ROBOCOP It’s not for nothing that this game topped that charts for over a year following its release in 1989. An adaption rather than a conversion of of the Data East arcade game, alongside which it was developed, it is a multi-stage action shooter closely following the plot of the film. The first of Ocean’s golden period of film licenses, Robocop is somewhat unusual in that it is the 8-bit versions that really excel. While they may not have the detail or colour of their 16-bit brothers, the Commodore 64, Spectrum and Amstrad versions seem most at home. The Amiga and Atari ST versions are fun to play, but the graphics are weak for the power of the platforms and the game itself runs surprisingly slowly. Narrowed down to key sequences from the film, the game sees Robocop cleaning up the streets of Old Detroit as he tracks the root of the city’s problems back to OCP, the company that owns the cops. Presented as a sidescrolling shooter for the most part, the game also mixes in a few mini games. Ranging from shooting galleries to e-fit puzzles they help break up the relentless shooting action and add variety to the game. Arguably more playable than any Robocop game that has followed it, was worthy of its success at the time and the years have not dimmed its lustre.
