA and Nicholls State following in 1979. The conference continued with seven teams until 1981, when the CEOs admitted Valdosta State, followed by West Georgia (1983). In 1991, Tennessee-Martin and Troy State went Division I, briefly dropping the GSC back to seven members. An aggressive expansion under the guidance of new Commissioner Nate Salant resulted in 10 new members: Lincoln Memorial (199293); Alabama-Huntsville, Henderson State, Central Arkansas and Mississippi University for Women (MUW in 1993-94); West Florida (1994-95); and Arkansas-Monticello, Arkansas Tech, Montevallo and Southern Arkansas (1995-96). Jacksonville State went Div. I at the end of 1992-93 and Mississippi College dropped to Div. III at the end of 1995-96, only
to be replaced by Christian Brothers to keep the Conference at 16 schools. In July 2000, the GSC welcomed Harding University and Ouachita Baptist University, making it the largest NCAA conference at any level with 18 schools. MUW dropped its athletics program at the end of the 2002-03 season, decreasing the membership to 17. The Conference decreased to 15 teams in 2006-07 when Central Arkansas moved to Division I and Lincoln Memorial made a geographicallybased switch to the South Atlantic Conference, then 14 after Montevallo departed for the Peach Belt Conference. The GSC went away from divisional play after the 2010-11 season when its six Arkansas members broke away, dropping the membership to eight. The Conference did not wait long to implement an aggressive expansion plan which quickly bore fruit when the University of New Orleans was unanimously approved as its ninth member in June, 2011. UNO b comes a full member in the GSC in 201213 after limited participation in volleyball,
cross country, golf and baseball in 2011-12. The GSC took another step in bolstering its membership after sponsoring the Division II applications of Union University (TN) and Shorter University (GA) which were accepted into the NCAA reclassifying process in July of 2011, and will enter the process this fall. Former Commissioner Jim McCullough brought the GSC office to Birmingham. Current Commissioner, Nate Salant began his tenure in October, 1992. He is assisted by Assistant Commissioner for Media and Public Affairs Michael Anderson, Assistant Sports Information Director Albert “A.A.” Moore and Senior Woman Administrator Andrea Anderson. The Chairman of the GSC Board of Directors is Dr. William Cale (North Alabama). Joining him on the executive committee are Vice-Chair Dr. Judith Bense (West Florida) and Past-Chair Dr. Beheruz Sethna (West Georgia). The Supervisors of Officials are Jeff Roberson (Football), John Caldwell (Basketball) and Mike Murphy (Basketball).
