PROMOTIONS TO FULL PROFESSOR Kirill Afonin Chemistry Dr. Kirill Afonin’s research applies knowledge about RNA and DNA to form modular nucleic acid nanoparticles with tunable properties and biological activities suitable for a broad range of biomedical applications. Afonin has been the recipient of about $4M in funding, and as the principal investigator he also received a prestigious National Institutes of Health Maximizing Investigators’ Research Award and National Institutes of Health R01. As the co-principal investigator, he has another National Institutes of Health R01, National Institutes of Health R15, and National Institutes of Health R03. He is the recipient of two National Institutes of Health Fellows Awards for Research Excellence, and the Integration of Undergraduate Teaching and Research Award at UNC Charlotte. He currently serves as a founding council member and vice-president of International Society of RNA Nanotechnology and Nanomedicine.

He is also an Elected Full Member of Sigma Xi: The Scientific Research Honor Society and an Associate Editor for several respected journals such as Nanomedicine: Nanotechnology, Biology and Medicine.

Additionally, he is also a recipient of two UNC Inter-institutional Planning Grants Awards and one The São Paulo Researchers in International Collaboration Award.

Afonin has over 80 publications, with 65 of them listed on PubMed.

Kelly Anderson Special Education and Child Development Dr. Kelly Anderson’s research focuses on innovative teacher preparation programs and the examination of effective inclusive practices among general and special education teachers such as co-teaching, differentiation, and multitiered systems of support with K-12 learners. She teaches undergraduate courses specific to interdisciplinary teacher preparation, as well as graduate courses focusing on the implementation of evidence-based interventions for diverse K-12 learners in inclusive learning environments. Dr. Anderson has secured funding from the U.S. Department of Education, Office of Special Education Programs (approximately $500K) to create the leading dual teacher preparation program in the state. She has also secured $1.2M as co-principal investigator of an interdisciplinary preparation grant from the U.S. Department of Education, Office of Special Education Programs, as well as multiple awards (approximately $2M) from the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction, Exceptional Children’s Division. Dr. Anderson’s publication record includes articles in highly respected journals in special education such as The Journal of Special Education, Rural Special Education Quarterly, and Teacher Education and Special Education; she has served as the Managing Editor of The Journal of Special Education. Dr. Anderson was awarded the Teaching Fellows Undergraduate Excellence in Teaching Award (2013, 2005) in recognition of her teaching and mentorship.

Tao Hong Systems Engineering and Engineering Science Dr. Tao Hong’s research focuses on energy forecasting, power systems operations and planning, renewable integration, risk management, energy trading, retail forecasting, revenue optimization, and forecasting in healthcare, transportation, and sports. He currently has two active research grants: 1) delivery point level load and weather data analysis, sponsored by the North Carolina Electric Membership Corporation; and 2) short term load forecasting under data attacks, sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy and Brookhaven National Laboratory. Dr. Hong has received numerous awards and recognitions, including the Charlotte Business Journal Energy Education Leader of the Year (2017) and three Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Power & Energy Society awards: Power System Planning & Implementation Technical Committee Prize Paper Award (2016), Power System Planning & Implementation Technical Committee Working Group Recognition Award (2015), and Technical Council Distinguished Service Award (2014). He is a Senior Member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers and is Directorat-Large of the International Institute of Forecasters.

Monica Johar Business Information Systems and Operations Management Dr. Monica S. Johar’s research goal is to develop and integrate a variety of quantitative models for problem solving. Her research interests include structural estimation of controlled diffusion processes, service analytics, software engineering, content delivery systems, knowledge management, and web personalization. Her research has successfully incorporated a wide

range of techniques such as stochastic optimal control, stochastic differential equations, machine learning algorithms, mixed integer programming, game theory, probability theory, and genetic algorithms as well as efficient heuristics for making solutions computationally feasible for real-world settings. She has successfully published articles in premier information systems journals such as Information Systems Research, Journal of Management Information Systems and Decision Sciences.

Five of her published articles have been featured in the University of TexasDallas Top 100 Business School Research Rankings™ Journal List, a reputable metric for business school research productivity.

Her research has received multiple nominations for best paper awards in premier international conferences such as Workshop on Information Technologies and Systems and Workshop of E-business.

Dr. Johar currently serves as a senior editor for Production and Operations Management Society journal and an associate editor for Information Technology and Management.

Fumie Kato Languages and Culture Studies Dr. Fumie Kato’s research focuses on applied linguistics and teaching/ learning strategies for students. She is the recipient of the Faculty International Education Award, the Bonnie E. Cone Early-Career Professorship, the Teacher Award from the American Association of Teachers of Japanese, and The Japanese Foreign Minister’s Commendations award. She was also a finalist for the Bank of America Award for Teaching Excellence. Dr. Kato has received $331,334 in grants. She has published two books, Strategies for Growing and Enhancing University-Level Japanese Programs and Improving Student Motivation toward Japanese Learning.

Ann Loraine Bioinformatics and Genomics Dr. Ann Loraine earned her Ph.D. in Molecular and Cell Biology from U.C. Berkeley in the mid-1990s.

Inspired by the new field of bioinformatics, which uses computers to investigate how biological systems work, she took a break from research to study programming and statistics, attending classes at Berkeley.

After gaining software engineering skills, she joined the Berkeley Drosophila Genome Project as a postdoctoral trainee, building tools to help researchers access and understand genome data. She has continued this work ever since, in industry and academia. A Professor in the Department of Bioinformatics and Genomics, Dr. Loraine teaches statistics, bioinformatics, and programming.

Susan McCarter Social Work Dr. Susan McCarter’s research focus on the overrepresentation of youth of color in the U.S. carceral systems and health/human services; white supremacy; antiracism & racial equity. She is the recipient of many awards including the 2021 Service Award from the College of Health and Human Services, a 2019 Fellow for the Society for Social Work and Research, the 2018 Outstanding Leader Award from Race Matters for Juvenile Justice, and the 2018 Community Engagement Award from the College of Health and Human Services. Dr. McCarter is currently funded by Association of American Colleges & Universities for Truth, Racial Healing, & Transformation.

She teaches graduate research, diversity, and forensic social work. She is the author of three articles: The School-to-Prison Pipeline: A Primer for Social Workers; Intersection of Mental Health, Education, & Juvenile Justice: The Role of Mental Health Providers in Reducing the School-to-Prison Pipeline; and Eliminate Racism.

Lisa Merriweather Educational Leadership Employing the art of story and dialogic engagement, complete with creativity and innovativeness, emotionality and theorizing, and historical and contemporary cultural and political critique, Dr. Lisa Merriweather invites readers and interlocutors to a space of reflection through (re)presenting and (re)languaging racialized experiences through her teaching, research, and service.

Her research explores the realities of race, particularly through the lens of anti-Black racism in the education of adults in formal, nonformal, and informal settings. More specifically she focuses on culturally liberating mentoring, STEM doctoral education, museum education, and Black women faculty in higher education. She teaches courses on equity and inclusion, adult education, and qualitative research.

She is a co-principal investigator and the social science researcher on a National Science Foundation Alliances for Graduate Education and the Professoriate grant totaling over $2M. She has held leadership positions in a variety of organizations including the Adult Education Research Conference -Steering Committee, Commission of Professors of Adult Education-Executive Council Member, and Cato College of Education Diversity Committee - Inaugural Chairperson. She was nominated by her peers for inclusion in the Phyllis M. Cunningham archive of quintessential autobiographies for the Twenty-First Century, honored as a distinguished alumnus of University of Georgia’s Learning, Leadership and Organization Department, and was the 2019 recipient of the Cato College of Education Diversity Award. Dr. Merriweather is also co-founder and co-editor of Dialogues for Social Justice: An Adult Education Journal, and was a co-editor for the Decennial 2020 edition of the Handbook of Adult and Continuing Education, a premier publication in the field.

Irina Nesmelova Physics and Optical Science Dr. Irina Nesmelova and her group conduct research at the interface of biophysics and structural biology. Continuously funded by the National Institutes of Health and other domestic and international agencies, they use experimental and theoretical tools to gain the mechanistic understanding of biologically and medically significant proteins. Dr. Nesmelova is a member of several professional societies and serves as Editor for Nucleic Acid Research and Associate Editor-in-Chief for Biomolecules.

She has published more than 50 papers, two book chapters, and made numerous presentations at national and international conferences. Several students named Dr. Nesmelova the professor who had the most significant impact on their education at UNC Charlotte.

Margaret Quinlan Communication Studies Dr. Margaret Quinlan’s research explores how communication creates, resists and transforms knowledge about bodies.

She critiques power structures in order to empower individuals who are marginalized inside and outside of healthcare systems.

Additionally, her scholarly work explores the organizing of health care resources and work opportunities for people with lived differences. Dr. Quinlan authored approximately 40 journal articles, 17 book chapters and co-produced documentaries in a regional Emmy award-winning series (National Distribution with PBS and available on Amazon). Dr. Quinlan has published in Health Communication, Text & Performance Quarterly, Disability Studies Quarterly, Women & Language, Women’s Reproductive Health, Qualitative Research in Medicine and Healthcare, and Journal of Holistic Nursing. She co-authored a book: You’re doing it wrong! Mothering,

media, and medical expertise with Rutgers University Press. Dr. Quinlan received the Bonnie E. Cone Early-Career Professorship in Teaching (2015-2018).

Dylan Savage Music Dylan Savage’s research is interdisciplinary, focusing on the beneficial interconnections between music and non-music disciplines. Savage is author of the book The Transposed Musician: Teaching Universal Skills to Improve Performance and Benefit Life and co-author of the book A Symposium for Pianists and Teachers: Strategies to Develop the Mind and Body for Optimal Performance. He is the author of numerous journal articles on wellness, biomechanics, entrepreneurship, and teaching creativity in Clavier, Clavier Companion, American Music Teacher, and Pianoforte. His students learn to apply universal skills to both music and other disciplines. Savage is a Bösendorfer Concert Artist, a Capstone Records recording artist, and a winner of the Rome Festival Orchestra Competition.

Mohamed Shehab Software and Information Systems Dr. Mohamed Shehab’s research is in the broad areas of network and information security and privacy. In particular, he has focused on advancing the state of the art in the design and implementation of access control and policy management systems for emerging technologies such as online social networks, web browsers and mobile applications. He has led and collaborated on many efforts investigating, designing and developing mechanisms and tools that provide guidance to users and enhance their awareness when making security and policy decisions. Dr. Shehab’s research requires the integration of multi-disciplinary topics such as data mining, recommender systems,

game theory, human computer interaction, visualization and formal methods. He has collaborated with teams outside and inside UNC Charlotte on using mobile computing to deliver user behavioral interventions to address topics such as organizational security awareness, student alcohol drinking, and binge eating. He is the recipient of the Google Research Award, and has been funded by US National Science Foundation, National Institute of Health, Department of Defense, and Google. Dr. Shehab was selected as a finalist for 2015 Bank of America Award for Teaching Excellence.

His research and teaching typically have an interdisciplinary focus, reflected in his contributions to the Public Policy, Legal Studies, and Women’s & Gender Studies programs. Dr. Szmer advises and coaches the UNC Charlotte Mock Trial team and has served as Associate Chair, Undergraduate Coordinator, and Political Science Honors Program Director. He also served on four National Science Foundation panels and presently sits on an Advisory Council for a program administering National Science Foundation dissertation grants.

Michelle Stephan Middle, Secondary, and K-12 Education Dr. Michelle Stephan is a Professor of Mathematics Education. Her research interests involve investigating ways in which researchers and teachers can leverage mathematics content to design instructional materials for ethical reasoning and critical mathematics consciousness. She is also interested in redefining what mathematics should be taught to P12 students. Her article What Mathematics Education May Prepare Students for the Society of the Future? was named “2017 Article Most Likely to Change the World” by Springer Nature. She and her colleagues were recently awarded a $3 million grant to support North Carolina teachers to develop a shared vision for high quality mathematics teaching.

Dr. Jerry Troutman’s research focuses on the development of chemical probes to investigate complex carbohydrate structures formed on the surface of pathogenic and symbiotic bacteria. His research laboratory has focused on the training of students at all levels from early stage undergraduates to Ph.D. His students have moved on to numerous professional schools, prestigious Ph.D. programs, and important industrial positions. His continued work with Master’s students in Chemistry led to him taking the Graduate Program Director position for the program in 2020. Dr. Troutman’s research group has been funded by the National Institutes of Health since 2012 through R15, and more recently, R01 grant mechanisms where his research group has brought over two million dollars to the university. His work has been published in high quality American Chemical Society journals and has been cited by articles in high impact journals. His teaching outside the laboratory has focused primarily on upper level biochemistry for undergraduates and introductory biochemistry courses for graduate students. Most recently, Dr. Troutman developed a course entitled Life at the Nanoscale to introduce the relationships between nanoscience and biology to Nanoscale Science Ph.D. students.

John Szmer Political Science and Public Administration Dr. John Szmer studies appellate courts, focusing on group decision-making processes and diversity.

His more than two dozen publications include a University of Virginia Press book entitled The View from the Bench and Chambers. Dr. Szmer has received two National Science Foundation grants.

Tricia Turner Kinesiology Dr. Tricia Turner’s research focuses on ankle instability and long-term impact of joint injury on physical activity and osteoarthritis development. She is a Fellow in the American College of Sports Medicine and National Athletic Trainers Association. Dr. Turner has published in top Sports Medicine and Orthopedic journals. She has received funding from the National Athletic Trainers Association, the American Foot and Ankle Society, and the Arthritis Foundation. She serves on the editorial board for several research journals in her field. Dr. Turner is also the program director for the Master of Science in Athletic Training program, a program she successfully transitioned from a Bachelor’s degree program.
