FACILITIES MANAGEMENT | From the desk of the Associate Vice Chancellor
Greet i ngs from the Associate Vice Chancellor of Facilities Management Happy New Year ! The new calendar year is off to a great start with lots to keep us busy. First, I want to commend you for your hard work in 2013 to make our campus special. Thank you – you are making a difference! As the new year begins, we find ourselves opening yet another new building – PORTAL (Partnership, Outreach, and Research to Accelerate Learning). We took possession of this unique building at the end of January.

MISSION To provide a quality learning, research, and living environment for the benefit of students, faculty, staff, and the community by planning, building, operating, and maintaining the campus of the University of North Carolina at Charlotte.
VISION A leader in Facilities Management distinguished by safety and excellence A proficient, responsive, and a adaptable ‘Team of teams’ Providing high quality services and facilities in an environmentally sustainable manner
CREATING A CAMPUS OF DISTINCTION
PORTAL Building
Due to the diligent efforts of the Capital Projects team it came in on time and under budget. The facility is designed to bring small businesses to campus to collaborate with faculty and researchers. It also contains a Secure Compartmentalized Information Facility (SCIF) where top secret government research can be performed. BES and FO are in the process of hiring people to staff the facility and buying supplies to keep it operational. I want to thank everyone who worked on the campus wide power outage event during the winter holiday break. This was a truly complicated and difficult undertaking. Many of you worked long hours to make it happen. It went smoothly and was transparent to most of our students, faculty, and staff due to proper planning and good leadership.
Thanks, also, to those involved with the response during the recent snow event. It was a most challenging event, yet the best 2 Facilities Focus | Issue 48 response I have seen in a long time. Website: facilities.uncc.edu
Our work on the Association of Higher Education Officials (APPA) Selfassessment and Award of Excellence program is moving smoothly. We submitted the award application at the end of January. We can expect a site visit from the APPA Review Team sometime in March or April. They will interview employees, customers, and senior administrators to assess our organization and determine if we are deserving of the Award for Excellence. Be ready to put your best foot forward when they arrive! The Self-assessment and Award for Excellence application are an extension of the pursuit of our Vision – to become “A Leader in Facilities Management” and to “Create a Campus of Distinction.” Everything we do is an effort to make us better at our jobs, which are serving the campus community and making UNC Charlotte a special place to live, work, and learn. To accomplish this, our three key business drivers of customer service, continuous improvement, and teamwork need to maintain our priority. Thanks for the fine job you do daily. We are half way through fiscal year 2014. I know with your diligent service to the University, the best is yet to come!

FACILITIES MANAGEMENT | Message from the Chancellor
Greetings from Chancellor Philip L. Dubois Dear Colleagues, I hope you have returned from our winter break ready to take on the new challenges of 2014. We can look forward to another year of dramatic change at UNC Charlotte and I know we can count on you as we move our university forward, bigger and--more importantly--better than ever.
Phil Dubois
But before we get too far into 2014, I want to take this opportunity to thank you for your hard work in 2013. It was quite an eventful year, including our largest ever enrollment; a variety of new buildings completed and in progress; a number of recognitions received by our faculty, staff, and students; and the emergence of 49er football and the completion of a successful inaugural season. Your dedicated efforts--day in and day out--have made a tremendous positive difference in the impression we were able to make with our students and their families, with thousands of 49er sports fans, and with guests from the local community and around the world. As we gear up for another action-packed year, please know how much you are appreciated. We couldn’t do what we do without you! Cordially,
Philip L. Dubois Chancellor
AVC’s Manage by Walking Around Phil is coming to hear from YOU! ►► Monthly informal visits to various sections in their work spaces ►► Hear directly from employees in small groups ►► Learn firsthand about successes, challenges, ideas for change and issues ►► Take ideas and problems back to leadership for implementation or resolution With a staff of over 400 people, it is challenging to talk with everyone during the year even at our fellowship events. Hence, the AVC’s Manage by Walking Around. It is my goal to have face to face contact with you to hear what’s going on in your areas.

FACILITIES MANAGEMENT | Employee of the Quarter
Employee of the Quarter: Benny Reese (Facilities Information Systems) Nominated By Fred Brillante, Director, Facilities Information Systems
C
ongratulations go out to Benny Reese, Business Applications Analyst,
for being awarded “Employee of the Quarter.” The nomination was for Benny’s extensive work in integrating SDI’s Punch-In system with ARCHIBUS. Benny’s initiative and commitment enabled him to facilitate the completion of the project, which ultimately saved approximately $20,000 because Facilities Management did not have to outsource this work. Those funds were then available to be allocated elsewhere to the much needed capital projects enhancements. Prior to his work, users were going into ARCHIBUS on a daily basis to fix parts errors. Because of his holistic approach to development, he elected to rewrite much of the antiquated module used to transfer data between Archibus and SDI. He even put in monitoring to notify FIS if there is a failure. The result has been an improved and faster system with fewer errors. Benny started work in February 2013. His primary job responsibilities are Phil Jones presents EOQ Award to Benny Reese
ARCHIBUS development and maintenance. He knew very little about ARCHIBUS when he started in this position and has become so skilled now that the vendor calls to ask him questions. His hard work, technical skill, and motivation make him a great asset to the University. Benny is married and has a two year old daughter. He is a huge gamer, playing all types of games. When asked about his job in Facilities Information Systems Benny responded, “I really enjoy my job, FM has

Mario Moore! Candis Robinson, Supervisor of Building Environmental Services (BES), Library Zone, was dispatched by Campus Police for assistance at Moore Hall at 1:20 a.m. A large flood issue occurred on the ninth floor, requiring the use of a wet vac. Ms. Robinson informed dispatch that the Residence Halls

were outside the jurisdiction covered by her zone. The need was great and immediate attention was needed as expressed by the resident assistant; therefore, Ms. Robinson sent team member, Sintanis Joline, who drove over with a truck. With the assistance of Mario Moore, they were able to transport two wet vacs to help clear out the flood. After approximately 1 ½ hours, the duo was able to extract the water from the main areas near steps, elevators, bathrooms, as well as student rooms. Overall, the entire process went smoothly. Although they were soaked from the work performed, the job was successfully completed by FM BEST II’s. The team’s overall goal and part of Building Environmental Service’s mission is to provide a safe and healthy campus, which was shown at the completion of the work performed. The duo was encouraged to assist as part of a team focus to help Campus Police and maintain safety for students and faculty who live and work on campus.

Our Construction and Demolition (C&D) program began in 2004 as part of a way to further reduce waste on campus, comply with state regulations, and in some cases save money on tipping fees or receive a slight monetary return on materials. I mean, who throws away metal right? The compound is a centralized staging area for many of our recyclable materials which get picked up on a weekly and sometimes daily basis that includes steel and aluminum, end of life construction materials, propane canisters and the like. We also collect higher quality metals such as copper which can be sold for market value. In addition to the metal bins, we also have one for tree clippings and yard waste, which is particularly robust in the springtime. Yard waste clippings are hauled to Wallace Farms in Huntersville to be transformed into mulch, which will then be sold to the general public for domestic use. The C&D bins are collection points for broken furniture, wood waste, concrete etc., which are transported to a C&D landfill in Harrisburg on Highway 49. Pallets are collected in a containment area and recycled on a call-in basis. If you handle any of these materials as part of your daily routine, please help us by sorting them into the correct bin. For more information on the C&D recycling program, or if you have any questions about separation, please contact Shannon CavenyCox at 7-0605.

B
uilding Environmental Services (BES) and Recycling cares for UNC Charlotte’s built environment to provide a safe and healthy campus. We achieve this by routinely cleaning, recycling, and conserving university resources. Over the last year, BES&R has been focused on continuous improvement. Two deliverables to achieve this goal are: conducting a Zone Study and creating Liaison Cards to improve customer service and communication. We will deliver a final recommendation of the newly proposed schedules and geography for the BES Zones by March 2014 and give a future update in the next issue of Facilities Focus. Stay tuned!

To help grow this event week, we need suggestions for events that will attract students, faculty, and staff. This is a good opportunity to educate the campus on issues important to Facilities Management, such as maintaining a clean and safe campus, efficient use of energy, water, and materials, and helping members of the campus gain the same benefits at home and in our communities. If you have a suggestion or want to remind us of a good event from the past that we should bring back, please contact Mike Lizotte, University Sustainability Officer at mlizotte@uncc.edu.
