Through a partnership between the New Brunswick College of Craft and Design and UNB, you can spend your first year at either institution. • Learn film analysis, screenwriting and the technical aspects of film and digital video production. • Customize your Arts program to include courses from faculties such as Science, Kinesiology, or Business Administration. • Miramichi region students can begin their university education at home while making the gradual transition to university life. • Consider interesting courses such as Anthropology’s Circumpolar World, Urban History courses or Psychology of the Web. • The BA in Archaeology program, one-of-a-kind in Eastern Canada, provides an understanding of archaeological evidence, discoveries and interpretations, as well as training in how to undertake independent research. • Drama, Creative Writing or a minor in Music – three of the creative options open to you. • Our Bachelor of Arts is the perfect preparation for students seeking a Bachelor of Education degree.

Year 1 All students take ARTS 1000, Development of Western Thought. In addition, you will choose a full year of courses in one subject from three of the following four groups: • Humanities: Classics and Ancient History, English, History, Philosophy, and World Literature and Culture Studies. • Languages: Arabic, French, German, Greek, Japanese, Latin, Russian, Spanish and Chinese. • Social Sciences: Anthropology, Archaeology, Economics, Political Science, Psychology and Sociology. • Sciences: Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science, Geology, Mathematics, Physics and Statistics. Choose two term courses from any of the subjects not already selected. Year 2 Choose three full-year courses from different disciplines or interdepartmental areas such as International Development Studies, Women’s Studies, Law in Society and Multimedia Studies. Choose a one-term course from a fourth area. Choose three additional term courses. By the end of the year, you will choose a major or Honour. Years 3 & 4 Students select 10 one-term, upper-level courses in consultation with their major(s) or Honour(s) advisor(s).

Travel? Study? Do both! You can study at a university in the United States, England, Wales, Sweden, or Australia for one term or one year. Or, do a Study Tour during Spring or Summer Intersession to one of these great destinations: China, Turkey, Greece, Rome, Italy, France, Mexico, London or New York City.

U Choose: Our BBA gives you flexibility in choosing an Honours program in Accounting, Economics, Economics and Finance (combined), Finance, Human Resource Management or Marketing. Complement your program through a minor in something a little different, like Sociology, French or Computer Science.

Typical course curriculum: Year 1 Courses in Social Economics, Humanities and Languages, Mathematics and Sciences, as well as a course introducing you to Business Administration. This foundation year exposes you to the theory underlying future business courses. Year 2 Required core business courses in Accounting, Business Communications, Ethics, Finance, Management Science, Marketing, Organizational Behavior, Statistics, and one elective. At the close of the fall term, you may choose to apply for the Co-op Program. At this point in time, you must decide whether to enter the Honours program, concentrate in an area of business, or pursue a minor or studies in other faculties. Year 3 Courses in Business Law, Management of Information Systems and Organization Design. Students who have chosen a concentration will choose electives from Accounting, Entrepreneurship, Finance, Human Resource Management, International Business, Marketing and Operations Management. Honours students also begin their major. Year 4 You take part in the Competitive Strategy Course, which brings together core areas of business. Students in the Honours program must complete all the remaining required courses.

Way above average? Count on it! Students in our Student Investment Fund program recorded an 83% pass rate on the 2010 Chartered Financial Analyst exam. That’s almost double the global industry pass rate of 42%!

The majority of challenges confronting our world today look to Computer Science for help in finding solutions. Whether it is understanding climate change, improving healthcare, fighting terrorism, discovering new medicines or improving literacy levels — Computer Science plays a significant supporting role. Every year there is a need for over 15,000 new information and communication technology (ICT) professionals in Canada, but our universities produce only a little over 7,000 graduates in ICT fields. For five years in a row, IBM Canada selected UNB Computer Science Co-op students for their Extreme Blue Summer Internship Program. In 2009, two of the 15 technical students chosen from a group of 368 applicants from across Canada were from UNB’s Faculty of Computer Science.

U Choose: Bachelor of Computer Science (BCS) The BCS program involves theory and practice and cutting-edge knowledge. You will study a rapidly evolving field with new technologies and ideas. There are six areas of specialization: • Theory and Computation • Hardware Systems • Multimedia Systems • Software Systems • Geographic Information Systems • Information Systems Bachelor of Information Systems (BISys) The BISys program teaches you how to apply information technology to solve problems within a modern business. You will gain an understanding of how an organization works and the technical skills necessary to design, develop and manage its supporting information systems. This may lead you to careers such as: business analyst, systems analyst, project manager, database designer, application developer, database administrator or chief information officer. Bachelor of Science in Software Engineering (BScSwE) The BScSwE program teaches you to apply engineering techniques to the design, implementation, testing and maintenance of software products that are reliable, economical and fail-safe. Graduates enter into the Member-inTraining process leading to a registered Professional Engineer designation.

Earn While U Learn Our Co-op Program, which offers paid work experience, consists of four to six work terms over the five years of your degree program. Co-op graduates typically have job offers before they graduate because of this previous experience with employers. UNB’s Co-op Program offers attractive salaries, allowing some Co-op students to graduate debt-free or with very low debt. In recent years, the average ratio of positions available per UNB Faculty of Computer Science student applicant has exceeded 2:1, so our Co-op students have enjoyed placement in jobs that interest them. The Professional Experience Program (PEP) is an alternative to the Co-op Program that allows you to participate in a 12- or 16-month internship, typically following your third year of study. You will combine theory and practice in major long-term projects while earning a competitive salary and gaining relevant work experience.

Unique to our Education program is the fully integrated practicum. You’ll spend time in schools on a weekly basis, enhancing what you’ve learned in the classroom. There will also be two extended internships to help you acquire a solid start in the field.

U Choose: The NEW Bachelor of Education (BEd) program begins after you have earned a Bachelor’s degree in any other field. The Consecutive Bachelor of Education degree typically takes 11 months to complete. Your curriculum will depend on the specialty you choose: Elementary & U You will include courses in English, Science, Math, Social Studies and Arts in your first undergraduate degree. Your BEd program will include methodology courses in each of the disciplines taught in elementary schools. Middle or High School & U In your first degree, you will include a major of at least 30 credit hours and a minor of at least 18 credit hours in teachable course work. In addition, you will include at least three credit hours of English. Your Bachelor of Education program will include methodology courses in those teachable concentrations. Adult Education & U We will prepare you for teaching adult learners in a variety of settings. Your program will include a 6- to 12-week practicum. The adult education stream does not qualify you for a teacher’s license.

U Choose: NEW Bachelor of Science in Environment and Natural Resources Graduates will be able to identify and solve environmental and natural resource problems from a holistic, systems perspective, incorporating their knowledge of land, water, air, plants, animals and people. Typical course curriculum: • You can choose to major in: Wildlife Conservation, Environmental Management or Water Resources Management. Options exist within the majors to obtain a Wildlife Management Certification or a minor in Marine Biology through the Huntsman Marine Science Centre. • Courses specific to the majors include: Wildlife Conservation: Fish Biology, Ornithology, Evolution, Genetics, Wildlife Management, Wildlife Scale, Zoology and Conservation Biology. Environmental Management: Environmental Economics, Environmental Ethics, Remote Sensing, Climate change, Sociology and the Environment. Water Resources Management: Eco-toxicology, Hydrology, River & Lake Ecosystems, Water Resources Management, Fish Biology, and Estuary & Oceans Ecosystems. • A series of systems-based courses introduce all students to biological, physical, engineering and socio-cultural systems thinking. Bachelor of Science in Forestry The core program focuses on forestry ecosystem management and combines diverse areas ranging from Science, Ecology and Management Science to Business and Computer Modeling. The Program is approved by the Canadian Forestry Accreditation Board, and prepares you to become a Registered Professional Forester. Typical course curriculum: • You will learn problem-based methods along with Biology, Chemistry, Geology and Mathematics. • You will take Management Sciences along with Forestry and Ecology under Applied Sciences. Studies will proceed to increasing levels of complexity.

Travel? Study? Do both! Every year, Forestry students have the option to travel to a different country to learn about forests and forest management around the world. Our international forestry course has taken students to the United States, Costa Rica, Spain and Chile. Exchange programs are available for one term or a full year with selected universities in Europe and Canada.

Field camps are an intensive 6-day series of field exercises designed to introduce/improve integrative and quantitative forecasting skills. As part of the final-year practicum, you will develop a forest management plan for a landowner. • Get relevant, hands-on experience in forest landscape management, designed to provide an opportunity to integrate skills and knowledge gained throughout the program. • Students in all three programs have faculty advisors who are available throughout the school year to help with course and program selection. • The Faculty strongly encourages work experience in your area, so students in all programs are trained in résumé writing and interview skills. We manage a faculty job board and assist students in finding summer, Co-op and permanent employment.

Kinesiology explores human movement ranging from biophysical principles to the philosophy, sociology, and psychology of sport, exercise and leisure. It also includes the management and delivery of sport, fitness, recreation, and tourism practices and services. The Faculty has been a leader in the study of human movement and active living in Eastern Canada for more than 50 years. The Faculty of Kinesiology offers the choice of two undergraduate degree programs, a Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology and a Bachelor of Recreation and Sport Studies.

Support Services The Faculty of Kinesiology is known for its caring and student-centred approach to learning. At “KIN CAMP,” our two-day orientation camping trip, you’ll meet your peer mentors and many of your professors. We also provide sessions on the transition from high school to university, careers, financial aid and student services.

If you are interested in public interest work, UNB Law funds bursaries of up to $3,500 for students who, as their primary summer job, volunteer with a public interest organization, such as a women's shelter or non-profit organization.

U Choose: Typical course curriculum: Year 1 • In your first year, you take seven compulsory courses: Foundations of Law, Constitutional Law, Criminal Law, Contracts, Property, Torts and Fundamentals of Advocacy, in which students argue a case before a mock Appeals Court. Years 2 & 3 • Second and third year students take a mix of compulsory courses (Administrative Law, Evidence, Civil Procedure, Commercial Law, Conflict of Laws, Business Organizations and Professional Conduct); courses chosen from compulsory areas (Perspectives and Theories, Social and Political Organization, and Business); and specialized electives. • Despite its small size, UNB’s Law School offers a large number of specialized elective courses, including: Intellectual Property, Environmental Law, Natural Resources Law, Family Law, Immigration Law, Insurance, Aboriginal Law, Criminal Procedure, International Law, Feminist Legal Theory, Legal History, Human Rights, Health Law and Comparative Law.

Admissions information you should know: • You can apply for admission to UNB Law after your third year of undergraduate study. • We rank applications on a grade point average and on the standard Law School Admission Test (LSAT) score. • Apply early! U Choose: • There are over 20 different degree program options within the Faculty of Science. • Students can choose a concurrent five-year program earning a Bachelor of Science along with either a Bachelor of Arts or a Bachelor of Computer Science. • Choose from our Environmental Biology or Environmental Geochemistry programs, or obtain your degree in Environment and Natural Resources, a joint degree program offered by Science and Forestry and Environmental Management. Each prepares you to deal with contemporary environmental issues. • We offer a four and a half year Bachelor of Medical Laboratory Science program in collaboration with the New Brunswick Community College. Typical course curriculum: Year 1 You will build a solid foundation across basic science through five departments: Biology, Chemistry, Geology, Mathematics and Statistics, and Physics. Your program depends on your future plans and we will help you decide through individual counselling. A typical course load consists of two terms each of Calculus, three of the following sciences: Biology, Chemistry, Geology or Physics, labs in two of the three sciences chosen and up to 2 electives, usually in Arts, particularly for students in the Bachelor of Science program planning a major in Psychology or Economics. Year 2 At the end of Year 1, you will choose a subject as a major. The majority of courses in the second year will be in your chosen subject. Years 3 & 4 You may take specialized and advanced courses in your chosen field if you have met your core requirements. If you choose an Honours program, you will undertake a research project and defend it at a seminar.
