Mission

The Spartan Club secures the financial support that provides our student-athletes with the opportunities to achieve academic and athletic success.

A message from the

Athletic Director

Fellow Spartans, On behalf of UNCG and our 17 varsity teams, I want to thank you for supporting UNCG Athletics. Over the past year, we have excelled on and off the field and live each day representing the Spartan Way.

2013-14 was another successful year for the Spartan Club. We set new records in the athletic scholarship fund with $375,978 contributed from 887 donors, and also launched the first-ever True Spartan Challenge, a student-athlete giving campaign. After just six weeks, 100% of our student-athletes contributed to the program. These student-athletes made a bold statement about their dedication to UNCG Athletics, and we hope you will partner with them by supporting the Spartan Club in 2014-15. Your commitment allows our student-athletes to continue to achieve at the highest levels in competition, in the classroom and in the community. There are many ways to follow our success including uncgspartans.com or, even better, by joining us in person to cheer us on at home or on the road. Go Spartans!

As you can see from the previous page, thanks to the generosity of the alumni, friends and family of UNCG Athletics, our Athletic Scholarship Fund has grown significantly over the past few years. In fact, since 2010-11, it has grown by nearly 50%. However, due to continuing rise of the cost of tuition, we are still about $500,000 short from being able to fully fund all of our teams to the NCAA maximum allowed scholarship limits. Since 2010, our scholarship expense has increased by more than $1 million. We must continue to grow our Athletic Scholarship Fund to compete at the highest levels within the Southern Conference and beyond. Endowments also provide an opportunity to build long-term stability and growth in our athletic scholarship funding. While named endowments begin at $50,000, it will take leadership gifts well beyond that to fully fund scholarships (see chart below) based on the University’s annual spending policy amount of 4.25%. Principal Partner, Trinity Financial Wayne, Pa. “Having had the privilege of being a studentathlete at UNCG instilled in me hard-work, time management, resilience, teamwork and dedication that I carry with me every day in my role now as a professional, business owner and as a mother. I feel an obligation to give back to support current and future Spartans just as others provided that funding and support to us. It is a wonderful cycle of excellence.”

2001

“Being a studentathlete at UNCG has provided me with an experience I never could have imagined. The entire department has been supportive since my freshman year of getting me acclimated to college to helping me develop the leadership skills that I use every day. UNCG was the right fit for me from the second I walked onto campus. Being a Spartan is something that I take pride in and always will.”

“My experience as a student-athlete at UNCG propelled me to strive for excellence and helped prepare me for my current role as a principal. The sense of family and unity I experienced as an athlete makes me want to give back so another student-athlete has the same opportunities given to me. Every student that has the privilege of being an athlete here should consider it an honor to wear the BLUE and GOLD!”

1989

“One important aspect of sports for every athlete is the passion we have for our team and the sport itself. It is the reason we run every sprint, lift every weight and get back up every time we are knocked down. Passion keeps me dedicated and working hard. Since becoming a Spartan, I have discovered an even deeper passion for basketball and it is what drives me to be better on the court, in the classroom and in my everyday life.”

Angie Polk-Jones, ‘89

2013-14

Academic Success • Department cumulative GPA of 3.06. • Eight teams achieved a 3.0 GPA or better for the year.

• 38 student-athletes were awarded special distinctions of Cum Laude, Magna Cum Laude or Summa Cum Laude in Spring 2014.

2016 Noah DeAngelo, ‘16 Biology Burlington, N.C.

ESPN Soccer Analyst Avon, Conn. “UNCG is a special place and I have a great appreciation for this program. UNCG always will be a place I am proud to call home. Being a student-athlete prepared me for my future with ESPN and enhanced my knowledge of the game of soccer. However, UNCG has potential for continuous growth and development, and this will become a reality as long as the extended UNCG family truly believes in this program.”

2001

“UNCG is a place where ambition meets opportunity. My experiences at UNCG and the relationships I have forged have molded my character, affirmed my values and have directed my future ambitions. It is with great pride that I am able to now, and in the future, call myself a Spartan.”

ENDOWMENTS

Eira Jensen, ‘17

Holmveien, Norway Major: Psychology

Endowments allow donors to set up a fund for student-athlete scholarships or team operation funds that can be counted on each year by a student-athlete or coach. The donor has discretion over the naming of the endowment and designating the funds to a particular sport. Endowments are available beginning at $50,000, but larger endowments are needed to fully endow the scholarship needs of our program. Endowment gifts also qualify for priority points.

Spartan Club Priority Point System The Spartan Club Priority Point System is designed to reward those who have been loyal and generous to UNCG Athletics through the years and create a fair and equitable means of allocating benefits that exist in limited quantities related to the men’s and women’s basketball programs. The Spartan Club will assign benefits among donors and season ticket holders using the chart below to calculate point totals. For more information on the point system, visit SpartanClub.org.

True Spartan Challenge UNCG student-athletes accomplished a new feat in 2013-14 as 100 percent of all current student-athletes made a gift to their team’s enrichment fund in the first-ever True Spartan Challenge. UNCG is among a small number of schools across the country that reached this accomplishment in the first year. Spartan student-athletes made a bold statement about their dedication to UNCG Athletics. The True Spartan Challenge student-athlete giving campaign was developed as a partnership between the Spartan Club and the Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC). Through the True Spartan Challenge, student-athletes also competed to be the first men’s and women’s team to 100% participation (men’s soccer and women’s tennis), as well as have the highest average Jade Scaife gift per player on each team (women’s golf Class of 2017 and men’s tennis).

The relationships built, lessons and experiences while a Spartan have helped to shape everything I do. Staying active in supporting the next generation of Spartan student-athletes is an important step in building a community of winners and growing the Spartan Family.”
