Hello Friends of UNB Swimming! From the pool deck

My name is Robin Ferdinand, and I am the Head Coach of UNB Swimming. I am a UNB Swimming Alumni from 1994-1999 (née Fougere) I have recently taken over from Paula Crutcher-Stewart as she has unfortunately had to take some time off work due to illness. Although it is a sad circumstance, I am extremely excited about returning to full time coaching with such an amazing group of young athletes. My other coaching experiences includes head coach of Dartmouth Crusaders from 1999-2005 and executive director of Swimming New Brunswick from 2005-2011. This year we have a roster of 30 swimmers, with a full roster of 20 on the women’s side, the largest the team has been in some time. The team making some noise at the Amby

The year so far... The 2011-2012 season has started out very strong with the first meet of the year at home. The Amby Legere Invitational was led by Danielle Losier, who had three firsts and two seconds, and qualified for the CIS Championships in the 50 breaststroke. The team had other podium performances, with Danielle Merasty in the freestyle and butterfly events and Kaitlyn Young with a standout win in the 200 fly. The men’s team was led by first year swimmers Chris Garcelon, Scott Mills and Zachary Hilchey who all had multiple top five finishes. For the second meet of the year, the team traveled to Acadia University, with the goal to get up and race in all events. Numerous athletes posted lifetime bests as they rose to the challenge of a meet in the middle of hard training. The women were once again led by Danielle Losier, with a win in the 100 fly and top five placings in all other events. Distance swimmer Julianna Vantellingen also stood out, with a second place in the 400 free and third place in the 800 free. The men’s team were once again led by freshman Zachary Hilchey with numerous top five finishes.

Coach Ferdinand gives first year swimmer Scott Mills feedback on his backstroke at the Amby.

Come cheer on the V-Reds! Our next meet is the AUS Invitational meet in Halifax, NS on Nov. 19 and 20, 2011. This is our big meet to wrap up the first half of the season. We are looking to add a few more CIS qualifiers and have multiple top three finishes, as well as a high percentage of lifetime bests. If you are in the Halifax area, please stop by and cheer on the V-Reds! Feel free to contact me anytime at Robin.Ferdinand@unb.ca or (506) 453-5041. Stay tuned for more news and upcoming events!
