Meet a Tar Heel “Carolina has continuously enhanced my learning in and outside the classroom by presenting me with real world applications. Working in a neurobiology lab has given me hands-on experience in cutting-edge research, such as understanding the mechanisms behind Alzheimer’s disease.” – Tavian Mapp UNC ‘18
“I love how my UNC professors are so much more than just professors. Their energy and willingness to help are enough to make each class feel small and personal. They have years of experience in their fields, and some still have active careers in addition to teaching, so you know everything you're being taught is current.” – Anna Stone UNC ‘18
“When I was in the process of choosing a college, I knew I wanted a large and diverse student population, strong academics, and an engaging athletic program. When I joined Carolina and became a part of this network of students, faculty, and staff challenging and supporting one another, I came to love this school more than I could have ever dreamed.” – Teresa Ceballos UNC ‘17

Meet our alumni “After graduating from Carolina, I’ve interned at the White House, completed my law degree, and now, I’m a corporate lawyer at an international law firm. My experiences at Carolina – from the wide-ranging curriculum to the engaging and supportive professors to the diverse community – have equipped me with the research, critical thinking and writing skills that I use every day. Beyond that, I created a community of people, many of whom I still keep in touch with today. I even met my fiancée at Carolina!” Timothy Hughes UNC '11 (BA), Duke '14 (JD)

What kind of students are we seeking
Want to join UNC '22? As a strong student poised for an exciting future, you should expect to join a community of students who share your dream of a better world. We’re also committed to a better world, and that’s why every year we seek to build an entering class whose collective strengths will help us in our work. The qualities that describe our students are too numerous to list here, but it’s fair to say that our strongest applicants are smart, talented, engaged, and kind. They also bring fresh ideas and diverse perspectives. Our students learn and grow together, celebrate each other’s differences, and inspire one another to do great things. So if you’re ready to make the future you imagine come true, apply to Carolina, and let’s do it together.

2. The application Beginning an application is the first step to joining the Carolina community. In addition to your demographic information, we’ll ask you to tell us about the topics below so that we can get to know you better: Your class schedule: Tell us how you’re spending your senior year of high school and what classes you’re taking. Extracurricular activities: Tell us what you do outside of the classroom – including school clubs, athletics, religious or community participation, work experience, or family responsibilities – and why you do it. One essay + Two short answers: Choose which prompts are meaningful to you. We want to hear your voice and understand what’s important to you. For more information, please visit admissions.unc.edu/apply.
Residency If you are a North Carolina resident and would like to qualify for the in-state tuition benefit, please submit a residency application with the North Carolina Residency Determination Services (RDS). Then you'll be assigned a Residency Certification Number (RCN), which you will be asked to provide in your application for admission.

Next steps 3. Required documents • Secondary school statement. Your school counselor will submit this statement on your behalf, which helps us understand your high school and the curriculum available to you. Your counselor also has the option of submitting a recommendation, but this is not required. • SAT or ACT scores. First-year applicants must submit either the SAT or ACT. We can consider scores for tests taken through November for Early Action, and through December for Regular Decision. Scores should be sent directly to us from the testing service. Our SAT code is 5816 and our ACT code is 3162. • Letter of recommendation. We ask that you submit one letter of recommendation from a teacher who taught you in one of the core academic areas. When you are deciding who will submit a letter on your behalf, choose someone who knows you well and can describe your academic potential and unique personal qualities.
Optional: Excel@Carolina Shortly after we notify students of their admission decision, we offer about ten percent of our admitted students one of these special opportunities, which range from Honors Carolina to assured admission in business and journalism. If you would like to be considered for any of these Excel@Carolina opportunities, you will have the option to indicate your interest in your application. Please note that certain programs are only available to candidates admitted through Early Action. Please also note that your interest in any of these opportunities will not affect your admission to the University in any way.
