7KH )0 7HDP MXVW FRPSOHWHG D PRVW FKDOOHQJLQJ DQG UHZDUGLQJ ÂżVFDO \HDU , KRSH \RX ZLOO WDNH D PLQXWH WR read  the  “Fiscal  Year  Highlightsâ€?  article  in  this  edition  of  Facilities  Focus.   We  have  many  successes  to  celebrate.   A  couple  of  important  themes  emerged  from  our  recent review  of  the  year.   First,  we  made  great  strides  in  improving  our  communication  with  the  campus community.   We  had  some  excellent  examples  of  this last  year  including  Housekeeping  and  Recycling’s  FRPPXQLFDWLRQ DURXQG WKH PLQL ELQ SURMHFW )DFLOLWLHV Operations  communication  regarding  the  campus-Âwide  power  outage,  and  our  new  “Construction  Situation  Reportâ€?  that  goes  out  to  the  campus  on  a  regular  basis.   These  and  many  other  initiatives  are  helping  get  the  word  out  to  our  customers  in  these  changing  and  some- what  chaotic  times.   A  second  positive  thread  to  our  work  was  our successful  application  of  the  “plan-Âact-Âcheck-Âplan  againâ€?  methodology  for  all  our  initiatives.   This  is how  high  performing  organizations  continuously improve.   We  have  many  examples  of  how  this process  is  making  us  successful  including  the  mini-Âbin SURJUDP SUHYHQWLYH PDLQWHQDQFH HTXLSPHQW SURMHFW WKH FUDIWVSHUVRQ KDQGKHOG GHYLFH SURMHFW LPSURYHPHQWV LQ RXU DELOLW\ WR GHOLYHU LQIRUPDO SURMHFWV FULWLFDO DODUPV SURMHFW DQG XVH RI DIWHU DFWLRQ UHYLHZV :H QHHG WR continue  to  use  this  process  and  to  solicit  feedback from  our  customers.   We  conducted  our  bi-Âannual  customer  satisfaction survey  in  March.   The  results  are  in  and  the  trends are  positive  with  an  overall  satisfaction  rating  for  the  Department  at  91%.  Recycling  and  Grounds  received the  highest  ratings  of  96%  and  95%  respectively.   Now  we  need  to  work  on  that  last  9%!   The  survey  also gave  customers  an  opportunity  to  comment  and  those Â

Looking  ahead,  this  next  year  will  be  no  less  challenging.   The  South  Village  “extreme  makeoverâ€?  is  in  full  swing  ZLWK ÂżYH PDMRU SURMHFWV DOO LQ FRQVWUXFWLRQ WKLV IDOO With  2,000  students  living,  studying,  dining,  and  playing  in  the  construction  zone,  we  have  our  hands  full! 7UDIÂżF QRLVH DQG FRQJHVWLRQ ZLOO EH HYHU SUHVHQW for  the  next  18  months  in  that  area  of  campus.   The  Football  Stadium  will  be  completed  in  September  and  the  coaches  will  move  in  and  start  practicing  the  team.   CRI  Deck  I  will  also  open  this  fall  as  construction  continues  on  PORTAL  and  Student  Housing  Phase  X.   In  case  you  thought  we  would  get  a  breather  when  all  RI WKHVH SURMHFWV DUH ÂżQLVKHG WKLQN DJDLQ 7KHUH DUH D ZKROH VOHZ RI VWXGHQW KRXVLQJ DQG LQIUDVWUXFWXUH SURMHFWV lined  up  behind  them.   With  the  budget  woes  of  the  State  easing  somewhat,  we  can  also  expect  a  healthy  dose  of  repairs  and  renovations  to  land  in  our  lap.   Enrollment  is  expected  to  rise  by  almost  1,000  students  WKLV IDOO DGGLQJ WR WKH WUDIÂżF DQG SDUNLQJ FRQJHVWLRQ on  campus  and  making  it  harder  for  us  to  get  where  we  QHHG WR EH WR GR RXU MREV Please  exercise  caution  as  you  move  around  campus  and  abide  by  the  service  vehicle  driving  and  parking  rules  (University  Policy  Statement  #85,  which  is  now  listed  as  604.3  http://legal.uncc.edu/policies/up-Â604.3).  Be  safe  –  watch  yourself,  watch  your  teammates!

Award  Winning  Program   |   FACILITIES  MANAGEMENT  The  award  recognizes  the  program  that  best represents  sustainable  resource  use  through  waste  reduction,  re-Âuse,  and  recycling  on  a college  campus. Colleges  and  universities  from  North  Carolina  and  South  Carolina  were  up  for  the  award.  However,  UNC  Charlotte  took  away  top  honors.   Among  the  many  attributes  highlighted  during  the  award  ceremony,  one  that  stood  out  to  the  committee  and  fellow  universities  was  the  implementation  of  mini  trash  bins  on  campus.

Mr.  Franklin  will  serve  as  the  Program  Development  and  Education  Coordinator.  Solomon  is  originally  from  Greensboro,  North  Carolina.  He  is  a  graduate  from  the  University  of  North  Carolina  at  Charlotte  where  he  has  earned  three  degrees.  Solomon completed  his  B.A.  in  Art,  with  a  concentration  in  Graphic  Design.  He  also  obtained  his  B.A.  in  Africana Studies  and  received  his  Master’s  Degree  in  History  with  a  focus  in  Public  History.  Solomon  has  worked  in  the  greater  Charlotte  community  as  a  Creative  Consultant  producing  quality  communications  based  deliverables  for  organizations  internal  and  external  audiences.  He  also  has  worked  at  UNC  Charlotte  as a  Communications  Specialist. In  this  role  his  goal  is  to  create  and  conduct  profession- al,  personal  and  technical  training  and  education  pro- grams  for  staff  that  will  enhance  and  sustain  internal  communication,  increase  technical  competence  and  boost  staff  morale.  Solomon  will  also  focus  on  documenting  the  success  of  the  department  and promoting  the  brand  to  internal  and  external customers,  including  students,  faculty  and  staff.  He  believes  it  is  important  to  involve  students  in  educating  key  stakeholders  in  the  importance  of  creating,  maintaining  and  promoting  UNC  Charlotte  as  a  campus  of  distinction.  facilities.uncc.edu  Â
Mr.  Randolph  will  serve  as  the  Night  Shift Manager.  Guy  is  a  long-Âtime  resident  of  lower Bucks  County,  Pennsylvania,  and  he  has  been married  to  his  wife,  Deanna  for  31  years.  His interests  include  family,  sports  and  traveling. Guy  comes  to  us  with  an  extensive  background  in WKH LQGXVWU\ +LV ÂżUVW VXPPHU MRE DV D \HDU ROG ZDV DV D ZLQGRZ FOHDQHU DQG Ă€RRU WHFKQLFLDQ )URP that  point  on  he  has  always  said,  “as  long  as  I  have a  squeegee  my  family  will  never  go  hungry!â€?  Over  the  years,  Guy  has  amassed  experience  in  various environments  in  the  housekeeping  field,  such  as RIÂżFHV FKXUFKHV VFKRROV DQG KRVSLWDOV +H DOVR RZQHG KLV RZQ MDQLWRULDO FRPSDQ\ IRU QLQH \HDUV His  tenure  as  a  Facilities  Director  in  charge  of maintenance,  housekeeping  and  laundry  have  enabled  him  to  understand  what  is  truly  involved  in  making  a  business  work.  Guy  states  that  his  goal  is  to  become  an  expert  in  the  industry,  to  become  a  superior  leader  and  teacher,  and  also  to  develop  character,  team  work  and  pride  throughout  the  facilities  management  department.  The  work  that  we  do  here  in  Facilities  Management  impacts  everyone  who  enters  this beautiful  campus,  and  first  impressions  mean HYHU\WKLQJ *X\ÂśV ÂżUVW TXHVWLRQ WR KLV VWDII HDFK night  is,  “Is  the  University  cleaner  today  than  it was  yesterday.â€? ince Phase One of the FM Workstation Support a n d Tr a n s i t i o n t o I T S w a s i m p l e m e n t e d in December 2011 with the transition of user support calls to the ITS Help Desk, ITS has been planning P h a s e 2 f o r t h e t r a n s i t i o n o f o u r F a c i l i t i e s Management workstations to the campus domain and the share drive files to the campus share. Phase Two is estimated to begin this Fall, a p p r o x i m a t e l y N o v e m b e r 2 0 1 2 . D u r i n g t h i s phase, our share drive files will be moved to the campus share and FM workstations will transition to the campus Windows network. Phase Two will enable the use of the NinerNET login to log into your PC files along with Outlook email on the campus share server eliminating the use of the Windows FM Password. As a reminder, this new FM work station transition provides many advantages including easier system updates,
software upgrades and consistent backups along with the campus standards for our Facilities Management hardware. In order to prepare for the upcoming share drive and workstations transition, we request that all Facilities Management personnel begin cleaning u p t h e i r M y D o c u m e n t s , D e p a r t m e n t , a n d P u b l i c f i l e s a n d f o l d e r s t o r e m o v e n o l o n g e r needed files off the share drive. This process will make the transition easier and quicker. Facilities Technology: University Partnership from Down Under

acilities Information Systems (FIS) Director, Ray Dinello, visited Curtain University in Perth, Australia to provide insight into the implementation of their new A RCHIBUS software modu l e s t h a t w i l l f u r t h e r p r o g r e s s t h e i r university’s efforts and expand their ARCHIBUS infrastruct u r e t o s u p p o r t a d d i t i o n a l business processes. Our Facilities Technology partnership with Curtin University began several years ago at an International ARCHIBUS Users’ Conference in Washington, D.C., after Facilities Information S y s t e m s s h a r e d U N C C h a r l o t t e F a c i l i t i e s Management’s Five-Year Technology Plan. Since then, Curtin University and FIS share technology plans and lessons learned from their WHFKQRORJ\ SURMHFWV DV ERWK KDYH D VWURQJ commitment to leveraging facilities technology.
\HDU 0DQ\ RI WKHVH SURMHFWV KDYH DOUHDG\ EHHQ implemented on our campus and due to our experiences and ARCHIBUS knowledge with these technologies, FIS was asked to travel to Curtin University in Perth, Australia, to sit in on their information sharing and requirements gathering workshops. Ray Dinello took a ten day trip to Perth, Australia to share his team’s experiences and to assist Curtin University in its planning phase for VHYHUDO QHZ )DFLOLWLHV 7HFKQRORJ\ SURMHFWV The trip took three flights to travel 9,242 miles, which was a total flight time of 28 hours and 30 minutes to get from Charlotte to Perth.

Curtin University had a very detailed schedule for Ray that allowed him the opportunity to tour the campus, visit with all of the Facilities M a n a g e m e n t d e p a r t m e n t s a n d p e r f o r m a presentation to Curtin Facilities Management leadership;; however, most of his time each day ZDV GHGLFDWHG WR DOO GD\ $5&+,%86 SURMHFW workshops. The opportunity to travel to Perth and work with Curtin University was a unique learning experience that provided insights on how another university in another country does business. Several of the learned technologies, ideas, and new processes they are implementing are now part of our new Facilities Management technologies related to Facilities Condition Assessment (FCAP), Mobil Technology and PM & Equipment Management. David’s last day with us was Friday, July 20, 2012. All of us are sad t o s a y g o o d b y e t o D a v i d , w h o a c c e p t e d a Technical Consultant position with Business R e s o u r c e G r o u p ( C h a r l o t t e D i v i s i o n ) , o u r contractor for Archibus. David has been with the Facilities Management Information Systems team since January 2009 a n d h a s s e r v e d a s t h e S y s t e m s A n a l y s t a n d t h e S y s t e m s M a n a g e r. S i n c e h i s a r r i v a l , h e successfully created many custom Archibus developments, helped establish the Building Automation Systems (BAS) architecture and inventory, and assisted the team with many GHYHORSPHQW SURMHFWV DQG SURYLGHG VXSSRUW IRU our Facilities Management and campus customers.
