FACILITIES MANAGEMENT
| UNC Charlotte Chancellor
Message from UNC Charlotte's Chancellor Dear Colleagues:
M y mother taught me as a young child that you never get a
second chance to make a first impression; and I have found that to be true. First impressions really do matter. I am reminded of this regularly in my daily interactions with various constituents. Without fail, when visitors come to campus for the first time - or for the first time in a long time - they are always blown away by the beauty and the rapid growth of our campus and facilities. As we begin 2013, which is shaping up to be a very eventful year in the life of UNC Charlotte, I wanted to take a moment to express my deep appreciation for your hard work and dedication, and for all that you do to keep our facilities comfortable and beautiful. You truly are the unsung heroes who play an incredibly important role in helping our University make a great first impression! Chancellor Dubois
THANK YOU...and here’s to a great year! Cordially
Philip L. Dubois, Chancellor Chancellor Dubois and Mrs. Dubois support the Bi-Annual Campus Cleanup

FACILITIES MANAGEMENT
| Employee of the Quarter
Devi n Hatley Innovative and Dedicated Facilities Management had been working for more
than two years to establish a reliable and visually pleasing energy dashboard. There was mounting frustration with metering and software issues, and concern that Facilities Management would not be able to provide the desired result with the existing software. The energy dashboard monitoring of EPIC’s (Energy Production Infrastructure Center) energy use was a high priority for the EPIC building dedication.
Phil Jones presents EOQ Award to Devin The Employee of the Quarter award is presented to an individual who goes beyond expected duties, consistently maintains a high level of work, exhibits outstanding customer service and/or demonstrates creativity, safety, and noteworthy behavior over the course of the quarter.
Devin Hatley, nominated by Tom Sparks in Capital Projects, volunteered his time and expertise to work with the software developer, the customer and Facilities Engineering to resolve these issues and provide the end product of reliable energy data presented in a visually attractive, real time presentation. Additionally, his perseverance will result in a cost avoidance of purchasing and implementing alternative energy dashboard software estimated at $75,000 - $100,000. Energy Dashboard

When the opportunity presented itself to add energy information to the flat screens along with recycling and waste reduction information, we were all excited. None of us thought the process would take so long.
Thanks to Devin’s commitment and perseverance we Recycling works with David Jones, Sustainability finally are seeing the idea come to fruition.” Coordinator, along with our Facilities Energy team, Tom Sparks, Tom Stutts, and Tony Schallert assisting Tom Sparks, Capital Projects with resource conservation education. Devin had the Kathy Boutin-Pasterz, Recycling idea to add education to the flat screens a few years ago.
BES & Recycling Earns 2013 Green Award Who’d ever guess a 10 x 12 inch mini-trashbin
would get so much attention? Building Environmental Services (BES) and Recycling received this year’s Charlotte Chamber Wells Fargo Green Award – the third award for the unit since launching the University’s mini-trashbin program. The Chamber’s GreenWorks program webpage says the award recognizes “companies who have implemented an innovative green product, service or process; has created an environment that fosters and encourages creative green thinking; and whose experience has been shared with, and can benefit, other businesses or the greater community.” Thanks to efforts by UNC Charlotte students, faculty, and staff, the program has increased UNC Charlotte’s office recycling by 10 to 15 percent since implementation of the mini-bins.

The drain line from the photo lab in Rowe was blocked
and it was determined that the blockage was under the brick walk on the East side of Rowe. The team removed the bricks and dug down to find the damaged drain line. They then uncovered 25 feet of existing drain that was full of roots and debris and replaced all old piping with new. The old clean out was replaced with a new one to help drain the line. All plumbing was repaired, the grade was reconstructed and the brick walk way was reinstalled. The team from Zone 5, Renovations, and Grounds saved the University nearly $10,000 by completing the work in-house.

Master of Her Fate I am 55 years old and I do not know if I am the
oldest or the youngest to receive a Master’s Degree while working as a Building Environmental Service Technician (BEST) or not, but I do know this, I came to this campus with a Bachelor of Science in Management from Montreat College with a 3.25 GPA. I also have a Paralegal Certificate from UNC Charlotte with the full intent on building a career here on campus. I am a mother and a grandmother of seven grandchildren.
“I try to be a good role model for the rest of the team that I work with by setting a good example.” After several attempts to move into an administrative support position did not pan out, I decided to go back to school. I have always wanted to work in a law firm or an entity dealing with legal matters. I applied for a position as a legal assistant in the Office of Special Counsel here on campus and was unsuccessful. In deciding to go back to school, I first contacted Charlotte School of Law. The counselor that I spoke with informed me that the school preferred that their first year law students not work so they can concentrate on their studies. This was not an option for me. I really needed to work to pay bills; therefore, I chose to get a Master’s Degree instead. The reason I chose Montreat was because of the Christ centered nature of the curriculum and the fact that I already had a degree from the school in business management. I graduated on December 15, 2012 with a Master of Science Degree in Management and Leadership. I attended school as a fulltime student while also working fulltime here on campus as a BEST. My GPA is 3.40. My hope is to have a successful career here on campus. Continuing to be simply a BEST is not among my goals. It is my sincere hope to retire from UNC Charlotte and become one of the success stories in the BES unit.
10
I try to be a good role model for the rest of the team that I work with by setting a good example. I have taken several of the classes offered through Human Resources such as ASPIRE, Diversity in the Workplace, Feedback Matters, Four Generations, and the class on ethics. I will continue to educate myself to improve my understanding on the needs and desires of what the campus expects from its leadership team to better qualify myself for a career at UNC Charlotte as a leader. I am one who does not give up. I know that my opportunity will come, if not at UNC Charlotte, maybe another State campus. I sincerely hope, however, to become an important part of the leadership here. I am even considering teaching or advising. Thank you for giving me the opportunity to tell you a little about myself. Holiday Party Event Committee
2012 Holiday Party Highlights The December 5th Christmas party had a lot more people attend than in previous years. One reason is because this year’s program was better than the one’s before it. For one, the music was not as loud this time around, so we could communicate with each other.
The door prizes were valuable and their winners were satisfied. Thanks to the sponsors for the donations. Santa Claus really came through this year and I especially enjoyed the professional leadership from Catherine Armstrong (BES) as our third shift committee representative and co-MC as well as the singing and dancing by Allen Gayden (BES). The food and dessert were very good and the Event Committee headed by Beverly Imes (AVCFM) did an excellent job. Next year we may need additional room if more people decide to attend. FACILITIES MANAGEMENT
Introducing | Curtis Gatt Curtis brings with him five years of surveying and CAD experience, three years from high school and two years from college. He was previously a full-time summer intern at TIAA-CREF as a Bank PMO (Bank Program Management Office). Curtis transferred here from Hershey, Pennsylvania where he attended Harrisburg Area Community College. Curtis is a third year student at UNC Charlotte working on his Finance degree. He has plans to pursue a Master’s Degree in either Construction Management or Real Estate. He likes boating, snowboarding, wake boarding, cars, traveling, visiting family and friends, camping, fishing and hiking in the mountains.
Curtis Gatt, FIS Survey Technician
Curtis Gatt is the newest member of the Facilities
Information Systems team. Curtis came onboard in November as our Survey Technician. Curtis is responsible for surveying campus buildings, surveying sites (using GPS equipment), and updating CAD Drawings that are then accurantely reflected within the ARCHIBUS Web Central Systems.
We are excited to have Curtis on our team, and we believe that Curtis’s surveying and CAD skills will be an extremely valuable asset in supporting Facilities Management operations and its continued growth. Please join us in welcoming Curtis to our team. If you would like to stop by to say hello and welcome him to Facilities Management, he is located on the second floor of the Facilities Management/Police Building in Room 228.

| UNC Charlotte Composting
Di ning Servi ces loses the waste UNC Char lotte & Chartwells New Composting Process Dining Services looks to get rich, in composted nutrients, for 2013. UNC Charlotte and Chartwells Dining Services began a new composting collection procedure in December of 2012 and plans to reduce waste going forward. Now all the pulped food will be composted. On the loading dock of the Student Union behind closed doors is a workhorse of a machine. A state-of-the-art food pulper reduces liquid and solid waste — including food scraps and paper products — by up to 85% of its original volume through the use of an advanced water extraction system. This allows all the food scraps and paper waste from the kitchens and dining areas to be processed without special materials while reducing disposal quantities, landfill debris, and material costs. Over 1000+ pounds of pre and post-consumer food waste are processed each week from Student Union dining services areas.
“UNC Charlotte has made a commitment to diverting or recycling as much material as possible.” As of December 2012, the extracted pulped material will be composted by Earth Farms, a local company that has served the Charlotte area for many years. Earth Farms will now partner with UNC Charlotte to turn the previously wasted material into nutrient-rich, soil-enhancing compost. “Composting of food waste not only achieves the University waste minimization goals but also contributes to the campus Climate Action Plan (CAP) goals by avoiding greenhouse gasses associated with disposing this waste in a landfill,” said David Jones, UNC Charlotte Sustainability Coordinator.
14
The cost for Earth Farms to pick up a load of material for composting is the same as landfilling it. By sending the food scraps to Earth Farms, Dining Services was able to cancel a day of trash pick-up. That means less waste for the University and more material to be used for composting. UNC Charlotte has made a commitment to diverting or recycling as much material as possible in order to minimize our environmental footprint. The combined partnership with Chartwells and Earth Farms to compost food scraps is a big step toward creating a more sustainable campus. Overall, this new composting procedure is a great way for the University and Dining Services to give back to the environment. The next steps will be to implement this composting procedure at additional campus facilities as UNC Charlotte works to expand the University footprint while reducing their environmental footprint. FM Workstation Migration |
FACILITIES MANAGEMENT
FM Workstation and Share Drive Transition Progresses Considerable progress has been made preparing for
the upcoming move of all Facilities Management workstations and share drive files to UNC Charlotte’s server location. All files, along with department folders, will reside on this new server, managed by UNC Charlotte ITS (InformationTechnology Systems group). According to ITS, the actual migration (moving files from our old server to the new one) will hopefully begin “in the next several weeks” and will take “several weeks” to complete. It is difficult to know exactly how long the transition will take until we begin the process. We will do our best to keep everyone notified as we learn new information.
What to expect
during the migration process
1. There will be some computer downtime while files are moved to the new server; however, downtime is scheduled outside of normal (8:00 am - 5:00 pm) work hours.
The plan is to migrate our sections in the following order: 1. Facilities Information Systems 2. Design Services 3. Capital Projects 4. Associate Vice Chancellor and Architectural Planning 5. Business Office 6. Recycling 7. Grounds and Motor Fleet 8. Facilities Operations 9. Building Environmental Services We will provide any updates or more information as we get closer to an exact schedule.
After Work Hours
2. The downtime period will last several hours during the night or during the weekend. The time is dependent upon the number files and users to be moved.
3. At least three business days prior to each scheduled migration, the department will receive clear instructions, including how to re-log into their computers. facilities.uncc.edu
We request that everyone please continue cleaning up email and files. This process will reduce unnecessary files moving to the new server. Please note that we will work hard to move all files for each group; however, some links may be broken after files have moved from one server to another. If you have any questions about this process, please feel free to contact any member of the Facilities Information Systems team. Thanks for bearing with us as we try to make this transition as painless as humanly possible!
