Valdosta State BLAZERS

vs. North Alabama LIONS

December 1, 2012 Flowers Hall Florence, Alabama

Women’s Game • Noon •

The women’s game today against Valdosta State will represent the 61st meeting between the two programs on the basketball court. Although VSU holds a 34-26 record in the all-time series, it was the Lions who won two of the three meetings last season. After each team picked up a victory on its home floor, UNA recorded a 50-48 win over the Blazers in the first round of the Gulf South Conference Tournament in Niceville, Fla.

Valdosta State enters the game with a 4-1 overall record on the year after suffering its first loss of the season Thursday night at Union. The former NAIA power and provisional GSC member handed the Blazers a 69-51 loss. North Alabama is off to a 1-0 start in conference play and had a 6-2 overall record.

The last two meetings between the UNA and VSU women’s teams have resulted in game-winning shots at the buzzer. Last season, on Feb. 11, the Blazers’ Sczeny Harty hit a contested jumper with less than a second remaining to lift VSU to a 59-58 home win. Less than a month later, in the GSC Tournament, Dana Jackson scored as time expired to give the Lions a 50-48 victory.

Men’s Game • 2 p.m. •

The men’s contest today against Valdosta State will represent the 64th all-time meeting between the two basketball programs. After sweeping the home-and-home series a year ago, UNA trails in the overall series by a single game at 31-32. The Lions’ 70-58 road win last season represented head coach Bobby Champagne’s first win at The Complex on the VSU campus.

Both teams enter the game today with perfect 6-0 overall records, including 1-0 marks in GSC play. Valdosta State opened conference action on Thursday with an 83-70 road win at Union.

During Thursday’s night’s 67-55 GSC game against West Florida, the Lions leaned on their defense to open conference play with a win. North Alabama held the Argonauts to just two three-point baskets on the night and limited GSC leading scorer Ellis Young to 15 points. UNA also forced 24 turnovers, leading to 28 points.
