ACADEMICS
Your journey begins in the College of Arts and Sciences, where you’ll build a foundation of knowledge and critical thinking skills during your first two years. This experience will prepare you for your next step — choosing a major or applying to one of our professional schools. Throughout your four years here, you’ll learn from world-class faculty that includes an Emmy Award-winning filmmaker, a National Medal of Technology and Innovation recipient, and a Nobel Prize Laureate. You’ll also have opportunities to collaborate with your professors on nationally-funded research and projects outside the classroom.
Learn from the best
“My favorite class was Political Science 490 — agenda formation in presidential trade-craft — with Professor Terry Sullivan. He’s not only deeply knowledgeable about the issues at hand, but he’s frank and engaging, and our thought-provoking conversations allowed me to continue grappling with the topics discussed outside of class — and that’s a pretty good measurement of when you’ve found the best class.” — Javier Zurita, UNC ‘18

RESEARCH & INTERNSHIPS Whether connected through your professors or other campus resources, you’ll have numerous ways to extend your learning outside the classroom. Some examples include studying gene mutations at UNC’s Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center, tracing the roots of a hip-hop group made famous on the internet, and interning for a costume designer of a Broadway production. “During my undergraduate career, my education major has exposed me to multiple internships, including visits to daycares and schools. Within my first semester in the major, I’ve already had many opportunities to mingle with distinguished faculty and find jobs outside of campus.” — Renee Coleman, UNC ‘17 Winston-Salem, NC
Jennifer’s story. What’s yours? Jennifer has enjoyed time to pursue her passions in both the sciences and arts, while serving on the Honor Court, mentoring study abroad students, and getting involved with the Out-of-State Students Association — all with the peace of mind of knowing she has already been admitted to the top pharmacy school in the nation. “At UNC, you’ll not only receive a world-class education, you’ll also have the chance to broaden your horizons and open your mind. For me, studying abroad and being constantly surrounded by people who have led a far different life from my own have helped me grow beyond measure. And that has been the most rewarding of all.”

Aaron’s story. What’s yours? First-generation college student Aaron Epps’ success can’t be measured simply by the completion of degree requirements or his GPA. Aaron is an Honors student, studied abroad in Singapore, Malaysia, and Japan and is a co-chair of the Black Student Movement, among several other leadership and extracurricular involvements. Despite how passionate he is about his activities and classes, Aaron credits his love for UNC to being immersed in an empathetic, supportive student body. “I knew UNC students cared and were passionate to see one another succeed, and I wanted to be a part of that.”
— Aaron Epps, UNC ‘18 Fairmont, NC
STUDY ABROAD Want to enhance your education with a global experience? Whether you want to research a specific culture or issue, intern with an international organization, or just polish your language skills, at UNC you’ll have your choice of 300+ study abroad programs in over 70 countries. “I chose to study abroad in Florence, Italy for my studio art minor, and the experience was more challenging and far more rewarding than I could have imagined. Enjoying the sunset at Piazzale Michelangelo, the satisfaction of putting the final touches on my oil painting in the studio, and getting my ‘last’ gelato with UNC friends are some of my favorite memories. But I also appreciate the moments that pushed me and taught me lessons I couldn’t have fully learned otherwise.” — Jennifer Morrison, UNC ‘17 Brookeville, MD

JOURNALISM
“I always loved student government, and especially here at Carolina where it’s so impactful to so many students, and also you can have an impact on the community. I’d like to go into politics one day, and student government is a great place to learn about new people and network and to have a hand in all kinds of clubs across campus.” — Tarik Woods, Salisbury, NC
“I went to Rio to cover the biggest sporting event in the world. I can't believe the university I dreamed of attending — which happens to be a 6-time Hearst champion, by the way — actually sent me to cover the Olympics. The handson experience, the connections, the memories — I'm incredibly thankful for this opportunity." — Brett Thompson, UNC ‘17 Lincolnton, NC

Chelsea’s story. What’s yours? CIelsea is a “double Tar Heel,” which means she completed her undergraduate degree at UNC and returned to Chapel Hill for her law degree. Having grown up in a small town near her Lumbee tribal community, she was nervous about the transition to Carolina. But in coming to UNC, she found a home within Native American interest groups on campus, even taking on leadership positions within them, and found the support and confidence she needed to apply to law school. “Though I worked hard to earn these opportunities, I wouldn’t have gotten there without the support system I established within the Native community at Carolina.” — Chelsea Barnes, UNC ‘15 Hope Mills, NC
After four years, you’ll be ready to make your mark on the world at leading nonprofits or Fortune 500 companies. Or at graduate or professional programs in fields such as medicine, law, chemistry, business, and political science at institutions such as Oxford, Harvard, Princeton, Yale and UNC.
Andrea’s story. What’s yours? Taking a 35-minute bus ride from her home in Prince George’s County, Maryland to her high school each day, Andrea wasn’t sure where her dream school was, but was committed to going whatever distance was needed to find the best quality education. With financial help from UNC, Andrea is able to work toward pursuing her career in educational policy, including receiving a grant to fund her summer internship in which she worked to better connect families to educational resources in her hometown county in Maryland. As the director of the Latina/o Mentoring Program, Andrea is now giving students the guidance she once sought herself in navigating what used to be a seemingly distant world of higher education. “It took meeting others, getting involved on campus, gaining more mentors, and engaging with my campus to see that UNC was #1 out of the 27 universities I originally applied to.” — Andrea Barnes, UNC ‘18
