Getting Started

An employer spends (on average) 10–20 seconds examining a resume. Therefore, you should design your resume so that it is attractive and easy to read. Keep it concise. Read job descriptions to identify the skills, experience and/or knowledge required. Make your resume show the employer how you qualify for the position. Remember, your goal is to advance to the next step in the job search process, which is usually the interview! This guide has examples from a number of candidates, including one from each school at UNCG. Use them as samples for formatting ideas, headings, ways of organizing the information, etc. Take time to make your resume strategic and have multiple versions of your resume to meet different kinds of jobs. Check out this overview on getting started with your resume. The Career Team is here to assist you in making your resume the best it can be. Objectives and Profiles Think of this as an introduction to the resume (and to you). Many people choose to start off their resumes with a statement that can position them toward a certain career direction. The objective and profile are effective ways of doing this. •• •• •• ••

Place the objective or profile just below the contact information. Indicate skills sets you can offer, potential outcomes if they hire you, and focus on employer needs. Use keywords that appear in job postings & identify your strengths (what makes you stand out from others). The whole document answers the question: “why should we hire you?” so be sure to utilize the space strategically.

Objectives are short, concise statements that convey why you are writing the resume. They demonstrate a focus regarding the particular position or industry you are seeking. Objective statements should articulate your major qualifications and focus on potential outcomes. Example Objectives: 1. Seeking the Human Resources Specialist position at General Motors, Inc. utilizing assessment skills, employee training experience, and a business background. 2. To obtain a part-time position, utilizing superior customer service skills to increase company sales and provide a positive experience for all patrons 3. Seeking a Research Consulting internship at a strong research firm where proven decision-making and management skills will be utilized for improving organizational productivity Profiles are similar but usually go more in-depth with qualifications and skills. Profiles are utilized for many reasons but particularly when a job seeker needs to spell out the reasons he/she is applying for a certain job. If the experiences on the resume don’t directly match, a profile can help solidify why you are applying. Example Profiles: 1. Athlete with strong time management ability Proven experiences in reaching sales goals and self-motivated to succeed Excellent customer service orientation and ability to work in team environment 2. Motivated accounting student seeking part-time position to complement experiences Possesses effective organizational and communication skills Detail-oriented and driven with strong academic background 2

Action Verbs When writing an effective resume, use action verbs to describe experiences. Articulate your experiences using a bullet point format (rather than paragraphs) to be concise for the reader. Lead with an action verb. Below is a selection to get you started. This list is not comprehensive; brainstorm with a career team member for the correct words that fit your experiences. Management Skills administered, assigned, chaired, coordinated, contracted, controlled, delegated, developed, directed, evaluated, managed, organized, oversaw, planned, prioritized, spearheaded, supervised Communication Skills clarified, collaborated, communicated, convinced, corresponded, directed, edited, encouraged, influenced, mediated, negotiated, promoted, produced, publicized, recruited, represented Research Skills assessed, analyzed, classified, documented, examined, identified, inspected, observed, reviewed Technical Skills calculated, computed, constructed, designed, fabricated, gathered, input, maintained, modified, operated, overhauled, programmed, upgraded Teaching Skills adapted, addressed, advised, clarified, coached, communicated, coordinated, enabled, guided, instructed, stimulated, strengthened, trained

Financial Skills allocated, appraised, audited, balanced, budgeted, compiled, forecasted, marked, projected, surveyed Creative Skills authored, conceptualized, created, customized, designed, directed, established, founded, initiated, integrated, introduced, invented, originated, performed, pioneered, researched, started Helping Skills advised, assisted, counseled, demonstrated, diagnosed, familarized, educated, expedited, facilitated, inspired, motivated, rehabilitated, stimulated, supported Clerical or Detail Skills arranged, assembled, catalogued, implemented, monitored, purchased, reviewed, referred, scheduled, systematized, tabulated, validated Accomplishments accomplished, achieved, attained, expanded, improved, increased, recommended (solutions), resolved (problems), restored, transformed

Section Heading Examples Breaking your resume up into easy-to-read sections helps the employer quickly see your qualifications. Below are some suggestions to get you started. • ACADEMIC PROJECTS • ACCOMPLISHMENTS • ACTIVITIES/ATHLETICS • AWARDS/HONORS • CERTIFICATIONS • COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT • EDUCATION • INTERNATIONAL EXPERIENCES • INTERNSHIP EXPERIENCE/STUDY ABROAD • LEADERSHIP

• MEMBERSHIPS & AFFILIATIONS • OTHER EXPERIENCE • PRESENTATIONS • PUBLICATIONS • RELATED WORK EXPERIENCE • RELEVANT COURSEWORK • RESEARCH • SKILLS • VOLUNTEER SERVICE • WORK EXPERIENCE

Consider including specialized sections such as “Marketing Internship” instead of simply Internships or “Community Outreach” as opposed to simply Volunteering. The choices should reflect what will be most applicable to the employers who will read it.

• This is an example of a functional resume which focuses more on transferrable skill sets rather than specific employment. It categorizes relevant skills and achievements in typical bullet format. The work experience is still listed at the bottom but the emphasis is on skills more than job titles. This works well for people who are transitioning to a new field of work or who have gaps in their work history. To learn more about the Functional Resume, check out this video from HowCast • Also notice the education section is at the bottom—this is because the skills and experiences are more relevant to this person’s objective and the education is simply another qualification. 6

This resume has two addresses. Some people choose to do this if they have ties to a geographic location they want to work in. For example if you are at UNCG currently but plan to work in your home town, list both addresses. It is common in today’s marketplace to search online for prospective employees. This resume included a LinkedIn profile URL so that the employer can find her easily. Talk to a career team member about LinkedIn today! Check out this video from for best practices on submitting your resume online.

When submitting a resume online: • Create a PDF out of your resume to ensure the formatting and spacing stays the way you created it. • Give your resume a file name that is descriptive. For example JohnSmith_Resume. Don’t use Resume2 or UpdatedResume. • Include the resume as an attachment along with a targeted cover letter. Some people choose to use the body of their email as a cover letter. This alternative is also acceptable. Either method should refer to the resume that is attached.
